Ahswins is the man with a plan which is bowling over the wicket to maxwell. In the previous two games this did not work beacuse his strike rate was above 200 so why do that. When bowling into someones arc you are looking to get hit out of the park. Good Luck Ahswin and of course KINGS XI have got this game on a lock.

For people blaming Punjab for poor performance in Qualifier one they had external factors which they had no control over poor umpiring has been a feature of this IPL Robbie and Pathan both were plum in front umpires felt otherwise had that been story was different when they come to chase they to score keeping in mind duckworth and play shorts else nine an over over twenty overs could have been planned better all is not lost for punjab if they play to what they are known for csk will be given a run for money. If there is any team which can give csk tough time its kings xi many have said get maxwell out you will game but miller can kill you so can bailey may the best team go punjab

    Super Kings have edge over Normal Kings and purely both are batting paradises. 1. (Shewag+Vora+Maxi+Miller+Saha+Bailey) < (Dwaye+Dupple+McCul+Raina+Dhoni+Huss)... CSK 1 Point 2. Jaddu+Ash > Akshar+RDhawan .. CSK 1 Point 3. Nehra,Pandey,Mohit <= Johnson, Sandeep,Karanveer.. KXI 1 Point

the format should be the team in first postion in the point table should automatically go to final.2nd,3rd and 4th spot teams to fight out for the 2nd finalist.Because just loosing 2 matches after winning most get elimiated looks injustice and the teams lost more matches becoming winners looks bad

I don`t know who stopped KXIP or other IPL teams to buy capped players. What a rubbish talk is going on here. please have some respect to this wonderful team.

  • POSTED BY Asish_Panda123 on | May 30, 2014, 9:40 GMT

Punjab needs to use their strength i.e. batting to blunt CSK..No doubt CSK has been the team to beat in Knock outs but if anyone can do it, its KINGS XI..

A lot depends upon the start given by Sehwag-Vohra..if they can get going its hard to stop MAX,Miller n Bailey who has to come up and bat for atleast 20-30 balls..

My team with batting order- Viru,Vohra,Saha(if early wicket)/Maxwell,Miller,Bailey,Akshar,Dhawan,Jonshon,Karnveeer,Sandeep/Balaji

  • POSTED BY espncricinfomobile on | May 30, 2014, 9:13 GMT

It's simple plan for Csk victory.. If they take Maxi wicket ASAP it's good or forget the game CSK..!

  • POSTED BY CricketMaan on | May 30, 2014, 8:46 GMT

Both teams are BAtting heavy and rely on their bolwers to stop the mahem to a minimum say 190! If Ashwin and Jaddu will be targetted by Max and Miller respectively, Smith and Raina wil come down heavinly on Karnveer and co. Two cool captains, KXIP having beating CSK twice will go in as favourites. On the other hand, they will be under pressure to not let it go! That is where Bailey and Bangar could play a role. Smith does not like it short, so Mitch will target him. I see MSD hand in CSK win, if it does happen! Good luck.

  • POSTED BY vikumsd007 on | May 30, 2014, 8:42 GMT

For people who think CSK don't use uncapped players and waste their talent what were Ashwin,Mohit Sharma,Badrinath and Tyagi before when they joined CSK.CSK don't buy superstars they make superstars as far as KXIP concerned they used uncapped players this season as their capped ones like Balaji,Awana,Pujara,Kartik didn't.By next season Ishwar Pandey is going to become a capped player

  • POSTED BY rajeshmailtocsk on | May 30, 2014, 8:39 GMT

Here one think is clear, no one want CSK into final.I am a CSK fan, but I feel KXIP deserved in the finals and to be a champions. As a CSK fans, we got boared to go into finals 5 times and again we dont want to go ;) We also want to see new chapms. So I wish them good-luck KXIP. The stage is set for you, go and rock.

  • POSTED BY SultanMahmud on | May 30, 2014, 8:13 GMT

We have got one of the best tournaments so far with best three consistent teams in the top 3. And, what a play-off we will have today, a cracker! Being a KKR supporter, somehow, I became a fan of this year KXIP specially fan of 3M (Manan, Max, Miller) :D

As everyone suggesting, I am also convinced that CSK is ahead of KXIP, for their recent form and as they are terribly used to in the play-off format.

But, since we have a logical league format and in that format, superior team always goes in the top with playing superior throughout the tournament as "Cricket_Fan_111" (on May 30, 2014, 6:21 GMT) well described.

