CLT20 set to have team from Pakistan

163

The Champions League Twenty20 is set to have a team from Pakistan for the first time. The BCCI, the league's largest stakeholder, has said it would inform the tournament's governing council ahead of its May 28 meeting that it had no objection to the participation of a team from Pakistan.

The decision was taken at the BCCI's working committee meeting in Chennai today, where it was also decided to distribute approx $13m to ex-Indian players, set up a BCCI anti-corruption unit, and set up matches between IPL teams and Associate/Affiliate countries.

BCCI president N Srinivasan said the CLT20 governing council had already decided to invite a Pakistani team for the next tournament, to be held in India in October; the BCCI was now concurring with that decision. "The CLT20 is owned by the BCCI, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa, so we will recommend to the governing council that the BCCI has no objection and is prepared to invite a Pakistan team," he said.

The news was welcomed by the PCB, which saw it as the first step towards restoring cricketing ties with India. The PCB had been pushing for the inclusion of sides from Pakistan, the only major Test-playing nation to not have teams in either the qualifiers or the main round of the tournament since it got off the ground in 2009. Pakistan were among the countries included in the first tournament, in 2008, but that event was cancelled after the Mumbai terrorist attacks and Pakistani teams had been kept out of subsequent tournaments.

The current champions are Sialkot Stallions - who, coincidentally, were also the representatives in the 2008 tournament that was never held. The Sialkot Regional Cricket Association had requested the PCB last month to make efforts to enable the participation of Sialkot in the Champions League. The PCB, in turn, had said that Sialkot's participation was dependent on the restoration of bilateral ties between India and Pakistan.

Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI vice-president and a minister in the Indian federal government, said there was no interference or green signal from the government. "Though PCB were asking us from the last three years, we did not consider that," Shukla said. "But now we felt it was good time to invite them and have acceded to the PCB request."

It is understood that it was Srinivasan who proposed the matter during the discussion in Chennai. Everyone felt that the political climate was conducive to a team from Pakistan to come and play and the working committee members accepted the proposal unanimously.

Pakistan players are currently excluded from the Indian Premier League as well. Shukla, also the IPL chairman, had said last month that their participation was also dependent on the resumption of India-Pakistan cricket ties.

A gust of cool air. Astonishing to see Indians allowing a Pakistani Domestic Team to play CLT20. Hope they do well.

  • drnaveed on May 14, 2012, 16:43 GMT

Pak should only focus on organizing a successful PPL, rather than planning to send its team to CL.Pak board should try every effort to make this PPL a successful one, by organizing it in some foreign Country,so that all big international stars play in it,as first impression is the last impression. yes, it will not be as glamorous as IPL outside the ground , but on the ground we have much talent than the indians.

  • captainpermod on May 14, 2012, 12:50 GMT

Standard of domestic cricket is not good enough in countries like BAN, ZIM, PAK, SL, NZ, WI. They will be having huge pressure to cope up with more stronger opponents of IPL teams as well as champion teams from SA and AUS.

I look forward to see Imran Nazir playing again. I have heard that Sialkot team is having tremendous domestic records. Let's see if they have got the IRON.

  • on May 14, 2012, 12:14 GMT

it was very unfortunate to see a team who has the best record in the domestic season around the world, not playing any international event... but now Sialkot stallions are coming hard, that's for sure!

this seems like a politically motivated decision, BCCI allow Pakistan team and mention they're willingness to play in SLPL, seems like a decision to minimize the chances of competition to IPL by SLPL and upcoming Pakistan league.

This is beyond understanding that teams/players from both India & Pakistan, in sports other than cricket, are frequently involve in their concerned games i.e. hokey, volley ball & Kabbdi etc... Then why not Cricket??? Either they should allow Pak team/players to participate in entires forms of cricket, most preferably bilateral cricket series.. or should stop other sports as well...

Come on India and Pakistan of politics and join hands for the prosperity of this region including this great sports with billions of fans around the globe... We would love to watch our players in test series, one dayers, T20s, IPL, Champions league etc....

