Match facts

Big picture

A year ago, the hangover of the World Cup had barely ended before another exhausting tournament started. Fans dehydrated by the emotions of India's World Cup victory were now expected to show up in those numbers for the IPL. The fans and players had one thing in common - both were knackered. The scenario this year is not entirely different. India's horrific season must have drained them mentally. Their followers are tired of defeat. The next two months will reveal the fans' true faith in their own players.

Indian cricket has come a full circle in a year, and the man at the epicentre is MS Dhoni, who's back to leading Chennai Super Kings tomorrow in the IPL opener against Mumbai Indians. Public memory is short, and all it could take is a few victories for his fans to restore their faith. The reshuffling of squads last year didn't affect the defending champions Super Kings. They thrived on a power-packed batting line-up, backed by a competent spin attack. They spent their auction purse in getting hold of a spinning-allrounder in Ravindra Jadeja. Dhoni, unfortunately, found himself shouldering too much burden as India captain, which affected his performances. If Super Kings are to succeed again, this squad, with varying degrees of experience, need to rally around him.

His Mumbai counterpart, Harbhajan Singh, was largely disconnected from India's plunge because he was dealing with a slump of his own. Poor form and injury kept him on the sidelines, but he regained pride by leading Mumbai to the Champions League title last year. He finds himself in the same role this year, after Sachin Tendulkar decided to step down as captain. Mumbai may be missing Andrew Symonds, but the squad's intimidating enough without him. It's fitting that the defending champions are taking on the team to beat in the opener.

Mumbai are lucky to have their entire international contingent available for the season. Super Kings have a couple of injury concerns, but the core of their squad - barring Michael Hussey who is to join at the end of the month - is available.

Players to watch

Since his 95 in the IPL final last year (and 434 for the tournament), M Vijay has had a quiet 11 months. He underperformed in the West Indies and found himself out of contention. He had his moments of success during the domestic season, but this IPL will again be crucial towards making a return to the national side, at least when it comes to auditioning for the World Twenty20. Another chance beckons for the opening batsman.

Harbhajan Singh is another player who could use this tournament as an opportunity to make a comeback. The criticism was that he had become a defensive bowler, bowling flatter lengths which weren't fetching him enough wickets. His domestic season wasn't good enough to force a return either. R Ashwin's mixed returns in Australia should improve Harbhajan's chances. But Harbhajan will know that he will be up against the likes of Pragyan Ojha and Rahul Sharma, at least in the limited-overs formats. He needs wickets, and plenty of them.

2011 head-to-head

Mumbai and Super Kings played each other just once last year. Rohit Sharma's 87 off 48 balls took Mumbai to 164. Super Kings were well-placed at 98 for 2 in the 12th over, but Harbhajan inflicted a collapse, taking five wickets to give Mumbai an eight-run win. S Badrinath was the last-man standing with 71.

Stats and trivia

  • Super Kings' overall win-loss ratio across four seasons (1.54) is comfortably ahead of second-placed Mumbai, who have a corresponding value of 1.26.

  • Chepauk, traditionally a high-scoring venue, experienced a drop in the run-rate in 2011 to 7.86. The rate was above 8 in the first and third IPL seasons.

  • Mumbai and Super Kings have played eight games against each other and the head-to-head record is locked at 4-4.

    Quotes

"If you notice we have done exceedingly well when the pitch has been responsive with good bounce. So for us one of the first things to check will be the bounce of the pitch."
Super Kings' R Ashwin on the relaid pitch at Chepauk

"My body is shaping up well; I am very much in the rhythm. I have been playing a lot of domestic T20 games, so yes I am very positive about it."
    RP Singh, Mumbai's latest recruit

As always Mumbai Indians are star studded, but they must know how to use anyone and on what time. Chennai, though have their own stars as well and it is great to see which team star(s) will shine more brightly. I think Chennai has an upper hand though they have less fire power because of Hussey and some others international stars, but they have a plus point of MS Dhoni as they Captain, who is also a captain of a world champion team (at least for another 3 years, though records guile them), and he can handle better his resources than the newly appointed Mumbai leader.

people like cricbuff forget that IPL started 5 years back and since then we have won the world cup and became no1 in tests... so did u guys praise ipl for that? so why blame it when we start losing? it's nothing to do with ipl...

I would strongly disagree with the statement "Public memory is shorter".. In fact it will be true if we discard a team which performed well abroad for around 10 years have lost in two tours badly and you name that team as worst travelers again? It is the short memory.. If losing can remove the faith on a team, winning has the same rights too.. Please publish..

    • satish619chandar on April 4, 2012, 8:31 GMT

The sad thing with MI picking too many big players is, the upcoming youngsters like Abu Nechim, SK Yadav, Ali Murtaza, Tare, Dhawal Kulkarni will miss out on their chances to play more games.. This is the mistake the MI management have done.. The younger talents in MI will miss out on their chances.. Yes a team owner will look only at the results but a young team can produce good results too.. RR and CSK are godo examples.. Vijay and Ashwin may be IPL stars now.. But they were nowhere when IPL started.. In fact, Raina too was not in picture when IPL started.. MI did produce Rayudu and Tiwary but apart from that, not much..