So, giving all the respect to the current play-off format, I would like to propose 2 eliminators (3vs4, 2vs3) in the place of 2 qualifiers (1vs2, 2vs3). Because, Best Team in the League deserve to be in the Final at least. :)

  • POSTED BY android_user on | May 30, 2014, 7:49 GMT

KXIP should go to finals...! Best of luck for them and above all in fair playing environment KXIP are way ahead than CSK..!

  • POSTED BY dhoni_sachin_fan on | May 30, 2014, 7:44 GMT

@AndriodMan : That is the weirdest comment that I have heard. How is it not a fair playing XI when they adhere to the 1 uncapped player rule? Why should CSK be penalized because Punjab's uncapped players have outplayed their capped players? It was an open auction, and Punjab spent 650L on Maxwell, and bought players like Pujara and Kartik. Since they failed, Punjab experimented with Sandeep, Karanveer and others, and it worked. Simple as that

  • POSTED BY ladycricfan on | May 30, 2014, 7:32 GMT

One who tops the table in the league has two chances in the play offs to reach the finals. KXIP was unfortunate with the weather, they had to go for shots to keep up with D/l score and had to take risks and lost wickets. Now they have another chance in the Q2 . It is a fair format.

One off blitz from the likes of maxwell, yousuf and Anderson is fine in league matches. I don't like to see that happening in the play offs/finals. Hope to see two thrillers where the whole team contribute to win the matches.

Adding further to my last comment,10 over matches can help schedule more matches on weekends and as a result more people can watch their favorite team's matches.

Test cricket may not survive for another generation says in another 20 years.

Back to today's match would like to see the most consistent team of the league stage to progress to finals. Marsh would be good to add given Johnson has been pretty average.

  • POSTED BY RobbieDiergaardt on | May 30, 2014, 6:50 GMT

CSK,with smith,FaF,raina, dhoni,mcCullum,Sir Jaddu,so much power on that batting line-up,can see no other result but n Chennai victory.. Hopefully Miller,Maxi,Sehwag N Cpt'n Bailey can put in a few more good ones to see it through.......

  • POSTED BY Cricket_Fan_111 on | May 30, 2014, 6:35 GMT

Low scoring matches will not attract more viewers/audience to IPL /T20 matches as it's the 4s ad 6s that attract more n more people to watch this. So, if they want IPLto survive and grow, make Eden Garden pitch better, last yr final Chennai could only get 125 or so...chasing 149...Dubai had god pitches....glad that final this year is in Bangalore where he pitch should not make it boring to watch...

I am hoping to see 10over a team matches on batting wickets in the near future so that there is entertainment and it finishes in less than 2 hrs like other major sporting events

  • POSTED BY Cricket_Fan_111 on | May 30, 2014, 6:21 GMT

Since 2008 team finishing 1st in the league stage did not win the trophy. Not good. No reward for consistency over 1+ months rather performance in1-2 matches makes all the difference. I think they should change it to make it similar to other premier leagues for soccer. Who ever finishes higher in league stage gets the trophy. Just performance on Indian wickets is what KKR and MI did and there they were in the ply-offs and KKR got lucky a Duckworth Lewis helped them put extra pressure on KXIP.

Poor umpiring too..dont know the name of the umpire, he was just not ready to give lbw to KKR batsmen, Uthapa could have been gone 1st ball, Pathan was plumb lbw and then the umpire woke up to rule Maxi lbw.

There should be 3 chances/referrals to get 3rd unmpire to check lbw decisions - just like it wa thre for WC2011.

  • POSTED BY deadite11 on | May 30, 2014, 5:20 GMT

CSK had got everything, they achieved more number of times in IPL. So this is nothing new for CSK, they will play their natural game. Boring to see CSK in every finals. But it will be fair if punjab wins IPL, but if punjab wins today, they will surely struggle with KKR. CSK is the only team to beat anyone, but off field distractions may affect them.

MI was doomed once thay dropped Gopal. Gopal is a wicket taking bowler and wily even if he is expensive. He would have taken crucial wickets and dented CSK. Look at all the matches where Gopal played - MI won!

Any way though I don't have a preference between CSK and Punjab, hope Punjab makes it to final this time, just to see Preity Zinta smile.

Look at these people saying that CSK have a fully capped team. It's not their fault they do. Why couldn't the other franchises do the same? Stop giving excuses because they keep winning. I'm just trying to be fair, because Kings XI will thrash them today. It will be the third time where M&M will dominate the bowlers (esp. Ashwin). He will concede no less than 40 runs today.