  • Meety on May 14, 2012, 4:01 GMT

@chilled_avenger - agreed. Whilst I am okay with Oz, SA & India getting direct entry into the CL as they are the co-owners, 4 IPL franchises is too much. If the Champ League was played with no foreign players allowed in a franchise, the IPL sides would be quite average. The last edition saw 3 NSW players choosing the big money with the IPL over their state. I think the laws need to be tightened up whereby a player can only play for a foreign franchise IF his home franchise doesn't qualify. I'd be happy if 4 sides get automatic entry (IPL finalists, + Saffa & Ozzy winners), then the remaining 4 positions are fought between (Oz & Saffa runners up, ONE IPL side) & the winners of Pakistan, SL, WI, Eng, NZ, Bang & Zim domestic T20 comps. @Lord_Dravid - the BPL was a successful comp, & Dhaka was boosted by Afridi, Ajmal, Mahmood & Nazir's presence. They would be as worthy entries into the CL as any NZ, SL or WI domestic franchise.

I hope PCB and Pakistan Cricket team will show good attitude towards cricket and discipline to entertain cricket fans around the world. I hope India will include Pakistani players in IPL in future and they will play at least one complete series with Pakistan.

  • riverlime on May 13, 2012, 22:50 GMT

  • cool2cool on May 13, 2012, 21:36 GMT

@ riverlime: T & T had the the same team last year minus Pollard and Bravo. WHat happened to that time? DId they win? ooops, I checked the record and they were eliminated in the first round of main competition itself.....

  • cool2cool on May 13, 2012, 21:32 GMT

@Sehwag_Is_Ordinary: If Sehwag is ordinary, what quality of the team is against whom he scored 175 in WC last year??? I doubt if your team put together had scored more runs in ODI and Tests than him. Why would Pollard prefer to play for Dhaka ahead of Mumbai and T&T? Why would Azar Mahmood prefer to play for Dhaka ahead of Punjab and his English County?

  • on May 13, 2012, 20:01 GMT

Now just cross your fingures and pray that no cat dies in India otherwise the decision to include Pakistani Team could be withdrawn.

  • CandidIndian on May 13, 2012, 19:08 GMT

Champions league is bigger joke than IPL,4 IPL teams play in this with 4 foreign players, teams from rest of the nations are either 2 or 1 and number of foreign players in these teams are also not more than 2 , in fact some of the teams does not have foreign players at all.I am not sure how many die hard cricket fans take this tournament seriously,so one team from Pakistan too joins this circus, i dont think it will make any sort of positive difference to cricket or to cricketing ties between Indian and Pakistan. If BCCI is seriously thinking about resuming cricketing ties with Pakistan they should arrange for a test series between two nations. After hammering our team got in England and Aus, i am not sure how competitive will Indian team be in test cricket for a while but even if we lose young Indian batsman would gain great experience of playing high quality test cricket under pressure, however there wont be any cheer leaders or stars to clap though.

  • on May 13, 2012, 16:25 GMT

    Refreshing news from cricket..........

  • Desihungama on May 13, 2012, 15:36 GMT

@maddy20 - What a condescending comments. We don't really care about a league in Pakistan. We have plenty of domestic tournaments to go around for our local players to showcase their talent. And there are leagues around the world recognize our talent which is why you see them often hiring retired Pakistani players. Name any Indian coach overseas? And what is that supposed to mean by winning few hearts? Since when players from Pakistan went on world trial? You need to be able to learn to separate the political shenanigans of your Indian Cricket Council and ordinary people who watch and love this game in Pakistan.

  • ProdigyA on May 13, 2012, 15:12 GMT

  • Stark62 on May 13, 2012, 14:08 GMT

I would love to see the Dhaka Warriors play with the likes of Afridi, Ajmal, Mahmood and Stevens (very good T20 player) at their disposal, they would be a real handful.

Not to forget some of the local players like Ashraful, Mortaza, Sunny and Anamul Haque.

  • riverlime on May 13, 2012, 10:41 GMT

Even I like watching pollard and other wi crickets play in IPL, they bring something unique to the tournament.. But that does not mean that T&T are much better than the other teams.. On a given day in T20 Zimbabwe can defeat Australia, but we all know who the better team is...

  • on May 13, 2012, 8:58 GMT

lets win CLT20 show our class to the world and then introduce PPL. Ratings would automatically go higher.

  • Talhadagreat on May 13, 2012, 8:22 GMT

It's good to see India has welcomed a team from Pakistan. It's good for cricket and international relation between both nations. Sialkot Stallion is a very strong team, it comes from a huge Karachi Dolphin Fan. They are going to be a tough contender but I still believe teams from Big Bash would be the hardest to beat.

