Chennai Super Kings v Delhi Daredevils, IPL 2012, Chennai May 11, 2012

Delhi wary of cornered Chennai

Match facts

Saturday, May 12, Chennai
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

With Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders comfortably placed at the top of the points table, there's a crowd in the middle vying for the two other knockout places. The last three days have, in fact, seen three different teams at fourth spot. A win for Chennai Super Kings can take them into the top four ahead of another tricky match away to Kolkata.

Super Kings made heavy weather of a relatively simple chase against Rajasthan Royals on Thursday, only to be rescued by Albie Morkel and S Anirudha. In fact their batting has failed to reprise its form of previous seasons and that is reflected quite clearly in the struggles of Suresh Raina. MS Dhoni, who has changed the batting order frequently, has himself been a slow scorer. Their most impactful batsman, Albie Morkel, has faced only 59 deliveries and follows Ravindra Jadeja in the order; his team probably needs to give him more time in the middle.

Daredevils, on the other hand, are in cruise control. On the same day that Super Kings almost fluffed their chase against Royals, Daredevils' David Warner and Naman Ojha made a mockery of a seemingly tall target in Hyderabad. Warner filled Kevin Pietersen's boots by slamming a century in his second game this season and Ojha's class allayed doubts about the quality of Daredevils' Indian batting. Virender Sehwag has had two low scores after five consecutive fifties and he would aim to close the gap with Chris Gayle in the race for the orange cap. He would also want to settle score with Ben Hilfenhaus, who got him three times during the Tests on the tour of Australia.

Players to watch

Albie Morkel hasn't had many chances with the bat but has twice turned a match on its head. He did it first against Royal Challengers and then against Royals. The last time he played against his brother Morne, he faced only three balls. This time, can he disturb Morne's rhythm?

David Warner announced his arrival this season with his second IPL century,109 off 54 balls. With Sehwag also in good form, Super Kings' spinners have a tough task at hand.

Stats and trivia

  • In the previous match between these two sides this season, in Delhi, Super Kings imploded to 110 - their lowest total of 2012.
  • David Warner scored 82 runs in boundaries in his innings against Deccan Chargers, which is the highest this season.
  • Suresh Raina's strike-rate in the IPL before the start of this season was 140.32. This season it has dropped to 127.43.
  • MS Dhoni has hit 59 sixes in his IPL career - but only four this season.

    Quotes

"Leaving it too late is not something we do intentionally, our top six need to perform."
    MS Dhoni

"We are in a good space at the moment. We messed up a little bit in the last game. We must stay at the top and we want to finish in the top place."
    David Warner

@Talha Khan: lol.. CSK is definitely the Man U of IPL :)

  • on May 12, 2012, 7:59 GMT

CSK is making once again mistake but not making badrinath to play in his favorite spot at no 4 or 5 which he was doing till last season of IPL. Even if quick loss of wicket Badri use to give stability at no 4 or 5 so that during later part of the innings other lower order batsman able to fire which is not happening this time. because of that only CSK is not posting big total in these season. CSK should allow badri to play is natural game in the middle. Lot of matches in the past are won by CSK due his sheet anchor role in the middle. SO CSK please refer to your old strategy

  • on May 12, 2012, 7:54 GMT

Go delhi go..... being 4m ranchi many ppl might be surprised dat an nt supportin dhoni...bt d thing iz delhi are playin more jharkhandi player 1 aaron and 2 nadeem apart 4m dis chennai has nt played like defending chapions till d date dhoni is becoming worse day by day don no wot really happend to raina n nothin to say abt vijay oll r in didastrous form...dey don deserve to be der in playoffs.

  • sptamil on May 12, 2012, 7:42 GMT

CSK should open with Anirudha & Vijay with clear mandate go over top for the first 6 over followed by Raina, Hussey, Morkel, Jaddu & Dhoni, clear choice of bowler Ashwin, Hilf, bolinger , Yomakesh. They should go after the bowler for the first six over otherwise forget the playoff.

  • on May 12, 2012, 7:40 GMT

CSK Must go with 2 genuine fast bowlers...One wicket can change the match...Rest one allrounder...go with hilfy & Dougie...Love to watch Vijay batting...When plays it is fantastic to watch...No need for winning IPL 5...Just want to watch Vijay hitting a century again....that is enough for me in this edition of IPL...

