The city of Calcutta will celebrate Saurav Ganguly's 28th birthday on
Saturday in a very special way. His father will launch an exclusive
set of cricket bats named after the Indian skipper, who is presently
playing county cricket for Lancashire. Ganguly is the third Indian
cricketer after whom bats will be named. Earlier Sunil Gavaskar had
launched Sunny Tonny while MRF had honoured Sachin Tendulkar by
launching a bat called `Genius'.
A sports goods manufacturer from Meerut has decided to come out with
bats named after Ganguly. However, the company will release five
categories of bats within the price range between Rs 2,000 to Rs
5,000. The categories are Prince, Tiger, Six Hitter, King and
Skipper. It is here that Ganguly has achieved an unique distinction in
the fact that he will be the first Indian cricketer to have five
separate classes of bats named after him. The product will be launched
by Saurav's father Chandi Ganguly at a function on Saturday at the B.
Dasgupta sports shop. Incidentally Ganguly picks up all his bats from
this shop.
Ganguly, incidentally has not charged any endorsement fee from Sareen
Sports Industries, who are the manufacturers of these bats, the reason
for this being that he wants the bats to be available at affordable
prices.