  • riverlime on May 13, 2012, 7:57 GMT

To all those who include Pollard in their respective teams, please stop fooling yourselves. He has agreed with the T&T (not the hapless, bumbling WICB) management to play the CLT20 for his home team. Remember, his training and development had NOTHING to do with the WICB, and like his teammates, he gives his allegiance to T&T. This applies also to Narine, Dwayne Bravo , and Kevon Cooper, all lighting up the IPL. For the record, the T&T team that won the WI T20 competition this year was........Lendl Simmons, Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Kevon Cooper, Ravi Rampaul, Jason Mohammed and Samuel Badree. This team beat JAMAICA by 63 runs in the final. I am therefore thankful that Sialkot is playing , so that T&T at least have some competition.

Good to see common sense and sports prevailing over politics and extremism. A few words about the team Sialkot Stallions. They are a bunch of happy go lucky cricketers who enjoy their cricket. The only current Pakistan regularis Abdur Rehman. Oldies include Shoaib Malik, Imran Nazir and Rana Naveed. Young fringe players include left arm spinner Raza Hasan, Wicket Keeper Shakeel Ansar and batter Haris Sohail. No superstars, no frills , yet they have won the Pakistan T20 five times out of seven. Modest team. Tremendous record. Enjoy them !!!

  • CricketFanInJapan on May 13, 2012, 6:14 GMT

This is good news for Pakistan. It's not right to have such talented cricketers unable to take part in India's T20 tournaments, mostly due to politics.

  • LillianThomson on May 13, 2012, 4:32 GMT

Pakistan's success over the last two years has largely come about thanks to their exclusion from IPL and CLT20, which ravage techniques like a cancer and make players start to expect great riches to come without hard work. As a New Zealander who wishes Pakistan well, I'm disappointed that their players will probably start to lose their old-fashioned work ethic now and become like the Indian team.

  • Afkham on May 12, 2012, 22:08 GMT

well this move is good for the credibility of the tournament also because it was really looking depleted without a side whose record in the three T 20 world cups so far is better than any other team in the world . Now the champion of this tournament would be the real champion , the previous were not .

  • on May 12, 2012, 21:15 GMT

@ Sehwag_Is_Ordinary : I guess you should follow cricket more often than you do to keep track of records. Afridi is known for his ball tampering skillss more than anything else. Mahmood, Imran Nazir, Saeed Ajmal etc.., don't even deserve place in Pakistan team.

It will be interesting to see if Dhaka Gladiators can win any game at all. All the best or your team.

  • maddy20 on May 12, 2012, 20:12 GMT

Despite of the negative comments from some of the Pakistani fans its good to see a majority of them are actually in favor of it. Those against it should realize that PPL has not even have a blueprint as of now and I do not think any foreign players would want to join any of the teams in the current situation. The smart move would be to play the CLT20, showcase their talent and win a few hearts on the otherside of their border. And who knows it could pave way for an India vs Pak series! Look at the brightside fellas! @Sehwag is ordinary Do you think Pollard will play for Dhaka instead of Mumbai and Mahmood will play for Punjab? Last time I checked 900,000>50,000 and 300,000>20,000! Rest of them don't matter!

  • Cpt.Meanster on May 12, 2012, 20:00 GMT

Test cricket is BORING !!! international cricket is NOT what it used to be 30 years back. Too many meaningless series played nowadays. IPL and club level T20 cricket is the FUTURE of the sport. It's the only way cricket can be promoted around the world. The BCCI are the torchbearers of cricket. The most POWERFUL cricketing nation on the planet is doing the right things to bring the game forward. I hope everyone supports them. Sure monetary benefits will always be there. A Pakistani team in the CLT20 will hopefully improve relations between India and Pakistan.

What a swift move by BCCI to counter Pakistan's own league. Frankly, at this point Pakistan should just reject to participate in Cl or IPL. They should look to play in other leagues around the world, there are plenty. Why keep them out for all this time to begin with? Players are professional cricketers and not school kids who need scolding and bullying and finally cajoling. What a joke with the game of cricket.

ohh plzz no teams from bangladesh..their players and their winning T20 team arent of international standards. Since 2000 theres been no improvement for them *sigh*

  • gunnerr4life on May 12, 2012, 14:57 GMT

This is done to stop Pak organizing their own league , which is good according to me because there is alot of non-serious cricket going on like ipl , bpl , slpl , etc. .. I bet the BCCi will allow Pak players to play in the next Ipl season just to stop them from starting their own league !

  • on May 12, 2012, 14:56 GMT

its a good move that BCCI is inviting one Pak team, but i think in the end, the Indian government wont allow the team to tour India.

