Ashraful chopped from central contracts list

Mohammad Ashraful has not been awarded a contract by the Bangladesh Cricket Board for 2012. The BCB announced contracts for 15 players after the meeting of its board of directors on Sunday, with a salary hike of 10% from last year.

The contracts were divided into five categories, with A+ being the highest grade. Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Abdur Razzak and Mashrafe Mortaza retained their A+ grading from last year. Imrul Kayes, with a grade A contract, and Shafiul Islam, with a grade B contract, received upgrades.

Ashraful missed out after a woeful 2011, in which he was in and out of both the Test and one-day teams. He had averaged just 5.28 in seven one-dayers, and 28.25 in two Tests. He was not a part of the squad that impressed in the recently concluded Asia Cup.

Nasir Hossain, who has averaged 42 for Bangladesh in 14 ODIs with a hundred and three half-centuries, was included for the first time in the list with a grade C contract. Batsmen Nazimuddin and Shuvagata Hom, and left-arm spinner Elias Sunny who claimed a six-for on debut against West Indies in October, were awarded rookie grade contracts.

Shahadat Hossain, Junaid Siddique, Syed Rasel, Raqibul Hasan, Naeem Islam and Suhrawadi Shuvo missed out on contracts this year.

That's what should happen to everyone who do not perform well for more than 6 months regardless of how "good" the player is. Having potential and experience means nothing if a cricketer cannot perform.

Shafiul Islam and Rubel Hossain should have been also kicked out from the team with Shahadat Hossain and Mohammad Ashraful.

Good to see BCB take some inisiative to take BAN cricket in next stage selecting new team? Is this selection is just punishing some cricketers or betterment for BAN cricket? Do they have any other plan, like promoting more strike player like musfiq,..on top(schin-shebag,..)? or newcomer would be ok? Dont BAN cricket still have any place for reliable cricketer like shahriar Nafees in the middle order? best luck BAN cricket!!.

Where is Shahriar Nafees? Why there is Nazimuddin?

At last Ash and Shahadat is out,BD wud have been the Asia Cup champion if it wasnt for shahadat, inclusion of Imrul is needed as we need a reliable batsman to support Tamim(like world cup),Shahriar Nafees needs to be in the team to support the openers as BD loses first 3 wickets quickly and struggles in that area, surprised to see Anamul wasnt included, find no reason to include Jahirul as he doesnt bat according to the grammar, which is good for T20 but not for ODI or test.Shubhagoto has talent according to the league performances, not sure about international formats, but no harm to try.Nazimuddin should be kicked out as I dont see any place for him in the team.We dont need Razzaq as he doesnt make any significant differences against powerful teams, he can only do good with Zimbabwe, same goes for Naim islam.Besides we have Shakib , Sunny and Riad for spin, no need to have any more spinners.

Why in the heaven's name Shuvagata Hom has been included in the central contract!? I see no reason for Shahadat Hossain, Shahriar Nafees and Junaid Siddique to be kept out of the contract, as they are still must in longer version of the game. Nazimuddin's performance in recently concluded Asia Cup hardly justify his place, but it is also unfair to judge someone with performance in a particular series.

  • on April 3, 2012, 17:47 GMT

Why Nasir in Grade C? He should be A+.... Naim, Shuvo and Raqib should be included.

  • Jawwad123 on April 3, 2012, 14:16 GMT

It would have been wiser to include Ashraful after the way we saw Nazim bat in the A.Cup. To all the critics I would say that Ash has truly not been given a proper chance after his demotion from captaincy which has put pressure in him and prevented him from performing. His class was evident in the BPL where he had no pressure. So please think hard again. Nafees, Junaid and Naeem should have been given chances. Nazim should have been beheaded!! It was wise to let Anamul mature in the leagues before making his debut. Mahmud shouldn't be given a regular spot.

I would pick Nazmul over Rubel and Shafiul any day.

  • tigers_eye on April 2, 2012, 20:04 GMT

Why only 15 players contracted? How many players does a test nation have contracted through their board?

