SLC Awards 2013 recipients

A rich year in Tests earned Rangana Herath the top prize in Sri Lanka Cricket's annual awards, for the first time in his career. Herath got the nod ahead of last year's Best Cricketer and current ICC cricketer of the Year, Kumar Sangakkara, who took home the People's Player of the Year award for the fourth year running. Sangakkara has also won the ICC's People's Choice award for the last two years. Herath and Sangakkara won the Best Test Bowler and Best Test Batsman awards respectively.

Herath took 46 Test wickets at 22.13 during the period under consideration, and had been the top wicket-taker in the world in 2012. He also became the third Sri Lankan to 200 Tests wickets during the Bangladesh series in March. Sangakkara, meanwhile, hit 441 runs in the only two Tests he played in 2013, including three centuries in four innings.

Tillakaratne Dilshan won the award for Best ODI batsman, while Lasith Malinga was given the nod for Best ODI Bowler. Angelo Mathews was the ODI Allrounder of the Year, with Dinesh Chandimal picking up the Emerging Cricketer of the Year for the second year in a row.

Sri Lanka Women's team captain Shashikala Siriwardene bagged the top award for women in a groundbreaking year for the women's team. She was also awarded ODI Allrounder of the Year, while Deepika Rasangika was Best Women's Batsman in ODIs and Chamani Seneviratna took home the bowling prize. The Sri Lanka women's team had caused the upset of the women's World Cup in February, when they defeated England by one wicket, and went on to place fifth at the tournament.

In domestic cricket, Kaushal Silva, who top scored in the first-class tournament, was SLC's Best Premier League batsman, with top wicket-taker Malinda Pushpakumara nabbing the first-class bowling award. Dilruwan Perera was selected as Best Allrounder, while Sri Lanka players Kusal Perera and Ajantha Mendis also took home domestic cricket honours.

sanga your true champion that whole world vitnessed these many years. am huge fan of you though am from india. the manner & brand of cricket which you play truely remarkable. am sure end of your career after don bradman your test average will be highlighted. i still remember the 200 against pakistan in asian test chmpionship way back in 2001 being young cricketer with the bowling attack likes of wasim waqar shoib razzaq saqlian. it was expected by me after watch that compelete matach. the records which you got now. expecting more and more runs from your bat. blazing cover drive. i have seen some cricketer the in the end of the career they becom3 more dangerous and attacking attitude which i hve seen in sanga from past one year specially in ODI. well done sanga. chandimal if u want to get back to good form means. pls sit and watch your own batting which u did in aussie in vb series. automatically you be in form. i remember sanjay majerekar mentioned one more run machine from asia.

How come the administrators did not win any awards? Surely, they have had some man of the match performances this year with some of their antics?

I am an Indian who has had a keen interest in Sri Lankan cricket for a long time. I love watching them play their fearless, aggressive brand of cricket. I always felt bad when India lost a cricket match but not too bad when it lost to Sri lanka. But seeing the SL team now, Dinesh Chandimal has got the best emerging cricketer for 2 years now. This indicates a serious problem of lack of quality options. I fear for SL cricket after Sanga, Mahela, Dilshan and Herath. All of them are over 35 and have only 1-2 years left. I do not recollect SL winning a cricket match without substantial contributions from the awesome foursome. Hope they unearth some quality cricketers now.

Much as people bash the BCCI, I feel they must be commended for infrastructure and creating good bench strength. I hope the SL cricket board takes a cue from the BCCI. SL has had a proud cricketing tradition and I would hate to see SL cricket fans deserve a strong national team.

I think this is a Spelling mistake by cric info. or SLC 'Best allrounder of the year' A Mathews?... How many matches he won for Sri Lanka by using his all rounding skills in this YEAR?.. None! Well done herath finally recodnize his value to SL cricket but bit disappointing N kulasekara's contributions hasn't yet to identify. Kula or Tisara should grab all rounding performer of the year. I think biggest demotivating factor for some of the key players in this team it's not the pay packet but internal politics & under current hasn't been able to identify true value of the players.

I watched the whole award ceremony. I must say, the comedy pieces were really entertaining especially Sunil perera making fun about the SLC's governing policies and Chaminda Pusswedilla's strategy's on how to win world cup finals. I agree with most of the comments here about chandimal's award of emerging player of the year, I was also surprised. My congrats to all the other winners and of course the ever charismatic Sanga who never lets himself go unnoticed at award ceremonies. @ D-Ascendant ..if I remember correctly the MC's were addressing the ladies as ''Batswoman'' and that's pretty normal to me.

I don't know why slc dicided to give emerging player award to chandimal.my choice is Thirimanne. He has respectively done his job for country recent past.not chandimal.he is a good young cricketer and he should improve lots of skills like thirimanne who built up innings when felt down top order.....Thirimanne is the next people choice like sanga.that's for sure...................

Well done Herath! You definitely deserve to be the Cricketer of the Year! We have won many matches because of you. Specially, the key man in the first test win against SA in SA was none other than you!

Wonder why Kaushalya who made such an impact to bring womens'cricket to the fore has not got her heroics appreciated. Ranil Herath - Kent

As a die-hard SL fan , i m not so convinced with this sort of award ceremonies . Coz Sanga ,Hearth & co don't need awards fro m SLC as they are receiving many respect at world stage . Instead they should pay them without hiccups and avoid any disrespect to these seniors . These awards should be given to emerging players and motivate them . that will help us to stablish a young team for future . better to have three emerging squads with players getting promoted and relegated based on performances . Emerging team A should be the path to national team .

