SLC interim committee to continue

18

DS de Silva, the Sri Lanka Cricket chairman, has said that the sports minister has given him an assurance that the present interim committee will continue, though the minister did not specify for how long. The minister has also appointed a new selection committee, which will be headed by former Sri Lanka captain Duleep Mendis.

"First they appointed me to look after the schools and then they appointed me take over as chairman of the interim committee," de Silva said. "In the past two years I personally think that I have done very good work for Sri Lanka cricket.

"I have taken cricket two steps forward building these three unbelievable World Cup venues (at Pallakele, Hambantota and R Premadasa). Everybody not only the locals even the foreigners and ICC officials have sent a letter stating the three venues are one of the best cricket stadiums in the world. That is something that everyone must appreciate ICC also said that we conducted the World Cup very well."

Mendis had been the head of the selection committee before. In addition to Mendis, the five-member committee will comprise four other former Sri Lanka cricketers Brendon Kuruppu, Don Anurasiri, Ranjith Madurasinghe and Chaminda Mendis, and was finalised by the minister in consultation with Sri Lanka Cricket.

The new selection committee was named after the previous one headed by Aravinda de Silva resigned following Sri Lanka's defeat by India in the World Cup final.

The first task of the new selectors is to pick a captain and the team for the tour of England starting next month. They will also have to pick a Sri Lanka 'A' side also which will be touring England concurrently.

Well it's time for the new era players to take over the reigns. I suggest that some of the current school scene players should be included in the SL squad and groom them for the future. My SL team listing would be - Captain Angelo Mathews in all format of the game with a radical vice captain from the school scene Bhanuka Rajapaksa the make up of the team should be Dilshan, Ramit Rambukwella/Tissara Perera to open, one drop Angelo, Kumar, Mahela, Bhanuka, Upul Tharanga/Dinesh Chandimal, Chathura Peris(very important player for the future), Andri Berenger/Lahiru Thrimanne/Chamara Kapugathera, Randiv, Malinga, Mendis etc. Important to get the young guns exposed to international cricket very early.

Ministry thinks Interim means Permanent. SLC is politicized.

  • stormy16 on April 11, 2011, 5:17 GMT

I am not a great fan of SLC or the merry men who run it but credit due on the stadiums and part SL played int he WC as everything went to plan so well done. My issue is why is there still an 'interim' committee - does the minister not understand that interim means its not permanent which has been the case with this committee. Are we incapable of having a due process to elect office beares to run SLC.

"Lakpj" r u serious chandimal & bhanuka being more talented dan sanga and mahela...u got 2 b kiddin me.... sure they r talented but they r no where near sanga and mahela

  • Lakpj on April 10, 2011, 15:23 GMT

There are even more talented players than sanga and mahela (chandimal, bhanuka, etc..). but they should be given the chance. SL can build a even better team in 2015 if they work to a plan. But need politics out of cricket ASAP.

It is not necessary to plan cricket from one World Cup to next one. Basically there are two formats of cricket, the longer version, which is test cricket and shorter version comprising ODIs and T20s. What we need is either one individual who can lead the team in both versions or two different individuals for each format. 2015 WC is far away. We are not sure who will be around and who will not be there by that time. What is most important is to build up teams in all formats strengthening weak areas such as pace bowling. If we do that systematically even if a new captain takes over close to next WC it will not matter. The captain should have sufficient maturity, experience and most importantly a stable position in the team. It is ridiculous to say because so and so will not be there we will fail in next WC, as due to volume of international cricket played around these days there is ample time for new top quality players to emerge within next 4 years.

Spineless leadership in the country is so blind to the weaknesses in the our cricket - the SLC! They should have replaced the crooked board without accepting the resignation of the cricketers/selectors. They will appoint Dilshan as skipper and Thilan as his deputy in the short term. Mathew has to prove his fitness and mature. He needs to get into the quality of Botham if he wants to be the capt. They both won't be playing in the next WC. It is high time they bring in the youngsters.

@arat Ala , Their wont b any supper 8's in 2015. Their will b 2 semis only. 9 game per each team in 1st round. I think SL still can make 2 da semies, but may not go further from that. There r so may unothoxox bolwers n SL. Murlis, Malings will emerge 4 sure, it needs time. Nuwan Pradeep is already another Malinga v hav. As log as Ramanayaka's there he will turn good softball bowlers into international leather ball bowlers like Malinga. SL player r blessed with natural talent.

This is a sad situation. DS doesn't care Sri Lanka Cricket and We need genuine people to control SLC. It looks like no sport minister has power to control SLC. A strong hidden hand is there.

@Sarat Ala, you are right, as per the latest information, they wont be "Super 8" in next world cup..

"I have", "I have", "I have" - get a grip of yourself DS. It's no secret that SLC is politicised because of you serving as the head

  • on April 10, 2011, 6:41 GMT

looks like...SLC is making a big deal about the loss in the WC Final. This time they have good players and they lost..after 4 years, they will not have most of the start players (Sanga/Jayawardane/Dilshan)..I am pretty sure there is a chance that they will not qualify for Super 8s... with out Sanga/Jayawardene/Dilshan