Hi guys. Check out my dd X1--sehwag, warner, ojha, mahela, van der merve, russel, pathan, rao, negi, nadeem, aaron. deep batting and 3spiners.wat do do u sey plz comment ok??

  • pai11 on May 12, 2012, 7:23 GMT

@swaran: so in order to satisfy you, what exactly Sehwag needs to do?

  • on May 12, 2012, 6:45 GMT

Like some fans in this forum, Delhi will not think lightly of CSK. Make no mistake.......CSK is a side with very powerful hitters with effortless ease. Yes, Vijay is not in great form. But, as in other game, when he hits, it is powerful and like poetry to watch. Then Du Plessis, Hussey, Raina, Dhoni, Morkel and possibly Anirudda. I feel the problem for CSK is rather their bowling. Ashwin, Hilfenhaus are largely dependable and Jakati in Chennai pitch. If Jadeja goes for runs, CSK in trouble as they will be in a situation where two bowlers get battered.

  • on May 12, 2012, 6:43 GMT

dhoni is a waste,he must create a spot for morkel before him and jadeja, bravo may be the hard hitter in death overs, bravo, hilfenhaus, ashwin shoul bowl 2 overs in each poweplay and morkel in middle overs to dull batsmans and yomi could be used in betwwn overs,if any bolers coss more, jadeja may be replace him and oe thing's is for sure, they can chase 40+ always with less tgan 5 wickets and 4 overs reaming, and until dhoni remains on the crease,he decided to win on last ballmwhich could be easily won 4 overs efore as we saw in case against rr...csk has such a baatting line up that they could esily post 185+ and defend easily, but dhoni created a difference and csk lacked 20 to 30 in each inings du to dhoni

  • veerakannadiga on May 12, 2012, 5:50 GMT

RCB,CSK.DD & KKR this should be the ideal final four. RCB vs DD 1st semis. CSK vs KKR 2nd semis. RcB vs KKR finals. KKR winning & RCB ending as runners up as usual.

  • GSP17 on May 12, 2012, 5:38 GMT

CSK should play Bolinger in place of Bravo.. They need to start with Hilf nd Bolinger in bowling against strong DD batting ...

  • on May 12, 2012, 5:36 GMT

I hope that chennai gets knocked out .. They are becoming like man utd

  • on May 12, 2012, 5:33 GMT

DD is Just a team of two players ..Get them out early..Get 2 pts...

  • chennaiLOCAL on May 12, 2012, 5:29 GMT

Chennai should fix their batting line up. Vijay has proved that he is useless. After the recent performance Anirudda should open with Hussey. Raina comes next. Morkel should be promoted to 4th position. Badri should be included in the middle to provide stability. The line up should be - Hussey, Anirudda, Raina, Morkel, Badri, Dhoni, Bravo, Jadeja, Aswin, Mahesh, Hilfenhaus.

  • swaran on May 12, 2012, 4:58 GMT

Even if Sehwag scores 6 runs per each ball to be bowled by Hilfenhaus, that is still not enough to compensate the damage done by Hilfy on Sehwag's reputation during the Aus-Ind tour

  • arun105Citt on May 12, 2012, 4:55 GMT

Considering the pitch, DD should bring back Merwe in plae of Russell. My XI for DD --> 1)Sehwag,2)Warner,3) Naman,4)Jayawardena,5)Pathan,6)Venugopal rao,7)Merwe,8)Negi,9)Nadeem,10)Morne,11) Umesh. Go Delhi go rock in Chennai as well

  • rasiramesh on May 12, 2012, 4:51 GMT

Chennai Super Kings will be humiliated in next two matches with DD & KKR.

They are going to replicate the same performance from CLT20 2011 in IPL 2012 against these teams.

    CLT20 2011 Match Facts:

    Match 1:

Trinidad & Tobago (123-8) vs Chennai Super Kings (111/6).

    CSK lost by 12 runs.

Man of the Match: Sunil Narine (T&T): 3/8 (4 Overs)

    Match 2:

New South Wales Blues (201/2) vs Chennai Super Kings (155/10).

    CSK lost by 46 runs.

Man of the Match: David Warner (NSW): 135*(69)

The above players who humiliated CSK last year in CLT20 2011 are playing for DD (David Warner) & KKR (Sunil Narine).

So both DD & KKR are going to maul CSK with these players and CSK never gonna make it to play off this season.

Bye, Bye CSK! Better luck Next time!