Advantage CSK: Big match, CSK thrives on it. Advantage KXIP: They are playing fearless cricket. Sehwag, Vohra, Saha and Maxi- all don't care about losing their wickets. CSK needs to get all these 4 out very quickly otherwise will end up chasing 200+ because in the back end Miller and Bailey will play more steadily and consolidate. Other factors- chasing team will have an advantage. Lastly, if the pitch plays true, KXIP will do well. However if the pitch is spin friendly, then CSK will love it.

  • POSTED BY Chennai_Cricket on | May 30, 2014, 3:39 GMT

CSK don't have any pressure to play this qualify match. Already 2 times champion so they play very freely but Kings XI punjab not even get chance to play in any of the 6 ipl finals, this is the first time they reached this position, so they are very nervous about this match. The iceman MS dhoni will fire today. CSK rocks....

  • POSTED BY AndroidMan on | May 30, 2014, 3:30 GMT

OK TBH i think the previous match was pretty much in hands of punjab they unnecessarily lost 2 important wickets (Saha and Vohra) at the nick of time and that to just because of the pressure built up by this absurd rule of cricket (DL method)if it wouldn't had drizzled in kolkata then the results would have been something else (in short-KKR would have been playing the 2nd Qualifier)well let the bygones be bygones.Since the weather condition is proper in mumbai i'm sure we're gonna witness a serious game of cricket not like what hapenned in kolkata :-|i guess CSK might rise upon punjab bcoz they have a good batting line up as well.. atlast mumbai didn't deserve to play in playoffs i'm glad to see they have been knocked out (Let the poor teams not spoil the game of good teams)feeling pity for rajasthan royals.

Kings XI have already reached the apex of their glory and failure is awaiting them tomorrow.

in 2012 season, DD topped the league table, but lost both qualifiers.... first to KKR, then took a hammering against CSK... And since then, they've been bottom dwellers for 2 seasons. hope the same doesn't happen to kxip after Csk eliminates them. getting to strategy, maxwell has clearly struggled against leg-spin, but I wouldn't tinker with a winning combination.... and knowing MSD,neither would he. so expecting unchanged Csk and for sandeep or shivam sharma to replace Karanveer or Awana.

  • POSTED BY BigINDFan on | May 29, 2014, 19:45 GMT

CSK should drop Ashwin and go with an additional batsman like Manhas or Aparjith. Also drop McCullum and bring Badree in. The bowling line up for CSK should as follows:

overs 1-6 (Nehra, Badree & Pandey); overs 7-12 (Badree, Mohit, D Smith); overs 13-17 (Pandey, Jadeja); overs 18-20 (Mohit, Nehra)

Batting line up Smith, Faf, Raina, Manhas/Aparjith, Hussey, MSD, Jadeja

Ashwin should play the final if CSK make it against KKR in place of Manhas.

Badree, Smith and Mohit at least stand a chance of restricting M&M and Jadeja can go after Bailey. Ashwin will be carted by every single KXI player starting with Sehwag and over or round the wicket will be blasted by M&M. His bowling is mediocre and his batting is not needed.

  • POSTED BY ladycricfan on | May 29, 2014, 18:52 GMT

@Majid Hoosain, Pandey is an uncapped player. Mohit played his first IPL last year as an uncapped player. He has less than one year experience playing for india. Negi and Manhas are uncapped as well. By the way its a free auction, CSK acquired the players they wanted. What is stopping others? KXIP has capped players warming the bench. Pujara, Balaji and Karthik. Nehra is playing for CSK. Why KXIP is ignoring experienced players?

In any tournament involving so many teams, the semi-final onwards is a different ball game. Here too, KXIP being dominant in their previous two encounters Vs CSK will hold very minimal value. There are a lot of similarities b/w the 2 sides - strong batting, good fielding, mediocre bowling. However, CSK may have an edge on the bowling front with Nehra, Mohit & Jaddu bowling decently, of late. Ashwin is a fighter and he will be a different bowler tomorrow. KXIP will need to figure out a plan to contain the CSK batting as all the CSK losses this season is only due to their poor catching and bowling. Batting has been extremely consistent. CSK is expected to play their winning eleven and KXIP will have to make changes. Would like to witness top quality cricket and may the best team WIN!!!!

A Knockout Match is always a different ball-game altogether and for a team that boasts of MS Dhoni at the helm of affairs its only logical to support CSK. Its all about holding your nerves in a crunch encounter like this and it'd be the two captains who'd be key to their team's chances. George Bailey is no match to MS in that context and on the basis of sheer consistency in all the three departments of the game one would have to root for THE SuperKings to come out Victors unless someone from the opposition does a Maxwellesque !!!! #WhistlePoduTimesOnceAgain

  • POSTED BY LAKingsFan on | May 29, 2014, 16:26 GMT

It's the middle overs 7-16. That's where Max and Miller scored a lot of runs. And, KKR showed how to contain them in that part of the game. If CSK can do that they're in for 6th time in the finals.

