Agarkar: Delhi need batsmen to fire

Big Picture

It's with a touch of irony that Chennai Super Kings find themselves on top of the table before the halfway stage, for the two-time winners and regular finalists are known to be slow starters. Super Kings moved to the top on Saturday, after the then leaders Kings XI Punjab lost their first game and slipped one place below. After they were blitzed by Kings XI in their opening game, Super Kings haven't been stretched. They have persisted with Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Faf du Plessis and Ben Hilfenhaus as their overseas players and have not felt the need to force changes.

Smith and McCullum have provided the starts at the top and set strong platforms on a couple of occasions, easing the pressure on Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni. They are yet to be bowled out and have lost seven wickets or more just once. That their lower order has hardly been tested in six games shows how dominant the batsmen have been.

One of the teams Super Kings vanquished during their winning streak was Delhi Daredevils, their opponents on Monday. Daredevils crashed to 84, chasing 178 in one of the most one-sided games so far. They were undone by brilliant catching by Super Kings and after six games find themselves second from bottom with only two wins. JP Duminy has been their most consistent player but what they need is for Kevin Pietersen to take charge with a big knock. Daredevils' bowling attack isn't the strongest so the batsmen would have to take on the extra load. Their opening game at the Kotla didn't end happily, as Rajasthan Royals chased 153 with ease. The Kotla pitch was a good one to bat on so if Daredevils have the chance to put runs on the board again, they would target a higher score.

Players to watch

Faf du Plessis has a highest of 24 in four innings but his batting has slipped under the radar because the top order has fired. The highlight of his IPL so far has been his two breathtaking catches running backwards against Daredevils. Such fielding uplifts a side and Super Kings may persist with him for the value he adds on the field, with the hope that he will fire with the bat when the opportunity comes.

Dinesh Karthik's IPL performance for Mumbai Indians in 2013 helped him make a comeback to the Indian one-day team but his batting for his old franchise, Delhi Daredevils, hasn't been the same. After his 56 against Kolkata Knight Riders, his next highest is 21 and he had the chance to anchor the innings against Royals after Pietersen departed. He holed out in the deep for a 16-ball 12. He will look to turn the corner, now that the captaincy is off his hands.

Stats and trivia

When the odds are favor of CSK, thats where the problem starts, over-confident playing may cost the defeat. De-kock, KP and JPD were the key players with shami in bowling department may derail CSK. So CSK should handle this match very carefully and should win. Loss may not harm for CSK but in future matches, this winning points may important to say. All the best for both teams.

CSK should beat the DD easily, being a better all round side. Jadeja has found form again & will be the dominant wkt. taker.DD appears to be a disjointed side with very little team chemistry. De Kock, KP & Duminy will have to be at their best to put up a sizeable total to make it a competitive game. CSK batting is too powerful to chase a total of 200 with some what weak DD bowling. So it has to be totally off day for CSK to lose this match.

Question - Why do DD insist on playing S Kartik? Just cause they paid $2mil for him doesn't mean he has to play. Drop him and add another batsmen unless they feel he is one of their best batsmen. De Kock can keep.

CSK is going to win definately, Badri should replace Hilfy...

  • Sam on May 5, 2014, 7:25 GMT

    1. I feel it will be an imprortant match for Jaydev Unadkat to perform. If he fails & DD losses again then DD can bring in Rahul Shukla or Siddharth Kaul to replace him. 2. Where's the replacement of Nathan Coulter Nile ? Cmon DD, pick Imran Tahir !

  • Dummy4 on May 5, 2014, 7:10 GMT

It will require some effort like ABD done last nite to beat CSK. They are in a really really good rythm! :)

Ever since the both openers scored half centuries in their first match for CSK, they have always scored a Fifty in alternative matches. Last match it is Smith so this time McCallum is going to do it. This gives a great opening for CSK since both are really attacking openers and their half century comes less then 40 balls every time. So opening is CSK's biggest strength and their middle order never stretched except the game against RR. Many people have a opinion that CSK has a weak bowling but that's not really true. They are leading wicket taking bowling unit this season and except the KXIP game and change in bowling since then, made them a really strong bowling unit such that they can even benching World No.1 T-20 bowler. They have bowled out 2 teams and even in the last match they had taken 9 wickets in a 17 over match. Watch out CSK bowling as well.

If KP finds his touch It will be difficult to stop him. De cock, vijay and Duminy are also in good form. So don't be complacent CSK. Dhoni and Faf are yet to fire. May be today is their day. If Steyn can go for 24 runs in the death over we can't blame Hilf and others going for runs. So take heart bowlers. Try your best.

If KP fails again tonight and team looses then I think it is time to sit him out and put Taylor in charge...Cant say his field placings have been that great and his batting hasn't been where it should be...maybe his hand is not right.

  • Vivek on May 5, 2014, 4:29 GMT

DD bowling attack is not good in past couple of matches. KP needs to motivate his bowlers and good field set up to bring the best against power hitters Smith, Baz, Raina, Faf and Dhoni.

The only way to DD shine is there batsman's QDK, Vijay, KP, DK and JPD need to fire on top. Otherwise it is an another one side match.
