Grouping for the ICC World T20 qualifiers

  • Group A: Ireland, Canada, Hong Kong, Italy, Namibia, Uganda, USA and UAE
  • Group B: Afghanistan, Bermuda, Denmark, Netherlands, Nepal, Kenya, Papua New Guinea and Scotland

The World Twenty20 Qualifiers, from which six of the 16 teams will progress to the main tournament in Bangladesh next year, is scheduled to take place between 15 and 30 November in the UAE. Among the teams which are favourites to qualify include Ireland and Afghanistan.

The teams have been divided into two groups, with the top side from each progressing automatically to the World T20 without having to appear in the final of the qualifiers. The second placed team from group A will play the third from group B and vice-versa, the winners of which will continue on to the World T20. The losers will await the winners of similar matches between the fourth and fifth placed teams from both groups to mount a second charge at qualifying. The two winners of these matches will be the fifth and sixth Associate side to join the ten Test nations for the World T20.

"This final qualifier is the last step of a pathway that comprised 11 ICC regional tournaments during 2012 and 2013, this time we will see six teams gain the opportunity to be a part of the global tournament to be held next year." said ICC's global development manager Tim Anderson. This is the third successive time the qualifiers will be hosted in the UAE, with Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi picked to host all the matches.

i dont understand how this group is drawn, is this drawn as a pool system or is it kept by someone who wants to be it like this..anyway i want four teams( Afghan, Nepal, Netherlands and Scotland) from group B to somehow get through to main event...and two from A ( Ireland and UAE)..

)yes this is really very good for associate nation and this time 6 teams will play in world t20 but if icc give afghanistan and irish full status i think this is not bad these two teams now playing best cricket It'd be nice to see somewhere other then UAE get a chance to host these. But I suppose no other associate really has the grounds to facilitate this many teams. I just wish the groups were sorted better, because now I can't see all of Netherlands, Afghanistan, Scotland and Nepal making it. Seems to be seeded to give UAE the best chance of making it, with one ODI team sure to miss out.

Well this is behind us but sometimes looking back at the mistakes or misjudgement we have done as Canadians does help in charting the way forward for the better. We definately have a team that has balance of experience and youth to be a formidable team within the Associate nations in ICC. I am sure of the Canadian coach can take some sort of pointers from the the relevant club coach/mentors for the players thac comrise the Canadain Team. I am sure that this will surely help in getting the team perform to their potetial and eventually better for the Cricket in Canada.

Very impressed that 6 teams will be able to participate in the T20 WC. Afghanistan, Ireland looking favorites to qualify. Would love the financially affected Nepal to somehow get through. But Group B consisting of the Afghans, Dutch and the Scottish men look to be the top draw. Group A seems easier and if USA makes it to the main event next year, it will be a great achievement.

B Group is group of death, but Afgh wont bother about it, because we'll qualify easily.

Group B is perhaps the stronger, but with all of the crossover matches at the end it probably won't matter too much. Ireland and Afghanistan are obviously favourites but after that only really Holland stands out. A lot will depend on spin bowling I guess. Anything could happen here but I'm pretty happy there is going to be 6 teams going through, 16 teams makes for a proper world cup!

The groups do seem to be skewed a bit, with Group B seeming the tougher of the two. Nevertheless, all of these teams are here after considerable hard work and the format of the tournament allows good teams a fair chance of qualifying for the WC.

My guess for the 6 qualifying teams: Afghanistan, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia and Nepal. Canada would be my 7th choice.

I hope Ireland wins the tournament.I also hopes either Nepal or PNG qualifies first time for a major ICC event at senior level. But it will be difficult as 4 nations with ODI status are drawn in their group. It would be bad to see teams which depend on immigrant population such as Canada,UAE,USA qualify for T20 world cup. The perfect draws would have IRE,NED,NAM,KEN,PNG in 1 group and AFG,SCO,UAE,CAN,NEPAL in other group.