  • POSTED BY SalilN on | May 29, 2014, 16:13 GMT

Punjab definitely need Shaun Marsh as one of their top batsman to keep stability in the batting. Obviously, Maxwell's poor form is being continuing the last 6 games. If M&M fail again, atleast there should be another M (Marsh) to accelerate the score. They should drop Johnson and Awana instead and bring in Balaji and Sandeep Sharma to strengthen their bowling. Hoping for a good match.....Marsh is in great touch, even though he got Man of the Match award, he was dropped the following game. As a result, Kings XI lost that game due to poor performance by Miller and Maxwell.

  • POSTED BY on | May 29, 2014, 16:03 GMT

This match is going to be a battle of power hitting for sure. Remember the match will be played at Wankhede pitch which may suit Punjab batsman as compared to tricky Edens pitch where KKR spinners did the magic for them.

If the pitch is flat, Kings X1 would go for a kill this time !! Include Marsh n Replace Johnson. Make yourself super strong with invincible batting lineup.

  • POSTED BY on | May 29, 2014, 16:00 GMT

Kings X1 Must include Marsh by replacing Johnson and ready to chase anything or put big total on board. Remind you all, CSK too opted same strategy by playing all 4 Int,l Batsman n go for a kill

Well this season, kp has an upper hand, before that punjap was mauled by chennai every seasons, if still kp is old team, they cant able to defeat. "M" factor is the key, if the "M" factor gets weakened, then game is on CSK's hands. Maxwell hits ashwin over is not a new one. Even if Maxwell bowls, ashwin can answer his bat atleast more than half runs which maxwell got.

  • POSTED BY ladycricfan on | May 29, 2014, 15:31 GMT

Ashwin clean bowled Maxwell attempting a reverse sweep in the t20wc. In ipl Ashwin is yet to contain/dismiss Maxwell. Ashwin, Dhoni and Flemming will be plotting to dismiss Max cheaply. It will be interesting to watch.

Wankede is a neutral ground for both teams. Usually home team have a say in how the pitch should be prepared. Who advises the curator on neutral grounds? Wankede is usually a high scoring ground.

KXIP seems to have lost a bit of steam, while CSK has the momentum. KXIP needs to realise that going after the bowling from ball one doesn't always work. That is their plan A. You need lots of luck to survive. CSK is not going to let them succeed for the third time in a row.

CSK needs to think something different from usual A B C plans since we don't have any bowler to the caliber of naraine. Logic is simple. Block scoring in middle overs. KKR succeeded twice. This is the only difference between KXIP and rest in this IPL.

    All the best CSK.

    Hard Luck KxiP.

Kings XI should bat 2nd and once again relying on M and M has made sure they are a bowler short although the number of wickets doesnt show this. KKR will rather have kings XI then CSK as Maxwell has lost his mojo.

Ashwin vs Maxwell has been on since the t20 world cup. Maxwell 2:1 Ashwin. Their battle will define the outcome of the game.

Kings X1 should play the same the same squad as the last game but drop johnson and awana for marsh and sandeep sharma.........since maxwell is getting out early in the last few matches i think he maxwell should be pushed to open batting with viru so if he gets out they can still balance their batting but if he doesn't get out early then it's carnage........

Kings XI need to realize the pitch conditions. Shaun Marsh is a better player and he is more experienced in these conditions. They definitely need to add him to playing XI as he is more stable, Maxi's average in Indian pitch condition is around 13. I wonder why Bailey took him out of squad when he became Man of Match in the last game. He has been performing consistently well. Also, Sandeep Sharma needs to come in instead of Awana, he is one of the top 5 wicket takers. Poor captaincy by Bailey, I must say.

I think the M&M show is over. First, they used up all their luck too early in the tournament. If fans remember, Maxwell and Miller got plenty of lives (catches that most first class cricketers are expected to take in their sleep) in those big knocks of theirs. Secondly, the bowlers have much better strategy when bowling to them. The spinners are bowling much slower through the air and fighting the ball. Shewag has promised much but didn't deliver. Late comer Vohra made few cameos but nothing of substance to win the match. So, I think CSK will win this one easy. I expect CSK, KKR final.

if CSK restrict KXIP to 180..then it is below par score for them to chase..CSK will do it definitely...its with completely on Ashwin hand not on Maxwell Bat..

