Big Picture

Both Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore are coming off comprehensive wins from their previous games. There was a similarity in the way the wins were achieved - the bowlers kept the opposition down to less-than-daunting scores, paving the way for the top order to cut it down to size with plenty of balls remaining.

Super Kings had the easier of the two outings, winning by ten wickets against a listless Kings XI Punjab. A combined bowling effort by Super Kings restricted Kings XI to an underwhelming 138 in Mohali, before M Vijay and Michael Hussey smashed fifties to win in 17.2 overs in one of the most one-sided games of the tournament so far. Royal Challengers did well on Thursday to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to 154 in Bangalore, after the visitors threatened to score in excess of 170 at one stage. The seamers prevented partnerships from developing and struck regularly towards the end on a good batting wicket. Chris Gayle played the kind of innings viewers are accustomed to - watchful in the beginning, followed by a sixes barrage - and stood firm to remain unbeaten on 85. Super Kings will need to cut through the top order quickly, to take an early advantage. Royal Challengers' Muttiah Muralitharan, though, will have to sit out this game due to the ban on Sri Lanka players in Chennai.

The two teams played out a nailbiter the last time they met in Chennai. Chasing 206, Super Kings had all but lost the game, needing 43 off the last two overs, until Albie Morkel turned the script around with some frenetic hitting. Virat Kohli bowled the most forgettable over of his career, leaking 28. Now as Royal Challengers' captain, will he trust himself with the ball again?

Players to watch

In his two games so far for Royal Challengers, RP Singh turned in exact figures of 3 for 27, both in winning causes. Two of those were important scalps, that of a rampaging Thisara Perera (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Eoin Morgan (Knight Riders), before the latter could explode in the last four overs. RP, who was bought by the franchise at the auction this year, is proving to be a good acquisition, considering he is one of the leading wicket-takers in the IPL, despite having slipped off the national radar.

R Ashwin was, unusually, brought on as the sixth bowler in the match against Kings XI. The offspinner has been used cleverly as an opening bowler by his captain MS Dhoni at the franchise and national level. Given Ashwin's success against Gayle with the new ball in earlier editions - the IPL 2011 final the most memorable - it will be interesting to see if Dhoni goes back to his tried and trusted strategy. Gayle v Ashwin will be the contest to watch.

Stats and trivia

  • Twelve matches between the two teams have produced 3750 runs and 150 wickets, the most runs and wickets involving any two teams.
  • Super Kings lead the head-to-head in the IPL with seven wins, while Royal Challengers have five victories.
  • Only seven runs separate Gayle and Kohli in the run charts so far, with Kohli keeping the Orange Cap with 198 runs.

Quotes

"With the way Gayle is going, it will be difficult to keep the orange cap."
Virat Kohli on his rampaging opener.

"Ashwin has bowled well to Gayle in the past and we've used him well. Now we've got a bit more firepower and we have other options against him. We're definitely a stronger bowling side than we've been in previous years."
Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming thinks his team can handle Chris Gayle

As far as the CSK are concerned, the focus will be to stop the Gayle storm. If they manage to do that, half the battle is won. The inform Kohli and the dangerous De Villiers will be their next focus. CSK have bolstered their bowling this season by including one of the best bowlers in this format, Nannes. But their bowling still has some weak links. Their batting has not got many worries. They will be backing their inform openers to give a steady start again where the power hitters can capitalize.

For Bangalore, there will be nothing better than Gayle firing. Kohli's good form has put a slit to the comments on Gayle's dependence. Unfortunately for them, the local talents lack fire power in batting. Vinay, Jaidev and RP form a decent pace attack. But Murali will be a very big loss for them in the turning Chennai track. CSK will definitely enjoy the advantage of Murali not playing. But Vettori is another quality spinner to replace Murali.

    Waiting for Ashwin vs Gayle..

Dan Chrsitian ? really again that guy should not be in any IPL side dunno why these mediocre Aussies get so many games out here, I'd much rather have seen Barnwell get a game than Christian again after his many failures.