  • Rally_Windies on May 12, 2012, 4:24 GMT

CSK has a team of players that play better under pressure .... Bravo and Dhoni especially ...

Warner does not do well under pressure, but as an opener he has the most time to settle and play his natural game. He will never be under pressure unless CSK is chasing 180+ .....

  • Samychennai on May 12, 2012, 4:04 GMT

CSK is the team unbeatable if dhoni change his attitude. Dhoni is the one having mindset that he could achieve maximum in last two overs. His attitude cost not only chennai even India also many time. Dhoni has two phase before captain and after captain. Before captain "hit hit hit" all deliveries to out of park. After captain "duck duck duck" protect yourself first then go ahead final two overs and hit couple of sixes make the crowd cheerful. Samy

beware CSK!!!...sehwag surely will go beserk wid his bat aftr 2 failures & obviously another chance for him 2 beat dhonis 11..:D :D....the CSK gang (dhoni, raina, jadeja) is goin down!!!!!

  • AjitNarayan on May 12, 2012, 2:45 GMT

It is important that CSK get their batting order right this time. I hope it's something like this. 1) Hussey/Faf 2) Vijay 3) Raina 4) Bravo 5) Morkel 6) Dhoni 7) Anirudha 8) Jadeja 9) Ash 10) Jakati 11) Hilfy.

  • vioo on May 11, 2012, 23:36 GMT

  • on May 11, 2012, 23:12 GMT

CSK is nothing with their opener FAF, their experienced dugout looks pathetic...dhoni out of form, raina's strike rate is dropping as said in the article, jadeja can only hit one four or one six he didnt play any long innning to prove his price tag, except the one with 47 and 5 wicket haul, i dont know why they play MVijay... concluding CSK only has Albie morkel to cheer nothing else they'll surely get beaten up by DD by some considerable margin..........

  • on May 11, 2012, 21:54 GMT

whats with the fuss about / against nagar.....he hit u 20 runs in the last over against rajasthan . must play 2 spinners in chennai DD XI - sehwag, warner, jaywardene, ojha, pathan, russel, nagar, negi, nadeem, morkel, aaron

  • xylo on May 11, 2012, 21:47 GMT

"He would also want to settle score with Ben Hilfenhaus, who got him three times during the Tests on the tour of Australia" - Seriously? settling scores across formats? And, when you say "On the same day that Super Kings almost fluffed their chase against Royals, Daredevils' David Warner and Naman Ojha made a mockery of a seemingly tall target in Hyderabad", it would help if you could say a few words about the quality of the bowling of the opposition.

  • Ind_Mak on May 11, 2012, 21:23 GMT

No one from the CSK had scored a 50 in this season except the last match miss outs Faf and Badri!! Impact players Dhoni and Raina missing out most hurts Chennai in this ipl so far. Could possibly take a chance by sending Albie @ 3/4, as he hardly faced many deliveries in this IPL. Sure, chennai would be tough to beat if their impact batsman click though they have very average bowling squad. Come on Chennai..Play off's is not very far and unleash the Champion in you. Knock out Delhi today, otherwise you are knocked out of IPL 5 !!

  • on May 11, 2012, 19:47 GMT

    DD 11 : 1> Sehwag 2> Warner 3> Naman Ojha 4> Jayawardena 5> Andre Russell 6> Irfan Pathan 7> Venugopal Rao 8> Nadeem 9> Morne Morkel 10> Umesh Yadav 11> Varun Aaron

I feel V Rao is a better striker than Yogesh Nagar. Rao played well in last IPL. I don't know why he is not being picked in everygame. This is a brilliant batting lineup. Sehwag might opt Ross Taylor again. Before that I hope Russell gets atleast one chance to show his batting skills. Taylor is anyday a better player than Russell but his current form is the concern.

All the best to DD!!! Hope they defeat chennai!!! It will really boost their confidence- beating a strong team like chennai at their homeground!!! To the team management- Please don't play yogesh nagar in the team!!! Bring in either robin bist or puneet bisht in his place!!! I have read somewhere that they are good playes. Infact robin was one of the top scorers in ranji this season!!! Nagar is a weak link in the delhi batting and it could hurt them someday!!! pathan and ojha are doing a fine job!!!! Maybe aaron finch or van der merwe can be given a chance in place of one of the forign players. also since delhi have qualified, they can give a game or two to doug bracewell!!! He bowled well in the only match he played!! The big fella morkel should be given some rest before the playoffs!!!!