    Super Kings have edge over Normal Kings and purely both are batting paradises. 1. (Shewag+Vora+Maxi+Miller+Saha+Bailey) < (Dwaye+Dupple+McCul+Raina+Dhoni+Huss)... CSK 1 Point 2. Jaddu+Ash > Akshar+RDhawan .. CSK 1 Point 3. Nehra,Pandey,Mohit <= Johnson, Sandeep,Karanveer.. KXI 1 Point

the format should be the team in first postion in the point table should automatically go to final.2nd,3rd and 4th spot teams to fight out for the 2nd finalist.Because just loosing 2 matches after winning most get elimiated looks injustice and the teams lost more matches becoming winners looks bad

I don`t know who stopped KXIP or other IPL teams to buy capped players. What a rubbish talk is going on here. please have some respect to this wonderful team.

Agarkar: Maxwell's slump affecting Kings XI

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab have contrasting IPL histories. While Super Kings have made it past the group stage in all seven seasons - and five finals - Kings XI are yet to make a final. Their best showing was reaching the semis in 2008. The difference is stark though Kings XI, with their revamped squad, look formidable.

Kings XI was the one team Super Kings failed to outclass in both attempts in the league stages. They have one more chance to rectify that - in the second playoff. Super Kings' weak link - the bowling - was highlighted in both games as Kings XI posted 200-plus scores. The teams had contrasting fortunes on Wednesday, with Super Kings riding on momentum after brushing aside Mumbai Indians comfortably.

Super Kings could have been chasing in excess of 190, had it not been for the control shown by their bowlers, stifling the batsmen with variations in pace, and careless batting by Mumbai towards the end of their innings. MS Dhoni blamed poor catching as one of the reasons for their sudden three-match blip ahead of the playoffs. They had managed to set that right in their last two games and approach their second knockout game feeling more positive. Batting was never going to be Super Kings' worry. If their bowling can hold it together, Super Kings are likely to be in their sixth final in seven seasons.

Having exhausted a lifeline, Kings XI have their second shot at the final. A listless performance with the bat against Kolkata Knight Riders might have indicated they were running out of steam, but if they weren't compelled to keep an eye on Duckworth-Lewis, the script could have been different. The batsmen were flustered by the threat of a washout and the need to keep up with the par score and yet preserve wickets, but with every passing over, Knight Riders' superior bowling pinned them down. Consistency has been the hallmark of Kings XI's campaign and they have not lost two games in a row. Having come this far, they cannot afford another bad day for it will thwart their first final appearance.

League meetings

In the first meeting, in Abu Dhabi, sixties by Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum powered Super Kings to 205 but the target was cut down to size in spectacular fashion by Kings XI's Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell's switch hits and reverse sweeps stunned Super Kings as he smashed 95 off 43 balls, David Miller made a clinical 54 as Kings XI coasted with an over to spare. It wasn't the last Super Kings saw of Maxwell.

In Cuttack, a "home" game for Kings XI, Maxwell carried on from where he finished, pounding 90 off 38 balls to lift Kings XI to the season highest 231. Super Kings never threatened the target but still managed 187.

Watch out for...

Sixty-four runs off 24 balls at a strike-rate of 266.67 - that's Maxwell v Ashwin in IPL 2014. R Ashwin is yet to dismiss him and as those figures suggest, it has been one-way traffic. Ashwin has compulsively bowled round the wicket to the right-handers and bowling on the pads to create an awkward angle but Maxwell so far has made a mockery of it. But after Super Kings' win over Mumbai on Wednesday, Ashwin had a message for Maxwell on camera. Though the interview had finished, Ashwin alerted the interviewer for a postscript. He said he would bowl over the wicket to Maxwell, as if throwing open a challenge.

Parvinder Awana has had a stop-start IPL campaign and in his five games, has taken a wicket in each except the first qualifier. However, Kings XI's Sandeep Sharma is still among the top five wicket-takers for the season but has been benched in the last few games. With the game in Mumbai, swing could be a factor. Mumbai Indians' Praveen Kumar troubled Dwayne Smith at the Wankhede earlier this month with his swing. That could encourage Sandeep's inclusion, for he is a bowler in the Praveen mould.

Stats and trivia

  • Kings XI and Super Kings have the most successful bowling attacks in this IPL (in terms of wickets taken). Super Kings have taken 85 wickets while Kings XI's have taken 93 wickets. All other teams have taken less than 80 wickets
  • Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith have scored 513 runs while batting together in 12 innings in this IPL (average 42.75) - more than any other pair. David Miller and Glenn Maxwell have only batted together in half the number of innings (6), but have scored 385 runs (average 64.16) - the third highest for any pair.