15 players may not even makeup the national teams in all three format. Who are we kidding BCB?

  • drnaveed on April 2, 2012, 18:19 GMT

well this list was made by BCB ,or their current boss BCCI ???????????

  • k4zz on April 2, 2012, 18:03 GMT

Still a few more changes should have been made, firstly getting rid of Ash and especially Shahadat is a good start. Shahadat should not play any form of International cricket for a prolonged period of time, because he has always been a poor bowler, going wicketless and giving easy runs throughout his career. Ash needs to continue to improve and hopefully this will be a kick up the backside for him to reclaim a place back in the fold. Some changes I would do is that Shahriar Nafees should defiately have been given a contract especially for Tests, would also have liked to seen Naeem Islam given a contract and be given an extended run in Test cricket higher up the order as he has the temperant to bat long periods but hasn't been given the chance. Imrul Kayes should be dropped from the contract or atleast given only a Grade C. Would like to see B'desh give some chances to the young prospects of Asif Ahmed, Anamul Haque, Al-Amin.

  • gmukhtadir on April 2, 2012, 14:01 GMT

A last a wonderful and great decision. Thanks BCB.

  • muatasim_bd on April 2, 2012, 12:32 GMT

I am very happy that there is no contract awarded to Shahadat and Ashraful but what makes me angry is that Shafiul and Rubel getting Grade B and BCB should have got rid of them because they are same like Shahadat and Ashraful and they always keep repeating the same mistakes and they never learn from it and nor do they even think of improving and on the other hand BCB did a real blunder by getting rid of Raqibul, Shubho, Enamul Haque Jnr, Naeem Islam and Syed Rasel. These 5 players are 100 times better than Shafiul and Rubel. If I ever worked in BCB, besides Ashraful and Shahadat I would also get rid of Shafiul and Rubel and bring back Raqibul, Shubho, Enamul, Naeem and Rasel.

  • Noball_Specialist on April 2, 2012, 11:26 GMT

Ashraful has enjoyed a very generous run and has wasted his talent away with a lack of application. It is a wise decision and better for Ashraful if he moved on from the international side because he clearly does better domestically.

  • Timmuh on April 2, 2012, 8:53 GMT

From the ouside, as someone who doesn't get to see much of Bangladesh, this seems to be a surprise. Ashraful is talented. However, results are what counts for someone who should be a senior player. Hopefully this will spur him to get himself sorted, and become the player he could be.

  • eddsnake on April 2, 2012, 8:51 GMT

Crazy that Shahriar Nafees is nowhere on this list. Did he not make 97 against Pakistan in Bangladesh's second last test?! A much better test player than Imrul Kayes who somehow has an A contract. Junaid Siddique should be on this list somewhere too.

  • on April 2, 2012, 7:03 GMT

Very wise decision by copping down awful Ash form the contract. But disagree with not including Shahriar NAFEES in main contract.

  • on April 2, 2012, 6:57 GMT

finally. that boy has no brain in his head

  • S.F.Ali on April 2, 2012, 6:47 GMT

Why Nasir Hossain in C and Mashrafe Mortaza in A grade? No doubt Mortaza is their main bowler but beefore BPL is wasnt even in the scene!!! and Nasir desrves better.

  • M_Rakibul_Islam on April 2, 2012, 6:45 GMT

Wise decision dropping both Ashraful & Shahadat. Ashraful is out of form 4m early 2010 & Shahadat didn't take any 5 wicket haul after Lord's in summer of 2010. Again Nasir's picking was matter of time & I hope next year he can improve his contract to at least A Grade. Anyway Shahriar NAFEES should b picked here even in B/C grade contract.

  • S.F.Ali on April 2, 2012, 6:38 GMT

Why Nasir Hossain in C and Mashrafe Mortaza in A grade? No doubt Mortaza is their main bowler but beefore BPL is want even in the scene!!! and Nasir desrves better.

