India Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who has been out of action since straining his left thigh during the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam, is set to make a first-class return in the Irani Cup. Saha has been named in the Rest of India side that will take on Ranji Trophy champions Gujarat at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai from January 20 to 24.

Cheteshwar Pujara will lead the Rest of India squad, which also includes Saha and Karun Nair among players who featured in India's most recent Test series. There is plenty of first-class experience in the squad, which includes the likes of Abhinav Mukund, Manoj Tiwary, Shardul Thakur, Pankaj Singh and Shahbaz Nadeem, as well as a sprinkling of young players such as the left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav, the wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan and the seamer K Vignesh, who enjoyed a breakthrough season with Tamil Nadu.

The Rest of India squad was the first one picked by the three-man selection committee comprising MSK Prasad, Devang Gandhi and Sarandeep Singh, after Gagan Khoda and Jatin Paranjpe were removed in keeping with the Lodha Commitee's recommendations.

Rest of India squad: Abhinav Mukund (Tamil Nadu), Akhil Herwadkar (Mumbai), Cheteshwar Pujara (Saurashtra, captain), Karun Nair (Karnataka), Manoj Tiwary (Bengal), Wriddhiman Saha (Bengal, wk), Kuldeep Yadav (Uttar Pradesh), Shahbaz Nadeem (Jharkhand), Pankaj Singh (Rajasthan), K Vignesh (Tamil Nadu), Siddarth Kaul (Punjab), Shardul Thakur (Mumbai), Akshay Wakhare (Vidarbha), Ishan Kishan (Jharkhand, wk), Prashant Chopra (Himachal Pradesh).

@VRDBB Panchal will be playing for defending champion side Gujarat

Why is Priyank Panchal not being considered??? He had some stellar performances recently.....

As usual selection is lacking vision and grooming of the players. Some notable and consistent performers have missed the berth. Another surprising thing is that last year squad is selected from the 8 teams that have reached quarter final, but this year selectors have chosen the squad from all times.Last year some players from hyderabad have missed the berths due to this criteria and this time no one got selected despite of reaching semi finals. very strange and unfortunate selection policies. Atleast one out of Ravikiran, siraj and milind should have been selected.

Deepal Hooda and Ankith Bawne are really unlucky. Pankaj Singh is performing only in domestic matches.Chama Milind should have been selected

  • SridharSampath on January 15, 2017, 5:38 GMT

Parvez Rasool, Ishant Jaggi & Vijay Shankar should have been there instead of Tiwari, Pankaj Singh (both highly unlikely to make it to the India squad) and Karun Nair (already in the India squad).

@Sachinrao Irani trophy is not a preparation for playing for India. Rest of India is not India is not India A. Rest of India team is simply the best player available without any other consideration. It is very easy to dilute domestic cricket if we see it only as a stepping stone to team India. There are 30 teams in domestic cricket and a lot of cricketers who have given their life for cricket will never play for India. You don't really expect retire when they think they can't get selected any more. It will not only make their life worse but also adversely affect the domestic scene in India.

Deepak Hooda, Baba Indrajit, Ankit Bawne, Ishank Jaggi, Nitin Saini, Vijay Shankar, Hanuma Vihari, Basant Mohanty, Ishank Jaggi, Yuz Chahal have missed the chance here. Load of rubbish from the selectors.

Horrendous selection. What will the selection of Pankaj Singh and Manoj Tiwary help the Indian team. Bawne, Ishank Jaggi, Rasool, Hooda to name a few who should have been considered. It's early days for Shaw. He still has a long way to go.. Fielding and fitness specifically. I hope Shardul bowls better than what he dished out on the last day of the Ranji final.