  • Asmax on May 12, 2012, 14:46 GMT

Nonsense this,,, Reject CLT20 and start your ppl. This move is to distract Pak from organizing their own ppl. Pak has better cricket talent than all we need to depend on our own resources. PCB Pls dump this idea.

  • on May 12, 2012, 14:10 GMT

TO PAK FANS: Ijaz Butt actually refused to send a team from Pakistan for CLT20 couple of years ago and then backtracked. That is why some comments from Indians mention 'Pakistan refusal'.

  • getsetgopk on May 12, 2012, 14:09 GMT

I dont know why some Pakistan fans are jumping up and down with joy just because a team from Pak is invited to CL. Look, the main thing behind these T20 leagues is money, now only three boards have stack in CL, IN, AUS and SA, the rest of the boards are mere spectators. I believe ENG, PAK, SL and NZ should launch something like this. This way more teams can join the party adding to the competition beside making money.

  • SPORTSWITCH on May 12, 2012, 14:09 GMT

It will be 1st champions league. For the preceding 3 editions, it was champions league without the ultimate champs!!!

  • on May 12, 2012, 14:03 GMT

why CLT20 to be held in INDIA alone? why cant we take it to AUSTRALIA /ENGALAND AND OTHER COUNTRIES?

  • rahulcricket007 on May 12, 2012, 13:40 GMT

IF YOU CORRECTLY REMEMBER THEN THE FIRST CLT20 WAS POSTPONED FROM DEC 2008 TO SEP 2009 . IN 2008 CLT20 NEVER HAPPEN .

  • rahulcricket007 on May 12, 2012, 13:37 GMT

THE MOVE WAS EXPECTED FROM BCCI THEY ALWAYS DO THINGS AFTER ANALYZING SITUATIONS . NOW THEN SLC HAS REJECTED TO HOST PAK - AUS MATCHES SO BCCI WANTS TO TIE WITH PCB BY ALLOWING SIALKOT IN CLT20 .

  • on May 12, 2012, 13:28 GMT

@ hafeez khan:- pakistan should play thier domestic t20 champions in CL and then they can delay thier PPL or they should do it early but don't make a mistake by not sending a team in CL otherwise they will be thrown out CL by saying they are not intrested and other thing They should play 3 from ipl, 2 from big bash aus, 2 from SA 1 from pak, ENG, WI,NZ, BAN, SL and three from qualifires by playin 1 team from each country of 3 teams in 3 rounds and winners of each group will be qualified then it will be 16 teams then it will be equal oppertunity for each country then play 4 gropus of robin round then quaterfinals , semi and final... that wat they should do.. anyway i m an Indian but i support game cauz game make players......

  • on May 12, 2012, 11:45 GMT

BCCI Should invite BPL champion(DHAKA GLADIATOR) while they are interested to invite a team from Pakistan for CLT20.

  • ejsiddiqui on May 12, 2012, 11:36 GMT

Beware, Sialkot Stallions is no ordinary team. It has dashing batsmen like Imran Nazir and very good all-rounders like Rana Naveed (leading wicket taker in Big Bash this year) and Shoaib Malik, and specialist bowlers like Abdur Rahman and 19 year old sensation Raza Hasan.

Currently, 6-7 players of Sialkot have been selected in National team in different formats.

  • on May 12, 2012, 11:32 GMT

Its very Obvious that. CLT20 and IPL was loosing attraction and money too. In Pakistan , most popular channel is broadcasting IPL and trust me there is Zero interest among people about IPL. Infact BPL was followed more in Pakistan and was alot of excitement about local T20 cup which was big hit in Pakistan. I see a lot of following of Pak players in T20, Afridi, umer gul, hafeez, imran nazir, saeed ajmal, akmal bros and list goes on. I feel Pakistan have got place on merit. So no politics in sports is always good. Overall good Decision.

  • Rajeev129 on May 12, 2012, 11:26 GMT

Wavvvv really good news. BCCI recommendation means no one will object it. But my real doubt is will there be only team ? Is it the quality of SA/ENG teams better than PAK ? They should allow runner up teams also. My suggestion is to invite all the domestic champions(Finalists in case of IPL) into the group stages directly and ask the runner-ups to come in through the qualifiers. Two Pakistan teams means it will be a cracking tournament.

  • da_man_ on May 12, 2012, 11:18 GMT

I'm sorry, but after the IPL scandal of no one bidding for a Pakistani player, I don't think the PCB should send a team. Once bitten twice shy etc.