Mumbai has been getting stronger each year and are now probably equal with Chennai in terms of power. Something has to be done soon, or else IPL will turn into a league like the Major League Baseball League where only either the Red Soxs or the Yankees win (in this case Mumbai or Chennai)

Else, pick Bailey as opener.. MI : Levi, Sachin, Rohit, Rayudu, Dinesh, Franklin/Pollard(Is Pollard in??), Bhajji, Malinga, Munaf, RP, Ojha. Do MI really need 4 foreign players??

    • on April 4, 2012, 6:22 GMT

It was NOT SO IMPRESSIVE opening ceremony.. The days of Modi were better in all fairness.. anyway good luck IPL... The only thing which I noticed was very bad was Mr. Shastri addressing the great AB as "THANK YOU AMITABH".. For a great personality lke AB one should not address him with out Title.. where Mr. Shastri has address both President of BCCI and Chairman of IPL with title. I am sure he must not have done with intentions but still he need to put the record straight by correcting himself somewhere....

@ crikbuff u seem to be amongst those who either supports IPL or hates IPL.brother rejecting IPL is not going to solve India's problem.u must look other way around as it gives achance to some players to earn their livelihood to take care of their families.on the other hand new budding youngsters get a chance to perform on almost an internatinal stage.if its impressive they catch selectors eyes.But.the problem which i have with IPL is ,it is way too lengthy.thus enhances chances of key players getting injured and tired.resulting unavailability of these players to serve India or their semi fit bodies dent India's chances particularly overseas.so IPL shud be short,it shud be 20-25 day tounament

Tendulkar should try himself in the middle order in T20 is what I always feel ... It would give Rohit Sharma who is a T20 specialist more time to bat ... And would strengthen the middle order CSK need to try du Plesis as an opening bat considering that Hussey will be out for a major part of the tourney ... All the 10 can bat considering Bravo is the number 11 bat

May the best team win !!!

@crikbuff : IPL is different kind of cricket.. I think the guys blaming IPL for poor performance are just out of mind.. Just finding excuses.. How can u say playing cricket ruined team's chance? It may be commercial around but still, the players play only cricket and in same way they do in international games or domestic games.. Lets just ignore the commercial factors and enjoy the cricket alone..

    • on April 4, 2012, 3:10 GMT

D-Ascendant: In 100 centuries that Sachin has scored, 54 have come in winning cause, 24 loss and the rest draw... work out the ration yourself... when u blame the little master for something he has not done... the fans tend to get annoyed :/

    • bhrangi on April 4, 2012, 2:49 GMT

@Sakthiivel: because players making enough money and fame in IPL, so they dont want to play test. before IPL player has to perform well for the living and pride but now they earn millions . I worst example is this waste player jadeja bought for 100 million, he is almost settled and wait for next IPL. No players in team bothered for their overseas performance, we fans only worried, so let them worry send a message, if u didn't perform well in international cricket, IPL is flop show and u wont earn.,

@Zeeshan Syed, I can understand how you feel. While even Bangladesh would be reconsidering to visit Pakistan for a series after PCB voted for BCB president to be the ICC president. Pakistan won several matches against England handily and won Asia cup. Yet, has to wait for someone to be kind enough to host a match. All this time India is comfortably flourishing(not by scores obviously as you could tell from the recent past) and players from all countries clamor to come and play in the league matches. It is a sad situation for Pakistan. I do cherish the days of Imran Khan when Pakistan was a super power.

Hilarious line - Ashwin's mixed return from Australia. Ashwin was downright horrible in Australia - not able to bowl either wicket taking deliveries or a run denying line - was one of the major factors that Australia got away with large scores in Sydney and Adelaide matches. If not for Srinivasan/Srikkanth connection would not have played in the last half of the one day series either.

Well, at least Dhoni can't lose 4-0 here. And as we await Tendulkar's 101st "international hundred," remember this: if he scores it today, the Chennai Subramaniams will win.

"If you notice we have done exceedingly well when the pitch has been responsive with good bounce" R Ashwin

Please do not say this in public history speaks. I believe Australian wickets the best bounce on earth without a shadow of doubt. And your performance are very poor and U got good pounding in the Asia cup. It is not about the back up have to get selected it about your ability to perform.

IPL is to Test cricket what a diet of Big Macs & fries are to an Olympic athlete. Followers should approach with caution and realise how they are being manipulated by market forces. What does it mean anyway? It's market-driven and played by mercenaries. True cricket-lovers, wash your hands before leaving!

overdose of cricket is gonna affect television ratings. Be it the big stars playing. but the elegance from them will be missing since T20 is all abt smashing boundries most of the time.
