Big picture

Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab are No.1 and No. 2 in the points table, separated by a slender two-point margin. Kings XI, however, have a game in hand. While most IPL teams have holes in their batting line-up, such concerns barely merit second thought for these two sides. Much of their success in the tournament so far has revolved around the top-order's reliability. Glenn Maxwell is a bank for Kings XI Punjab at No.3, and Dwayne Smith is coming off his fourth half-century in seven matches for Chennai Super Kings.

Both teams had initially found bowling resources scarce, but the depth of their squads offered appropriate remedy. Both MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming have lauded the balance of their side. Ishwar Pandey and Mohit Sharma have ensured their side can field a daunting set of overseas batsmen and have changed perception that spin is Super Kings' strong suit.

Their opposition has been infused with early venom in the form of Sandeep Sharma's accurate and appreciable swing. Against a line-up that has been buoyed by their opening stand - Smith and Brendon McCullum have scored 616 of Super Kings' 1139 runs so far - Sandeep and Mitchell Johnson might well be carrying the match on their shoulders during their first spell. A lack of early inroads contributed to Super Kings amassing 205 in Abu Dhabi, but Maxwell and Miller overhauled the target with an over the spare.

Kings XI are carrying a few straggling batsmen in their ranks. Virender Sehwag played some sparkling cameos but has not blossomed further. George Bailey has looked decidedly nervous, especially when introduced against spin, and is also keeping out a reputed performer in Shaun Marsh. With the season in full swing, it is time Kings XI found assistance for Maxwell and Miller.

Watch out for…

The last time these two teams met Ben Hilfenhaus was relegated to the bench. Since gaining his opportunity, the Australian seamer has given Super Kings excellent balance. Although Cuttack is not the most inviting prospect for an outswing bowler, it is a testament to his performance with the new ball and at the death that the No.1-ranked T20 bowler Samuel Badree is yet to get a game.

Akshar Patel enjoyed a run of four successive matches, conceding well under six an over until he was flayed by Mumbai Indians. Without much variation, aside from the odd one that doesn't spin, his control of flight has surprised batsmen - especially those who go at him too hard, like the audaciously in-form Super Kings' openers.

Stats and trivia

  • This will be the first time Chennai Super Kings will play in Cuttack

Isn't 6.5 crores really expensive for someone to warm bench or is it me thinking poor?

giants are clashing today.big difference in csk is nehra is not there who drop sitter of maxwell .so csk has chance to win this game

Will be interesting to see what Maxwell will do today. He was indeed looking invincible in the UAE leg. In the last few matches he looks mortal. CSK will be looking to get back at Maxwell for what he did to them in the first encounter. Interesting battle ahead.

Good challenge for Smith and Mac coz Sandeep, Mitch, Dhawan are all in good nip and if they fail a huge test for the middle order which has not been challenged enough. Would love to see Max vs Ash and Jaddu today.

all unchanged sides but this punjabs game

  • POSTED BY android_user on | May 7, 2014, 11:01 GMT

Why isnt kings xi playing the likes of mandeep singh, manan vohra & gurkeerat singh in place of pujara & saha.. After these changes kings xi would form a formidable batting order

  • POSTED BY SamWintson92 on | May 7, 2014, 9:50 GMT

    CSK XI: (Unchanged) 1 D Smith 2 McCullum 3 Raina 4 Dhoni (C+WK) 5 Du Plessis 6 Jadeja 7 Manhas 8 Ashwin 9 Hilfenhaus 10 Mohit 11 Ishwar.

    KXIP XI: (Unchanged) 1 Sehwag 2 Pujara 3 Saha (WK) 4 Maxwell 5 Miller 6 Bailey (C) 7 Akshar 8 Johnson 9 R Dhawan 10 Balaji 11 Sandeep.

CSK can bring in Badree for Du Plessis & Aparajith for Ishwar but again I don't think CSK will try out this combination as they are winning & perhaps doesn't want to weaken their batting even a bit to improve their bowling with Badree as cricket is batsman's game.

  • POSTED BY mjrvasu on | May 7, 2014, 9:28 GMT

Instead of wasting FAF, better to get Badree and strengthen CSK's bowling attack, and to counter Mad Max and Killer Miller.

today chennai super king loose the match in kings 11 panjab hand. max has max run getter in this match.

