Vettori doubtful for Sri Lanka tour

ESPNcricinfo staff

Daniel Vettori has said that his participation in New Zealand's tour of Sri Lanka in November is in doubt after the recurrence of his Achilles problem during the World Twenty20. Vettori's availability status will be confirmed on Friday after he sees a specialist.

"I think it will be a little bit of a break," Vettori said. "I don't think I'll make the Sri Lanka tour. It's a bit of a chronic injury that flared up during the tournament [World T20]. I'm seeing the specialist tomorrow. I'll have more of an idea about it then."

Vettori had to pull out at the last minute after he experienced soreness in his ankle ahead of New Zealand's last Super Eight match against West Indies. He also had to sit out both Tests during the recent tour of India due to a groin injury.

New Zealand are scheduled to play two Tests, five ODIs and a T20 in Sri Lanka from October 30, and Vettori's absence could come as a blow to the team. However, Vettori said he expects to be back for New Zealand's tour of South Africa that starts with a Twenty20 in Durban on December 21.

Vettori, 33, still hopes to be around till the 2015 World Cup, but said he will have to take the stock of the situation once he recovers from the injury. "I think when injuries come and start to plague you, you have to reassess your goals."

I can never figure out why NZ has some many injuries. Every time you turn the TV on to watch a game the first thing you hear is who is out injured through doing something at practice. The All Blacks have less guys out with injury than the Black Caps and they play more games that have massive contact. NZ cricket has no hope .

@Narbavi, India nicely manipulated the T20 world cup by getting all the games in Colombo and not travel around unlike all other sides which had to travel. Anyway all your high handed tactics failed.

@Narbavi, seeing the original flat track bullies getting booted out of our country is enough reason for us to cheer until the next world cup. So funny that your minnows carried on with their proud tradition of failure in the World T20 since 2007. I mean, did you see how our Lion flags flew everywhere at every Indian wicket to fall against SA?

@ narbavi. very funny Ms narbavi .when ur team win its talent when others win its luck. can u explain hw come ur team was the only team got a practice match @ RPS, played group matches and super 8 @ RPS?????????? wooow that is something beyond luck. u better realize the reason behind that .its sad so called best team in the world cant go to semis after that cunning trick. lot of fans of ind team cant see that side. from that point ur team was the luckiest. wt to do honsety won in the end. nw every body can watch gentlemens games in the rest of the tournament..

Damn!! the series will miss him , its always good to see quality spinners playing in SL against SL ... we've always enjoyed watching visiting Kumbles, Warnies, Harbajans, Saqlains and of course Vettori....

its one of the best things in the game to see quality batsmen against spin vs quality spinners in spin-friendly pitches...
