News : Gayle ruled out of SLPL
Series/Tournaments: Sri Lanka Premier League
Teams: India | Sri Lanka

The SLPL has unveiled Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), one of India's largest automobile manufacturers, as the title sponsor of the inaugural tournament that begins on Saturday. This announcement ends a run of bad news for the league, including the withdrawal of its biggest draw, Chris Gayle, and other top international players in the past few days.

The addition of one of India's prominent business groups as the title sponsor is further evidence of the appeal of Twenty20 cricket to companies wishing to promote their brand and products. S.P. Shukla, the head of Group Strategy at the Mahindra Group said Sri Lanka is a "strategic market for the Mahindra Group", and that cricket was the best way for the company "to connect and engage with audiences as it is the most followed sport in the sub-continent with a fan base of approximately 1.5 billion fans across India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh alone."

However, the tournament has been hit by the loss of some important names. Gayle has been ruled out due to a serious groin strain. Two other overseas players - Pakistan's Abdur Rehman and West Indies' Fidel Edwards - have also withdrawn from the tournament, while Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan was denied permission to play in the tournament by the Bangladesh Cricket Board last week.

The Uva Next franchise have replaced Gayle and Rehman with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fawad Alam and Jacob Oram. The Uthura Rudras have drafted in Kyle Mills and Australia batsman Rob Quiney to replace Shakib and Edwards.

The seven-team SLPL kicks off on August 11 and will feature a round-robin stage where the teams will play each other once. The top four teams will then go through to the semi-finals. All the games will be split between Colombo and Pallekele. A total of 56 overseas players had initially been signed. But some of those players will only take part if other overseas players became unavailable.

SL cricket needs India support in each and every step

even indians criticize Chinese achievements in Olympics. 81 medals vs 4 medals? 2nd place vs 51st place? give credit where it deserves

I can see the jealous feelings pouring out of the Indian fans comments. You think only u can organize a League?

Posted by   on (August 10, 2012, 13:53 GMT)

SLPL is a domestic tournament...if Lankans people like it,Then it will be superhit..no one cares if global audience watching it or not.Just like BPL,was Massive hit in Bangladesh.

@yorsrilanka..then again send ur team to pakistan,,,

Posted by zapeta on (August 10, 2012, 10:32 GMT)

SLPL will be a failure like BPL... Srilanka cricket board will even sink down.. Srilankans are making scars to look like Tigers (IPL), they will soon realize the after shock pain

Posted by yorkslanka on (August 10, 2012, 9:31 GMT)

@ozone- thanks for your support, you are our cricketing brothers and nothing will change that...

Posted by Aaryabhatta on (August 10, 2012, 8:26 GMT)

all the best wishes to Lankan friends..njoy

Posted by satish619chandar on (August 10, 2012, 6:54 GMT)

@johnathonjosephs : Small correction.. It is not SLPL using the Indian sponsorship but the Indian sponsors are using SLPL to earn money.. But feel happy some youg SL players will earn some money which they couldn't have normally.. BTL for the tournament..

Posted by satish619chandar on (August 10, 2012, 6:46 GMT)

@johnathonjosephs : Never mind.. We are fine with 4 overseas players in IPL and are not going to worry about the fifth guy.. We actually dont need that.. If IPL dies in 4 or 5 years, i see death of T20 leagues.. All the PL's too will die and cricketing world will be back to international cricket..

Do Tamilian play cricket in Sri Lanka??? I did not see any name. Ozone8237: By the way lankans are the first one to visit in your hard time, and you try to shot them in the bus. MMmmm.

Posted by Sinhaya on (August 10, 2012, 0:35 GMT)

@ozone8237, thanks a lot and Sri Lanka are due to visit Pakistan late next year as per the ICC FTP. Doubt if it will be held in Pakistan but will definitely tour UAE by all means.

I think SLPL is a good opportunity for the Sri Lankan youngsters to get an IPL contract, although I'm not sure the IPL franchise owners will follow this 'premier' league..

Without Indian support SL cricket can't survive

Posted by johnathonjosephs on (August 9, 2012, 17:56 GMT)

Come on people, use your heads. The reason why Indian sponsorships are used is because India has 1.2+ BILLION people, which is a HUGE market for any company. They probably offered a lot more money than the companies of the war torn Sri Lanka. Anyways, the IPL needs to take a leaf out of the SLPL and BPL books and make the international players on the team allowed up to 5 or I don't see the the IPL surviving for another 4-5 years.

I GIVE ALL MY GOOD LUCK TO "SLPL". I am from Pakistan but always respect Lankans as they were the first one to Visit Pakistan in our hard times when other nations backed away even the new entrants in the criketing world. Unfortunately one incident on which no one had a control on got everything ruined. Srilanka is a nation of Die hard, passionate cricket Fans and as in all of the sub-continent, SriLankans also deserve to have quality cricket being played at their home ground and the generation of revenues in whatever form of cricket being played should be used to develop the game, upgrade the grounds and the spent on players benefits. Paistan is and will always contribute its full support to SLPL and I believe It will turn out to be a huge success. Good to hear about big sponsors comin in since the T20 leagues are more to do with revenues and business and then who is playing or who is not allowed doesn't matter, But quality players make the competition more attractive.

indian sponsorors have done a great job!

SLPL= IPL2nd division and BPL= IPL 3rd division

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 12:23 GMT)

Why are Sri Lanka relying on Indian companies/investors too much? HA...Even the Sri Lankan players in the photo don't look happy.

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 12:16 GMT)

doesnt SRI-LANKA themselves have any SPONSORS... all the franchises including the title sponsor is INDIAN.. ??!!!

Posted by KingOwl on (August 9, 2012, 12:05 GMT)

ajaygodbole: This is a business venture. So, who plays and who does not is all determined by revenue potential. Players from Ireland, NL, Zim, etc will have no name recognition in SL. So, while from a cricketing point of view, it will be good to have them, as a business venture, it may not be a priority. That is in fact the main reason I do not like these mushrooming T20 leagues.

Posted by ajaygodbole on (August 9, 2012, 10:27 GMT)

why doesn't SLPL look for talented players from Ireland, Netherlands, zimbabwe?

Posted by   on (August 9, 2012, 10:00 GMT)

but no indian players .. so IPL tier 2 not an appropriate 'name'....

Posted by Aziz_Hassan_Sangra on (August 9, 2012, 9:48 GMT)

The absence of said players will not make any difference to the event ... Best Wishes for the SLPL.