  • POSTED BY on | May 7, 2014, 5:58 GMT

Bringing Badree wasn't an issue for CSK, but as of now they wont disturb the winning squad, instead they should make some corrections where they are weak. Make hilfy to complete his quota in powerplay itself, bring dwayne smith in death overs, thats it. Samuel badree was good bowler but poor fielder, last time he was one of those who dropped catch of maxwell.

  • POSTED BY ssenthil on | May 7, 2014, 5:33 GMT

For CSK, Baba Aparajith and Sam Badree in and I Pandey and Faf out. I believe this is going to be a rank turner and we need as many as spinners and I Pandey who doesn't bowl at death will not be spared by the strong KIXP batsman as I Pandey is not a good swing bowler like Bhuvi or Sandeep who are can swing the ball in both directions. I think it's high time KXIP try Mandeep or Manan in place of Pujara

  • POSTED BY Englandsucks on | May 7, 2014, 5:33 GMT

    CSK should try Samuel badree

  • POSTED BY ramz30380 on | May 7, 2014, 5:15 GMT

CSK will be wanting to go out there and avenge their defeat against the Kings XI in UAE. A good battle of all sorts - factually they are playing at Cuttack which is yet another neutral venue - so both sides have equal chance of winning it! One of those nailbiters maybe?!

  • POSTED BY Englandsucks on | May 7, 2014, 4:27 GMT

    CSK should try Samuel badree

  • POSTED BY Siva_Bala75 on | May 7, 2014, 4:00 GMT

Bring Badree in place of Faf. No other changes. Play an extra bowler- use all options to blunt KXIP batting. Then Dhoni can have plan A, B, C and D. If all fail against Maxwell&Co- so be it.

  • POSTED BY on | May 7, 2014, 3:25 GMT

I think it's worth bringing on Samuel Badree in place of Hilfenhaus. Badree opens the bowling for WI and CSK can use Ashwin and Mohit for the depth overs with Pandey and Badree as the opening duo. Just because CSK is on a winning streak shouldn't stop them from trying to find the most effective 11 and they should try and give Badree some match practice come the more important matches (given CSK make the platoffs which seems more than likely).

Hope today's clash is best in IPL. Both the teams have heavy batting and also proved it so far, Hope lot of fire works from both teams.

Maxi, smith, Miller, Bazz, Shewag, Raina, Baily, Faf, Dhoni. Wow what a batsman's both kings are having and really an hard day for bowlers in both teams.

Clash of the titans.surely this match would be full of intensity, with only lady luck can decide a winner. Csk will look forward to revenge and keep the winning momentum. Whereas kxip would like to return to the orbits. This is one of the toughest fixture for both teams and clearly the battle of the hard hitters.although csk have the upper hand nevertheless one heck of an innis from any kxip will change the hole equation. Also there would be a test of stamina between the captains as both sides has two of the coolest and best in business leader in the side. Weaknesses 1)no certain one,but csk lacks sheer pace attack, an express fast baller while kxip well short of a quality spiner. 2) csk's middle and lower order haven't been tested yet and kxip can't afford their top order to be sluggish any more. Other than that this match has all the ingredients to be one of the best

This is the battle for the top spot & both CSK & KXIP will go all out to win. CSK were lucky in their chase against DD to win with a ball to spare in their last match. Punjab has been riding mainly on the power hitting to win their matches with Maxwell & Miller leading the assault. With their 5-0 record in UAE, the Cuttack pitch will offer them a different sort of challenge. The ball will come slower & less bouncier& batting needs adjustments. In this respect Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja & Ashwin have an advantage over Punjab team which relies heavily on their 4 Aussies. It is power of Aussie batsmen Vs. the spin duo of CSK + It is the pace fury of Johnson vs. aggressive top 4 of CSK. Whilst both the teams have limited bowling, it will be the batting & catching that will decide the issue. Will the lucky Maxwell get 2nd life via "dropped" catches? He had 3 big innings mainly due the catches he offers being dropped. If CSK take the first catch, they stand a good chance of Winning the battle.

  • POSTED BY android_user on | May 6, 2014, 16:28 GMT

if csk don't drop catches of Maxwell they surely win the match. raina dhoni coming good with their openers there is no issue.