It is good step by big brother to accomadate younger brother. This is the way to build good relation between two cricket loving countries. India is big nation and have lot of potential and talents. This will promote cricket and fans will enjoy the game.Pakistan should be happy but due the experience of the past should not be over optimist.

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:47 GMT

It is good decision by BCCI to invite a team from Pakistan, but I am afraid in October Pakistan Team will be busy while they are trying to there own PPL-T-20 and trying to invite International players. Lets see what is come-up any way it is good way for normalization the cricket affairs with two countries. It will be benefited for both crickets fans

  • Afridipak on May 12, 2012, 10:41 GMT

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:38 GMT

  • RajCSK on May 12, 2012, 10:36 GMT

@SamAsh07...... I think pakistan already accepted BCCI is superior in world cup semi final......even afridi played like he dont care. dont you think the same. Its good to see pakistan players in CLT20, Hopefully in IPL 6 also.

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:34 GMT

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:33 GMT

wasn't there a no-objection given by the CL council in 2010 or 2011 also, and Pakistan didn't send a team? I remember something like that, so its not entirely certain that a Pakistani side will play in this CL.

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:32 GMT

i feel the system is wrong in CLT20, It shud be like this-

2 teams each from India,SA,AUS, 1 from England ie.7 teams 3 or 5 teams selected from qualifiers -

QUALIFIERS - 1 each from SL,NZ,WI,BAN,PAK,ENG(Runner-ups), IPL 3rd and IPL4th team..making it a competetive one and really happy to see a Pak team in this t20 champions league

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:26 GMT

Are they going to allow Dhaka Gladiators from the BPL

  • KiwiRocker- on May 12, 2012, 10:26 GMT

Avinsh Singh: Its a people of your type who know nothing about the game of cricket. India is only one of the teams in Champions league and it is different from IPL. BCCI, and other test playing nations realise that Champions league is following the same path of IPL,i.e losing attraction and have ended up inviting useless teams. I mean they had a team from NZ in last edition..Trust me, it was a big joke around in NZ. Pakistan has always been a top nation in T20 and it is evident from the fact they they have won T20 world cup as well as have been runners up.A team from pakistan also won ICL ( the orginal ideal before IPL), and Pakistani players were also sucessful in IPL...One Pakistani player Azhar Mehmood has boasted an average Punjab team to new heights..Accordingly, BCCI is now stuck between rock and hard place and they are making a common sense decision by requesting a team from Pakistan to play in CL.20. Pakistan also did not refuse to play in India as they played WC semi!

  • Meety on May 12, 2012, 10:25 GMT

If this pans out, then the next edition of the CL will be worthwhile.

  • on May 12, 2012, 10:22 GMT

A very good decision from BCCI after long long time, sports nothing to do with politics. Hope soon will be a INDO PAK series

  • chilled_avenger on May 12, 2012, 10:21 GMT

It will be better to have equal representation from each country rather than letting it being overwhelmed with IPL teams! Last time the Domestic T20 Champions of England had to play Qualifying Round but 3 IPL teams got direct entry to the League Stage. Even in the League Stage 4 out of 10 teams were from IPL while South Africa and Australia had 2 teams each and rest of the countries had just one team. This time Domestic T20 champions from each country should get Direct entry and only Runner-up from the countries should play Qualifying Round! It was also strange to see most of the non-IPL teams relying on Local talent and using at most 1-2 Foreign players but Mumbai Indians using as many as 5 Foreigners in some early matches citing injuries to major players(even though one of Mumbai's 'injured' local player was playing some local match at that time)! I know my words won't make any difference as rules are already laid out for this year's CTL20! Oh,and BTW I am an Indian and I watch IPL!

  • chainsawww on May 12, 2012, 10:20 GMT

Finally good news for Pakistani Cricket fans...Not too late...One should welcome the step...Pakistani players add variety and world class challenges to opposition specially with ball...M looking forward to see Pakistani team in CLT20...Pakistan Team should get fair chance to play against all international team including India...Let sports not get messed with political conflict...Though Pakistan team is going through tough phase off the field,m impressed seeing the challenges the put on field but though doubtful regarding bringing cricket back their soil; peace matters...Never say too late we welcome the step...Let them play...

  • billbowden311 on May 12, 2012, 10:18 GMT

BCCI should not have so much control in world cricket, Daryl Harper said so Michael Holding said so. "Brazil was so dominant in FIFA world cups, but they could not always go and get their way in football, so India should not be allowed!" Quote Michael Holding at MCC!
