Herath to miss Pakistan ODIs

Rangana Herath will miss the five-match ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE due to personal reasons, Sri Lanka Cricket has said. Herath had remained in Sri Lanka after having been rested for the Twenty20s, but was picked in the one-day squad and had planned to travel to UAE this week. He will now only join the Sri Lanka team ahead of the Test series, which begins on December 31.

Ajantha Mendis, who is currently with the Twenty20 squad, will remain in the UAE as Herath's replacement for the ODIs.

Herath will be the second Sri Lanka player to miss the limited-overs matches for personal reasons, with Mahela Jayawardene also having ruled himself out of the Twenty20s and one-dayers, after having become a father early in the month.

The teams play their first ODI on December 18, in Sharjah. Three Tests are scheduled to follow the one-dayers.

@Sri Lanka young blood , spin is a difficult art in cricket it not judged by one performance that day it was a wet ball and it was tactics error hearth is the best by far only one closing on him is senanayaka all the names you have mentioned would get a serious hammering from good players of spin specially against India and Pakistan hearth is the best against India when all the others get hammered so he is our best hope for 2015 world cup and please study the game before you post.

@Blade-Runner we have more than enough spin ballers.upto next 15 years. but worrying factor is we don't have good face balllers after Mali and Kule. Lakmal inconsistent Eranga Expensive Mahroof,Welagedara inquiry prone. Nuwan Pradeep no where. tool early to forecast Kasun Madusanka,Charith Jayantpathy and Ishan Jayarathne,Vikumkthi Perera

It is a pity that he is the only one SL got! We do not have good spin bowlers too. Thats a fact!

first of all Deepest Sympathies from bottom of my heart. i am not agree the saying he is best ODI spiner in current team. no doubt he is the best Test bowler. but when it's come to ODI's lot of better spinners than him. eg:Sachithra,Sekuge,Dilruwan,ChathurangaDeSilva,MalindaPushpakumara when we consider about last NZ series Lathem,Ronchi hammered him finally Macculm finished with 25 runs from 6 balls. even Replacement is more worse than him.A.Mendis can get wickets only on side who play bad against spinners.eg:SA.but finally they could escape from him. Best Replacement is MalindaPushpakumara or Chathuranga de Silva. and these are allrounders too. because of Dilruwan's age he may be better option. any way luck come to mendis this way also.

big loss for SL. especially since Pakistan are weak against left-arm spin. Mendis is the worse replacement one could imagine.

Very sorry to hear Herath's mum passing away. Now Kumar and Dilshan also need to take some time out for personal reasons. That will leave an inexperienced side to swim on their own in the deep end, which will be good for the youngsters. Give the young guys more responsibility for a short time.

Think its time to give Malinda Pushpakumara a chance for the ODIs He is out best domestic left arm spinner. Deepest condolences to Herath.

Sorry to here. Rangana's mother passed away last week. We missed him for this series but u re the no 1 in the world now. May she attain nibbana!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Malinsom on December 13, 2013, 19:51 GMT

we all know that pakistani players are rather week against left arm spin bowlers. and never forget, Rangana is a world class bowler. That's why he is a important factor for Sri lanka.

  • mensan on December 13, 2013, 14:52 GMT

Big blow to SL, but good news for Pakistan.

  • Blade-Runner on December 13, 2013, 14:32 GMT

Oh boy. This is BAD. Mendis is useless against sub-continental teams like Pakistan. he hardly spins the ball. We're now missing 2 of our best - first Mahela and now Herath. But we understand the reasons for their absence as Mahela is gonna be a dad soon and Herath's mom passed away a few days ago. Best wishes to Mahela and our deepest condolences to Herath.