  • Praxis on April 2, 2012, 6:34 GMT

Ashraful chopped, now that is a good news for BD cricket. Junaid Siddique is definitely a talented batsman, pity that he couldn't last long enough. He still has enough time perform in the domestic level to find his place back. Also its nice to see board still having plans for Kayes, but a Grade A contract isn't quite fair. People here claiming Nasir could've been given a higher grade but I think its fair given that he debuted just a while ago.

  • pvwadekar on April 2, 2012, 6:19 GMT

Dunno why people still claim that Mohammad Ashraful is talented .. his first class record is mediocre at best. At best he is semi-average player who played a couple of good innings ..but then so did Ajit Agarkar at Lords.

  • Gowza on April 2, 2012, 6:19 GMT

do they still do their contract system where you get a higher grade simply for having played more matches? that would be why imrul got a higher grade than nasir despite nasir being more consistent. nazimuddin shouldn't be there and they should have given rookie contracts to some up and comers like anamul haque, mominul haque and asif ahmed. i think they should have contracted more players tbh and change their grading system to not necessarily be reflected purely on how many matches the player has played.

  • satish619chandar on April 2, 2012, 5:27 GMT

Does Ash merit it?? A BIG NOOO.. So no problem in ditching him.. Almost everyone will say that "He is talented but never did any justice to it" in chorus.. None will complain this time..

  • on April 2, 2012, 5:20 GMT

    Nasir Hossain actually Deserves it..

  • justanotherfan13 on April 2, 2012, 4:45 GMT

Imrul Kayes is a better option than Nazimuddin any day. Tell you what, players like Shahadat and Nazimuddin have no future. I have not seen any improvement over the years. Sad to see Junaid missed out.

  • tapu707 on April 2, 2012, 3:58 GMT

ashraful should have been out long time ago...we just had too much experimental situation with him...raqib would be more handy than ashraful (though raqib has no place in the grade )...nasir and imrul should replace each other in the grading..thats all...near perfect team...

  • Meety on April 2, 2012, 0:58 GMT

@Ahmad Ismail Ibrahim - sort of agree re: Kayes. He hasn't played much of late for Bangladesh, however, I think he is one of the better ODI batsmen Bangladesh have. Probably worth given another go. == == == Thank god they've moved on from Ashraful. He should only be considered as a T20 spin-bowling option, batting at about #7 or #8!!!!!

  • johnathonjosephs on April 2, 2012, 0:57 GMT

Ashraful has long been inconsistent. On his days, he can be brilliant, but all other days, the number 11 can outbat him. This is a Bangladesh team looking for consistency not for generating an occasional upset. Good decision to ditch him.

  • on April 1, 2012, 23:34 GMT

I dont think imrul deserves an A grade..rather nasir hossain should have been given an A grade..what a find he is for bangladesh team!!hopefully these 15 men can continue with the good performace and prove their worth..i believe they can change the image of BD forever!!!

  • CAUSA on April 1, 2012, 23:09 GMT

Thanks God, Shahadat Hossain lost his Contract, I feel sorry for Asharaful, He should have been there. Nazimuddin should not play in one day & T20 formats. He should concentrate to play only test matches.

  • on April 1, 2012, 19:19 GMT

Why still contract players like Nazimuddin and Jahurul? They performed pretty bad in the Asia Cup and should've immediately be removed just like Shahadat Hossain. I don't understand why the BCB is still not giving a chance to Junaid Siddique because he performed so impressively with the bat at the BPL and deserves a second look. Shuvagata Hom is no good as well and instead these 3 players should be replaced by Junaid Siddique, Mominul Haque and some other deserving player. That way, the Bangladesh squad will look much better and unique. Everything else is acceptable and fine but still IMO, there are little mistakes as usual with the Bangladesh Team.

I would say this was an ideal time for Ashraful to have his last shot. With multiple performers emerging he would have a shot at doing justice to his talent and his failure might not have hurt the team as badly as it would have in the past.