  • on April 13, 2013, 14:28 GMT

Its evident that except Dirk Nannes Chennai lacks a quality bowler who can hold off runs.. Ashwin, Jadeja and Company6 can be hit all around the park by Gayle or Deviliers. Chennai has already changed their Indian fats bolwer A. Rajpoot and their opening bowling has become weak. CSK would try to chase the total down rather than bat first, though I would be happy if RCB thrashes CSK and becomes table toppers gain. GO RCB Go

  • Kaiser75 on April 13, 2013, 14:23 GMT

It's kind of unfair for RCB to play without Murali if the track turns out to be a turner .

  • on April 13, 2013, 14:14 GMT

Its the best match match ever.my support will be to CSK.all the best for the CSK players but at the same time RCB is the powerful team with Gayle.it will be the challenge to the Dhoni.Hope dhoni will register the another victory in the IPL by beating RCB.all the best for the RCB too!!!

Mr.CricNCode, T20 is all about ''fell a short a little''. Whatever the performance, you got to be the winner at the end of the day. That's what matters.......:)

@CricNcode - Chill Dude, no use raking up the caps factor, especially in the early stages of the IPL...every team wld love to have Gayle no dbt, but then the reason guys have taken up the Gayle factor is that in crunch situations, especially in the last 2 editions, if Gayle fails, RCB fails..And it wont take much time to rake up Albie's 28 run mayhem or a Raina/Dhoni partnership that took 80 odd runs off 7 overs in 2011 knockouts for any average CSK fan..Lets enjoy the 40 overs of entertainment, then switch off and disconnect the moment its over.... :)

  • CricNcode on April 13, 2013, 13:18 GMT

Some CSK fans seems to be in a complete denial here. For RCB, Kohli, Vinay, RP, Henriques, Unadkat have already made significant contributions (and some match winning performances) apart from Gayle.... Vinay is the leading wicket taker, Kohli held the orange cap twice, RP is right behind vinay in wickets tally....Stop harping about Gayle's dependence...accept the fact that you are jealous of not having him on your side...do you remember Kumble's heroics in 2008 at Chennai, or Manish Pandey's brilliance in 2009 semi-final, or Uthappa's smashing of Ashwin in 2010 in Bangalore, and Agarwal's thumping last year in Chennai...it's unfortunate for RCB that they fell a little short on a couple of times.

It's long-time you come out of the oblivion and start appreciating the quality of the players they have.

Without Gyale RCB is pale & stale

  • on April 13, 2013, 12:08 GMT

For to-day's match, CSK has to call Jakati instead of Rajpoot. Jakati is a successful bowler for CSK in previous IPL matches. Ashwin should be asked to bowl from the one end at the beginning, instead of playing at the end of the match like vs. MI

  • on April 13, 2013, 11:20 GMT

CSK is best of all not just by the skipper but all players. Each and every one working hard in field and showing tremendus performence in game...

  • on April 13, 2013, 9:31 GMT

The only danger that will be faced by CSK from RCB will be the form of Gayle , Devilliers and Kohli to some extent . RCB's bowlers will be fodder to CSK batsmen . At the end of the match,CSK will emerge as the winner .

which player can be good to choose for captaincy Gayle,Kohli,Dinesh K,D Bravo,RP,R Aswin,Rohit Sharma

  • on April 13, 2013, 8:18 GMT

Most of the top IPL teams rely on INDIVIDUAL Performances But every player of CSK is a match winner on his day.. From Hussey, Vijay, Raina, Dhoni, Morkel, Bravo, to Ashwin, Jadeja, Nannes nd everyone else.. Each and every player contributes and gives his more than 100% on the cricket field.. That's why we never have our hand on the ORANGE CAP or PURPLE CAP but, YELLOW CAP is the MOST DANGEROUS cap in the IPL.. ;) You will find the truth of what I say in course of time...

  • ladycricfan on April 13, 2013, 7:55 GMT

Expecting a thriller. With spinners from Ashwin and Jadeja and toe crushers from Nannes and Morris , Gayle's six hitting will be put to rest. Gayle < 30.

