Sri Lanka will be without Lasith Malinga, their designated T20 captain, for the two-match series that culminates their New Zealand tour in January. Dinesh Chandimal, who led Sri Lanka in the format till Malinga took charge in 2014, has been named the stand-in captain.

Opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka and pacer Suranga Lakmal, who are part of the current ODI squad in New Zealand, have been named as replacements ahead of the T20 series that begins in Mount Maunganui on January 7.

Malinga sustained a knee injury during the home series against West Indies in October-November and was initially deemed unavailable only for the five-match ODI series.

Malinga's absence is yet another setback to an inexperienced Sri Lanka team that is already missing the services of Dhammika Prasad and Kusal Perera. While Prasad flew back home before the first Test with a back injury, Perera was suspended by the ICC for failing a dope test.

Sri Lanka lost both Tests on the tour, and are currently 2-0 down in the five-match ODI series.

If SL wants to stop the sudden collapses in the batting lineup they need to include DIMUTH KARUNARATHNA into the odi team. Dimuth,Thirimanne,Chandimal,Mathews makes a solid middle order. If we have those 4 players in the middle order it will be a big confidence for the top order batsmen to play their strokes. We need to go with this 11 for odis; 1.DILSHAN 2.KUSAL 3.DHANUSHKA 4.DIMUTH 5.THIRIMANNE 6.CHANDIMAL 7.MATHEWS 8.SIRIWARDENE; Dilshan,Dhanushka,Siriwardene,Mathews can bowl 20 overs. After retirement of Dilshan we can include UPUL THARANGA or CHAMARA KAPUGEDERA or KITHRUWAN VITHANAGE.

Chandimal should have never relinquished his position to Malinga. Malinga is not captain material. He is history. Chandimal is our future. Mathews is showing that he cannot lead the team without the advise of Mahela and Sanga. I wish Chandimal to replace him sooner than later.

I'm sick of SL fans talking about giving chances to player X, Y, Z..etc. If they were given chances and fail, they will talk about player A,B and C and it goes on until they snatch a victory against some minnow. Typical.

No hope. The results will not change for SL. They cannot win T20 either.

As somebody already said, What happened to Chathuranga De Silva? He was really good in the 2014 Asia cup.

What happen to allrounders like Ashan Priyanjan, Chathuranga De Silva, Jeewan Mendis who looked promising in whatever chances they got, but now missing altogether from the SL camp ??? Like in the past, with this type of part time bowling & of course brilliant fielding SL have won many matches. which also ideally suits SL cricket !! Surprisingly SL selectors are ignoring them & giving chances to players like Thrimanne & rest. Selection blunders like this confuses fans like me. PLZ WAKE UP SELECTION COMMITTE !!!
