Shakib Al Hasan in line for T20I captaincy

Shakib Al Hasan is the strongest candidate to replace Mashrafe Mortaza as Bangladesh's T20I captain, according to BCB president Nazmul Hassan, who said he wanted different captains for each format.

The BCB had split the international captaincy in 2014, when Mushfiqur Rahim was stripped off the ODI and T20I leadership. Mashrafe became captain in the limited-overs formats and transformed Bangladesh into a competitive unit in two years. But now that Mashrafe has announced his retirement from T20Is, Hassan swiftly named his choice as successor, though Shakib has to be endorsed by the board of directors.

"Shakib is the most likely candidate to take the T20 captaincy," Hassan said. "We always had five candidates. Since Mashrafe and Mushfiqur are already captains, we only had Tamim, Mahmudullah and Shakib as the remaining ones. Shakib's mental attitude and performance shows that he has matured, and is a full grown-up. He is ahead of the other candidates."

Hassan said Mashrafe will remain ODI captain. "There's no chance of changing the ODI captaincy. One year ago we thought the Champions Trophy will be his last tournament, but now it seems he can play more.

"He will play as long as he is fit. There's no chance for him to be out of the squad. It is a different issue if the captain or coach thinks someone can play in his place."

Hassan also revealed a conversation he had with Tamim Iqbal, Shakib, Mushfiqur and Mashrafe in Colombo on Monday. He said he gave them a guarantee of a long-term place in the Bangladesh team, unless disciplinary issues arose. ESPNcricinfo learned the players understood that it was a confidential conversation, but Hassan divulged many of the contents of the meeting.

"On the eve of the first T20, I spoke to Tamim, Shakib, Mushfiqur and Mashrafe. I told them that nobody can drop you given how much you've contributed to the team. At least until I am around. You have to make your own exit plan. If you play badly for a game or two, or even for a year, you won't be dropped. Except disciplinary issues, you won't be dropped for performance.

"Who would drop Shakib? Tamim has been one of our best batsmen. Mushfiqur is our batting pillar. He is like our Rahul Dravid. Who would drop them? No question about it. Mashrafe is beyond performance. He doesn't have to bat or bowl well. He has a lot of something different. It is hard to find another Mashrafe. His leadership quality, and his love for team and the country is a rare quality. I am not saying others don't have it but his is of a different level."

I'm not sure if to make Shakib captain would be a good choice. He is the most immature player in the BD team imo even after all these years of experience. Maybe mahmudullah is a better choice for t20.

In T20 Mahmudulla is a better captain. You need to see his captaincy in BPL last year to judge. I was the 1st one asking to drop him from test team. But I know his batting style suits shorter format. He even bowls better in T20. I think He should be picked for captain.

@CRICFAN87266267, Not sure if you are from Sri Lanka or Afghanistan but would like to ask you if there has been sunrise in your respective country this morning? If so, how calm you're still in deep sleep at the end of the day when Bangladesh literally thrashed Sri Lanka by 45 runs and you're suggesting test status for Afghanistan, have you even seen the entire result of this series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka? Welcome to reality!

They have to have courage to drop someone for bad performance. Just look how Test team performed after the Mahmudulla's dropping. For the sake of the team any non-performing player should be dropped.

"If you play badly for a game or two, or even for a year, you won't be dropped." - horrible! Horribly misguided! That's not how you build players up! Nazmul has a big mouth! Should stop talking so much, spe to the media

I am not sure i agree with the philosophy and wisdom behind having a spot regardless of performance. If anything, all the senior players should be pushed at all times for their spot so they don't get too comfortable. This could hamper us in the long run. It is one thing to assure them at a personal level but to make this public is poor judgment!

What happens if mushfiqe doesn't perform at all in next 2 years In odis and T20s after this statement? What happens if we continue to lose all the matches from here on? Will Mr. Papoon take responsibility and play himself?

Sakib became captain when he was 22, still bd whitewashed nz (4-0) , beat Zim and WI , Eng under his captaincy. Bd needs aggressive guys in all sectors of life, timid people never earn respect. Talking about punishment , if virat kholi played for Bangladesh he would be banned for lifetime because our officials wants servants. Some Bd fan want saints in cricket field. Don't forget that mash looked great as captain largely because of musfiq's poor captaincy, in 2012-2014 when bd lost almost every matches under musfq. It is because of musfiq bd lost so many closed games in all formats . Sakib should be the captain for all format. Tamim's on field captaincy is as poor as musfiq we saw that in last NZ tour. Mamudulla is not a consistent performer, his place in BD team is highly questionable.

Please people should stop asking for Tamim to be a T20 captain. He doesn't deserve to be in the team just like mushfiqe, Taskin and mashrafi. If mash retires before the 2019WC mahamudullah should be odi captain.I like this decision to give T20 captaincy to sakib.

Shakib has done well after few punishment he received. Putting him as captain again will take away his focus and hardwork to be in the team. Its a bad step at the peak time for BNG cricket. tamim should be the captain