  • PrasannaVenkateshan on April 13, 2013, 7:45 GMT

    RCB XI:Gayle,Agarwal,Kohli,AB de Villiers,M Henriques,D Vettori,Arun Karthik, Vinay Kumar,RP Singh,Murali Kartik

CSK XI: Vijay,Michael Hussey,Suresh Raina,Subramaniam Badrinath, Dwayne Bravo,MS Dhoni,Ravindra Jadeja,Ravichandran Ashwin, Shadab Jakati, Chris Morris, Dirk Nannes

  • on April 13, 2013, 7:45 GMT

with Muralitharan to sit out this game, RCB spin options are limited. CSK has the home advantage. If they can eliminate Gayle early, the game is their's. RCB has a very tough opponent today. Clash of the titans really.

  • riverlime on April 13, 2013, 7:29 GMT

time for Henriques to go. Rampaul would be a much better fit in Chennai, where he could hustle the batsmen a little more with his skiddy pace. He is also a handy lower order batsman, much better than RP and Vinay.

  • on April 13, 2013, 7:00 GMT

T20 is a game of few balls so those few make it interesting .Let us hope this match will be last ball deciding match

  • on April 13, 2013, 6:40 GMT

Remember Ashwin vs Gayle.... And you can't forget Kholi vs Morkel....

  • manekroxx on April 13, 2013, 5:42 GMT

    RCB XI: 1. C Gayle 2. S Sohal 3. V Kohli (c) 4. AB de Villiers (wk) 5. S Tiwary 6. M Henriques 7. D Vettori 8. V Kumar 9. M Kartik 10. RP Singh 11. J Unadkat

RCB should give Sunny Sohal a go in place of Mayank Agarwal who misfires more often than not. AB needs to get back to keeping where he belongs. This will open up room for a specialist batsman - i.e. Tiwary. It's time to see if he has pulled his socks up after his dismal performance last season. Vettori is the obvious replacement for Muralidharan since the Chennai wicket is suited to spinners. Rampaul will have to wait for another opportunity.

RCB's bowling is fine. But their batting in the previous matches have been too heavily dependent on the top order. If Gayle, Kohli or AB were to be dismissed, the match would be as good as over, so it's important they bat deep, especially against CSK.

  • on April 13, 2013, 4:58 GMT

Happy to see RCB vs CSK again!!! Hope there should firings all around the ground by Gayle and Dhoni!!!

  • .GaMeOvEr. on April 13, 2013, 4:52 GMT

I think Dhoni can counter Gayle with his spin options. and RCB needs to post atleast 180+ if they need to win against a strong CSK batting line up

  • on April 13, 2013, 4:32 GMT

Four foriegn players for RCB will be Gayle,Vetorri ,AB and the fourth no choice

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 13, 2013, 4:31 GMT

If Mayank Agarwal can play Ashwin early in the innnings and protect gayle, later gayle can ruin his good bowling figures.Lot of meduim pacers, fast bowlers and a left arm spinner for gayle to be content with.

My XI: Gayle, Mukund, Kohli, AB, Henriques,Mayank, Rahul,Vettori,RP,Vinay,Murali (K)

  • Cpt.Meanster on April 13, 2013, 4:24 GMT

@syedmnaqvi: I am glad to see to hear that you love the IPL. Hopefully, Pakistani players will feature in the future seasons of the IPL. I am having my fingers crossed.

  • syedmnaqvi on April 13, 2013, 3:57 GMT

I want all my fantasy team players to perform. NO problem. Love IPL. Pakistan players should be allowed to play.

  • rakesh_decepticon on April 13, 2013, 3:26 GMT

Go Red Devils (RCB) !! This time Gyle will ruin Ashwin's good bowling figure .

  • timohyj on April 13, 2013, 3:14 GMT

RCB should find a way for rampaul to get into the playing 11 with murali not available. Rampaul in for murali and kartik in for unadkat. But on the slow chennai surface they might want to play another spinner in which case KP Appana will some on for RP or vinay. Of course there is also the option of putting vettori in but he is a more defensive bowler and without murail i think RCB needs a strike option.

  • CheerforUnderdogs on April 13, 2013, 1:54 GMT

Chennai will be turning track... Spinners is must for RCB... They might go with Vettori instead of Murali but does he have match practice??? Spin could be the difference in the end...

  • aries_d on April 13, 2013, 1:05 GMT

Going to be tough. I want to see how RCB handles this if they lose Gayle in the first over, esp when chasing. Depending too much on Gayle is a problem. AB has come in, but he is yet to find form in IPL.

