Deccan look to build on maiden win

Match facts

Sunday, April 29, Mumbai
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

After a demoralising sequence of five straight losses, Deccan Chargers finally got their first win of the season with a strong performance against Pune Warriors. They will take the momentum to Mumbai where they face a battered Mumbai Indians side. They had lost to Mumbai Indians in Visakhapatnam - a game that should have been closed out by Chargers.

Chargers have faced a number of problems. Their batting line-up has been inconsistent, making three 150-plus totals and three sub-140 scores. One reason for that has been the failure of their captain Kumar Sangakkara and Daniel Christian, big name players who should be their pillars. Sangakkara has 83 runs from five games at less than run a ball and Christian has lost his place to Cameron White. That Chargers have posted high totals is largely due to the Shikhar Dhawan's 224 runs in the tournament. While their batting has misfired, their bowling has been unable to defend good totals. Apart from Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra, the others have been taken for easy runs. But in the previous game, Juan Theron replaced Steyn in a surprising move and grabbed two wickets. Another addition to the team was 21-year old Ashish Reddy, who made his debut. Reddy bowled his four overs for 32 and picked up two wickets. He consistently bowled a foot outside the off stump, which helped Sangakkara set his fields.

Mumbai Indians are back at Wankhede and will look to regroup quickly. They have now lost three of their last four games. They tried a new opening batsman in Delhi - their sixth different opening combination in eight matches, but that move didn't work as Aiden Blizzard was out for a duck. They also came to know on Saturday that Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson will not be available this season due to a toe injury. The team needs some good news, and a match against the bottom-placed team at home presents them the opportunity.

Players to watch

If Ambati Rayudu's last two innings are any indication, he will be hard to stop. Rayudu scored a 17-ball 32 against in Mohali and bettered it with a 39-ball 62 against Delhi Daredevils. The Delhi innings kept Mumbai on track for three-quarters of their chase, even after they lost several heavyweights at the top of the order.

Kumar Sangakkara needs to step up after a disappointing run so far. If the burden of defeat was affecting his batting, it would have lifted a bit after the win against Warriors. Against Mumbai Indians, Sangakkara will have to take the lead in tackling Malinga, like Mahela Jayawardene did.

Stats and trivia

  • Dhawan was the leading scorer for Deccan Chargers in IPL 2011 with 400 runs. He is leading the charts again this year.
  • Mishra is the leading spinner in IPL, with 66 wickets.

Quotes

"He's been getting off to starts and playing reasonably well in the last couple of knocks, but he backed himself fully today and showed what he can really do."
Darren Lehmann on Cameron White's Man-of-the-Match performance against Pune

"I have got to lift my performance for myself and the team. I haven't been bowling well, the last two-three matches, I have gone for runs."
Harbhajan Singh has just one wicket in eight matches

Harbajan should be humble enough, and stop being arrogant. I was a Mumbai Indians fan ever since IPL started, but I now cheer for Delhi Daredevils. I cannot stop admiring Malinga's bowling, but I don't like the captain, so I don't want them to win. Be polite, humble, play gentleman cricket, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease....

  • on April 29, 2012, 14:25 GMT

Great decision by Deccan to drop Sanga.. I think RCB should learn from it as well.. Dan is blocking murali..

I was a supporter for Mumbai Indians ever since IPL was started, but I support for Delhi Daredevils. I wish Deccan Chargers will win this game. I don't like to see a bad behaving player captaining Mumbai Indians team, I'm sorry to say so. I admire Lasith Malinga's bowling a lot, Sachin's marvellous batting, but a swollen headed arrogant player, captaining them is so heart breaking... I wish Deccan Chargers will win this game. Somebody please understand that Cricket is not only about talent, but also about behaviour, too. Play gentleman cricket, I will return to Mumbai Indians...

Tendulkar probably knew that Bhajji would lose his place based on performance so he got him captaincy. DC should play Sunny Sohal and Biblap Samantray. DC's bowling is weak so Theron should play but the problem is to making room for him. Ideally Sanga should not play but being a captain his place is safe. That makes Duminy vulnerable.

Cameron White and Shikhar Dhawan are in good form. Harbhajan took only one wicket in all eight matches. MI should be given a chance to Pragyan Ojha. HE is a good bowlers. Franklin should play today's match. Levi shold be given a one more chance He is a good batsman.

while agree that Harbhajan should leave captaincy but in the middle of the tournament same might not be a good idea as tendulkar is reluctant and their is hardly any valid replacement. Rather harbhajan need to step and improve performance and MI needs to work on building future captain

  • vickytheboss on April 29, 2012, 6:06 GMT

Mumbai should Take moses henriques or kane williamson or brendan taylor or kevin o' brien in place of johnson immediately

  • cooldxve on April 29, 2012, 5:53 GMT

DC are just not finding their perfect playing XI. Sanga is a great batsman in Tests and ODIs, but after 7 IPL games it's a quite clear that he is not a T20 material. He should be dropped in this game. DC's squad should be the following: 1. Dhawan, 2. Parthiv(wk), 3. Sohal, 4. White(c), 5. Duminy, 6. Reddy, 7. Ankit, 8. Steyn, 9. Theron, 10. Gony, 11. Mishra.

  • amitksingh on April 29, 2012, 5:41 GMT

Mumbai indian must drop Harbhajan and R P Singh, they are easy pickings for opposition batsman. The main cause for failure of MI is HARBHAJAN, He must resign from captaincy n make others to play. MI batsman are good, they cant help their bowlers continuous failures. Only MALINGA cant do anything. Malinga is the best bowler in the world for t20 but he need support from others too.

  • sachin_vvsfan on April 29, 2012, 5:13 GMT

It is all over for DC and we fans are used to this.Realistically speaking they end up at the bottom 3. But i would like DC to bring down some teams like MI for obvious reasons. Just look at bhajjis comments. Last game against delhi he said the two best teams are competing and now he says he hasn't been bowling well in last 3 matches as if he had won the previous matches himself.

  • on April 29, 2012, 3:59 GMT

I have got to lift my performance for myself and the team. I haven't been bowling well, the last two-three matches, I have gone for runs - Harbajan

Man only last 2 or 3 matches you cannot get your own stats right i think you consecutively failed as a bowler and also as a captain out of 8 points 6 points are by luck and nothing else last season MI look to be the team to beat and this season they are winning by margins Get off from Captaincy Mr.Singh and try to get a place by showing a good spell with Bowl i think you need to life your performance by Playing yourself and not by relying on other players

  • on April 29, 2012, 3:35 GMT

Mumbai Indians need to drop Harbhajan from the playing 11. Even though he is the captain, he is a weak link in the team.

  • Slesh on April 29, 2012, 3:30 GMT

First of all i would like to wish DC for their maiden win. But now virtualy they got to win every match.so they have alot of works to do.today Sanga should take the responsibility of handling malinga. I would like to see Theron playing another game.its not fair to drop him! It wouldn't be bad if duminy sits out for steyn. Bring in Sunny sohal in place of jaggi. Mumbai looking so pathetic this season.if DC can post even 160, i bet they can win! But lot will depend on how they bowl. No matter whether you got 200.u got to bowl well as well as field well! Simple as that.if they do ,they can defend anything.. Good Luck DC!!!
