Day three of four

County Championship Division One

Middlesex v Lancashire, Lord's
Scorecard
Andy Strauss (50 not out) and Sven Koenig (35 not out) led the Middlesex fightback after being forced to follow on against Lancashire at Lord's. Middlesex finished on 89 for 0, still 172 runs behind. Rain halted Lancashire's convincing progress for a large part of the day, but Gary Keedy ensured Middlesex would have to bat again by spinning out their last five wickets for 51, for figures of 6 for 68.

Surrey 393 beat Nottinghamshire 211 and 176 by an innings and six runs
Scorecard
Surrey enjoyed a Sunday stroll at Trent Bridge, to record their first win of the championship by an innings and six runs. Resuming the day in dire straits at 94 for 6, Notts did their best to make Surrey bat again with Steve Elworthy's entertaining 52 from 73 balls, which included a last-wicket stand of 45 with Charlie Shreck. However, Martin Bicknell (5 for 83) finished things off when he had Elworthy caught by Azhar Mahmood. Further bad news for Notts was their deduction of a quarter of a point for a slow over-rate.

Warwickshire v Sussex, Edgbaston
Scorecard
After having the worst of things yesterday, Sussex fought back well to leave their match against Warwickshire in the balance. Timothy Ambrose (85) and Matthew Prior (84) - both wicketkeepers by trade - shone with the bat in a seventh-wicket partnership of 125, before Sussex were bowled out for 367, 55 runs behind Warwickshire. Jason Lewry then removed both openers with only 18 on the board, and Robin Martin-Jenkins trapped Mark Wagh lbw for 38, leaving the dynamic duo of Ian Bell and Jamie Troughton at the crease with Warwickshire 134 runs ahead and seven wickets in hand.

Division Two

Glamorgan v Gloucestershire, Cardiff
Scorecard
Gloucestershire declared their first innings on 400, and tightened their grip against Glamorgan at Cardiff. Matt Windows anchored the innings with a hard-fought 63, and last pair Jonathan Lewis and Ian Fisher added to the fun with an unbroken stand of 49, in which Lewis hammered 37 not out from 19 balls. Lewis then picked up two wickets - Adrian Dale and Mike Powell - as Glamorgan ended their second innings on 70 for 3, 191 runs in arrears.

Yorkshire v Derbyshire, Headingley
Scorecard
Yorkshire were up against it at Headingley, but were spared the embarrassment of following on by Derbyshire's captain Dominic Cork. Yorkshire suffered a monumental collapse when they lost their last five first-innings wickets for a mere 26 runs, but Cork decided against putting them back in, opting for quick runs instead. And Michael di Venuto didn't disappoint his captain as he crashed a quick 77, while Chris Bassano enabled them to declare at 214 for 4, with a patient 55 not out. Yorkshire finished their second innings on 12 for 0, still 394 runs behind.

Worcestershire v Zimbabweans, Worcester

Other games

Adnan Akram led Cambridge University to a thrilling win against Northants at Fenner's. Set 263 to win, Akram scored a dashing 98, and along with Tom Webley and Simon Marshall, who both scored 59, was the hero of the day. Meanwhile, Durham University's Alex Loudon scored 172 against Durham's supposedly superior county side, who were spared more embarrassment this season when the students fell just 14 runs short of a win. Oxford University also put a up a good show in their draw against Hampshire in The Parks, but it wasn't such good news for Loughborough, who went down by an innings and 35 runs to Leicestershire at Grace Road.