  • on April 13, 2013, 0:47 GMT

Why not vettori in place of Muraldiharan?

  • SRAM20 on April 13, 2013, 0:25 GMT

This will be a top notch contest. Gayle vs Ashwin will be key. Dhoni needs to bring on Ashwin as quickly as possible in the attack since Gayle opens the innings. And CSK should hopefully get to bat second, because letting Gayle bat second with a target to chase is akin to putting yourself under the SICKLE, waiting to be slaughtered. Last time, CSK almost chased down MI's score. So chasing is what CSK should do, and I am sure Dhoni will think the same (if he wins the toss tomorrow).

  • TRAM on April 12, 2013, 23:35 GMT

Rajpoot would be smashed by Gayle, Kholi & AB. Baba Aparajith should come in his place, since Chennai is spin track and Aparajith is also a good bat.

  • sboyipl on April 12, 2013, 21:46 GMT

i think csk win the game .

  • on April 12, 2013, 21:20 GMT

Not bothered about the result of this match, just thinking which of the CSK players will win the Man of the Match in the final.............

  • fah4 on April 12, 2013, 20:58 GMT

One of the biggest match of the IPL it will become lot more interesting knowing it is MSD vs Kohli. Supporting RCB for tomorrow go RCB go.

  • Kulaputra on April 12, 2013, 20:51 GMT

RCB is a good bowler short. I will call it Chennai.

  • on April 12, 2013, 20:40 GMT

  • Slizzle on April 12, 2013, 19:42 GMT

With Gayle, Kohli and AB RCB definitely favourites but in a knock out scenario I would call Chennai favourites for their BMT....so for this game I will go with RCB

  • on April 12, 2013, 19:31 GMT

its ICE vs FIRE contest ....lets see who will win

  • on April 12, 2013, 19:29 GMT

RCB overseas players should be Gayle, AB, Moses and Barnwell

  • on April 12, 2013, 19:25 GMT

since Murli can't play in Chennai give Barnwell a chance. He can be destructive like Pollard and plus he blows. He is an excellent fielder also. Don't forget that game he played against the Gayle Jamaicans. He got a cool head to play under pressure. Give him a chance RCB!!

  • sadanand007 on April 12, 2013, 19:24 GMT

In place of murali, take ravi rampal. It will be good option to stop csk and do not forgot to take kartik. Channai is good spin wicket

  • GrindAR on April 12, 2013, 19:10 GMT

CSK vs RCB always high stakes game (regardless of points) and always closely contested. Can we expect the same...?

  • K.U.YOGESHWARAMURUGAN on April 12, 2013, 18:24 GMT

I think csk go with without rajpoot because he is not bowl full 4overs.raina there for parttime option.so pick aprajith to boost the batting and he also handy in off spin.for rcb now strong with kohli form and low order have strong t20 players like henriques and AB.

  • ThyrSaadam on April 12, 2013, 18:16 GMT

Good contest on the cards. Neither team has a great advantage but CSK are playing at home so cant discount that!

  • on April 12, 2013, 18:08 GMT

Its not only ashwin but other bowlers such as morris and nannes also would try to make a impact

  • Rabin.Neupane on April 12, 2013, 17:56 GMT

  • Samychennai on April 12, 2013, 17:29 GMT

Gayle is the big threat from RCB side. If CSK removed Gayle early then Virat will take the side for 140 add runs which could be conveniently chase by CSK. If Virat also got out early then match will be one sided on CSK's hand. I am so excited to watch how our team is going to handle the storm. The new Indian boy should be on the bench as he has show nothing and worst in field. Abarajit or Imtiaz should get the game tomorrow with the same squad played earlier. Go CSK Go

  • on April 12, 2013, 16:59 GMT

Gayle vs Ashwin is the main battle with in the war. If Gayle can go through the first few overs calmly as he normally does, then its RCB. Nice to see some of the big players like Virat, Vijay, Hussey getting some runs under the belt before this match. May be Raina, ABD are saving it for the big matches. Raina will surely win CSK the knock out matches.

Good contest on the cards. Neither team has a great advantage but CSK are playing at home so cant discount that!
