Queensland were well placed for victory at stumps on the third day against South Australia at the Gabba, where the Redbacks were 4 for 181 and still needed a further 68 runs to make the Bulls bat again. Tom Cooper was at the crease on 30 and Alex Ross had 23, and Mark Cosgrove had earlier scored 65 before he was caught off fast bowler Billy Stanlake.

Queensland's veterans James Hopes and Chris Hartley had again played key roles on the third day, Hopes first scoring a half-century and then claiming 2 for 24 from 16 overs to cause problems for the South Australia batsmen. Hartley, meanwhile, made 46 and then pocketed three catches to draw level with Wade Seccombe on 519 to share the record for first-class dismissals for Queensland.

Queensland started the day at 5 for 316 and added 136 for the loss of their final five wickets as Hopes (57), Hartley and the tail made contributions.