Congratulations to Sanga. You Deserve this. But I wish you should get it in World level also. Most of Indian cricket fans respects you after Dravid. I still remember your speech which guides more young crickets how they should live as a good sportsman. Hats Off to you. All the Best for Many More Laurels in your cricket and personal life.

Best Batsman: Kaushal Silva (SSC) = any opportunities for the guy to play international Cricket or he is good only in Sri Lanka....I am getting old...he had a good "A" team tour to Caribbean this year!!!

It was indeed exciting to see players who have performed well during 2013 been rewarded with recognition. Unfortunately Mahela was the odd man out. It was also good to see Umpires and Media personell been recognized for their contribution to the game. Hopefully these annual awards will continue for a long period of time instead of been an one off affair. It is also opportune to introduce a Hall of Fame at the Sri Lanka Cricket Hqrs to honour cricketers who have contributed to keep the game alive to date.

oh come on. you've got to be kidding. Malinga best ODI bowler?? Doesnt Nuwan Kulasekara come to mind?

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 10:52 GMT)

Well done sanga its always you for the take......but dissapiontment with the other awards .....................

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 9:07 GMT)

Chandimal is still emerging? Sigh... But congrats Sanga, Herath and Dilshan. Great performances.

Posted by satzzz on (September 11, 2013, 8:59 GMT)

Hearty Congrats Sangakkara and Herath. I would also like to congratulate Dilshan and Slinga Malinga. All these 4 thoroughly deserve it. But i seriously can't understand Mathews and Chandimal getting their share of awards. The all rounder should be Dilshan, he performed way better than Mathews. Mathews has had one of the horrible years as an all rounder. I tried my best but i am not able to figure out the logistics on how Chandimal was given Emerging player award twice. Last year he may be an emerging player but how come a player could still stay in the 'emerging' tag for 2 years running, albeit he is national T20 team's captain. And for sure he didn't deserve this award as he didn't perform much in any of the critical situations. Its really a worrying sign for SLC that the team is still dependent on the seniors who may play for another year or two. Its time that SLC start thinking to enrich the domestic infrastructure and A teams tournaments rather than just creating moral fights.

How can Chandimal get again emerging cricketer of the year, it's should go to thirimanne.

Posted by sachinisawesome on (September 11, 2013, 7:41 GMT)

@ Sandip Manjrekar Completely agree with you. They should really remove their blind fold and see what's going on. Giving emerging player to Chandimal has actually made him a laughing stock. He has not done anything yet. He is the captain of the T20 team and his average is 13 and SR is 94. How can he inspire confidence in his team when he himself is abysmal at T20s. Awards should be given as per the performances not just for the sake of it. Really God bless Sri Lankan Cricket coz in 2 odd years I see them becoming easy fodder for rest of the teams.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 7:01 GMT)

Chandimal gets the emerging cricketer in two years. This can't happen. Once he got the award he is not an emerging player. Thirimanne or Kushal should get it

Posted by Sachit1979 on (September 11, 2013, 6:58 GMT)

Rangana Herath is like Andre Agassi of Cricket. More he is aging, more he is shining.

Posted by kevepere on (September 11, 2013, 6:39 GMT)

Best all rounder should be dilshan .. not mathews.. he couldnt perform well . even thisara perera did well

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 6:21 GMT)

So, no use of the veteran Mahela ?

Posted by Udendra on (September 11, 2013, 5:41 GMT)

Chandimal must be hoping to be the emerging player for next year too.

Posted by PadMarley on (September 11, 2013, 5:20 GMT)

Congratulations to everyone!! Hmmm but what was significant from Chandimal to get that award? My gut feel says contributions in critical moments came from Thrimanne and even Thisara were more deserved. Perhaps its the two centuries Chandimal scored against Bangladesh.

SLC proved that its cricket starts with Herath, Sanga, Mahela & Dilshan which ends with the same seniors. BCCI believes in strategies, better PLANNING and their executions. They have been working in every category whether it's U19, U23, A team, Domestic cricket infrastructures, Indian & International (Champion) Leagues and many. They announced various squads yesterday for incoming WI A Tour and proved once again about their moderate vision. Yet they have been targeted in every forum mostly by SL fans. On the other hand SLC hardly conducted any TEST. moreover they converted scheduled Test series into ODIs & T20s series with concluded SA's visit to them. They focussed on SLPL which was derailed in it's second year. The Juniors are hardly seen on international circuits which is most worrying point at this hour and SLC should concentrate on them.

Many Congratulations to you Rangana! It has been a fabulous year for you and Sri Lanka Cricket despite the ill-treatments the cricketers received from SLC. You have proved that you are the premier bowler in Sri Lanka and the best spinner in the world. Congratulations to the legendary Sanga! Well done Sir! Time-and-again you have proved that you are the best in the world. One word on the other awards: Chandimal doesn't deserved to be the "Emerging Player" of the year. He didn't do anything worth mentioning. It should have been given to Thirimanne for his couple of sterling performances.

Posted by Sulaimaan91 on (September 11, 2013, 4:33 GMT)

Chandimal as emerging cricketer is a joke and even for Mathews there were more deserving players like Dilshan,Kula for the best all rounder award.Might have been a selection to just give the captain and vice captain(emerging cricketer-lol) some recognition at the awards.Shaminda Eranga deserved the award ahead of Chandima and the whole awards ceremony was so ugly.

Posted by   on (September 11, 2013, 4:21 GMT)

Nothing for Kaushalya Lokusuriya who helped to beat England in the women's world cup, at least emerging women's cricketer of the year

Posted by D-Ascendant on (September 11, 2013, 4:13 GMT)

In respect of the women, can't they at least change "batsman" to "batter"? Women's Batsman seems mighty odd!
