Teams: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have announced a tried-and-tested squad for next month's World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. The only selection resembling something of a surprise was the inclusion of batting allrounder Chaturanga de Silva as a standby in case Rangana Herath doesn't recover in time for the tournament.

Chaturanga also features in Sri Lanka's Asia Cup squad, though as a confirmed member and not a back-up. The 15-man squad for the 50-over Asia Cup had only one change from the World Twenty20 side, batsman Ashan Priyanjan taking the place of spinner Seekkuge Prasanna. Mahela Jayawardene, who picked up a finger injury last week was selected in both squads.

Sri Lanka would have had an extended taste of Bangladesh conditions before the World Twenty20, arriving in the country in late January for a full series. They won the Test series 1-0, the Twenty20s 2-0 (both victories came off the last ball) and are currently playing the first of three ODIs. The Asia Cup, also in Bangladesh, starts later this month and leads up to the warm-up matches for the World Twenty20.

Chaturanga, 24, plays for Moors Sports Club, and has been part of Sri Lanka's A team over the past year. He has put in consistent performances in the ongoing home series against England Lions. He had previously been picked in the national squad for an ODI against South Africa last year.

World Twenty20 squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lasith Malinga (vice-capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Mahela Jayawardena, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Rangana Herath / Chaturanga De Silva, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Seekuge Prasanna

Asia Cup squad: Angelo Mathews (capt), Dinesh Chandimal (vice- capt), Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Mahela Jayawardena, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Chaturanga De Silva, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Ashan Priyanjan

right, all the critics, less confidence. This is ideal situation for a fighter like Dinesh Chandimal. Now he can show his skills and rewrite the cricket history like Iker Casillas did it for spain in soccer

Well for those who wanting a selection match before selecting this is the last time sri lanka had a domestic T20 competition with all International players.;type=tournament

Posted by   on (February 21, 2014, 2:03 GMT)

Where is Akila Dhananjaya , who had average of 13.58 and econ of 6.58 in last T20 world cup... ....? Mean time though Chandimal is the captain he should be rested for couple of series till he recovers him self..

Posted by   on (February 20, 2014, 17:26 GMT)

why everyone blaming tirimanne?? he played well in tough times.. he should play in Asia cup not low down the order. in the middle. he can do what ashan did today.. but better than ashan's SR I'm sure..

Posted by   on (February 19, 2014, 7:53 GMT)

Senior players like sangakkara , dlishan , jayawardene no need for them to play all the three formats blocking the youngsters. They all gonna retire in a same period between one or two years. Then what will happen?? Team will struggle. Better give chance to youngsters and so they can be groomed in the future. Old guards must retire from t20s. No point of playing

Posted by sujeemuller on (February 19, 2014, 6:34 GMT)

Little disappointed over Sri Lankan team selection.. specially for T20 s as a captains Sri Lankan captain strike rate less than 100 in all format.. why he in the first place selected as a captain.. He is a good player in test and ODI so still not late and wish cricket board will open thire eyes sooner.. so please don't block all other talented players also chances to prove what they capable for.. good luck for Sri lanka

PCB has requested for series in Australia and NA before the 2015 WC. While PCB was struggling with internal strife India will be touring England this summer and Australia next winter before the 2015WC. Sri-Lanka is also set to play India, Astralia and England with 60 million dollars revenuw guranteed. Bangladesh, NewZeland and WI have been promised series by India, England and Australia. SA has settled its dispute with India and its chief will be visiting India to discuss bilateral series. So that leaves Pakistan with only one series against Australia [ already cut short] in 2014 plus the ICC events like t-20, ODI and CT till 2023. Pakistan at the moment is isolated and let's see what Najm Sethi can do to get some cricket series for Pakistan in the near future.

would like to see Kusal Silva in the squad n akila return

Posted by jerryman on (February 18, 2014, 14:56 GMT)

for the Asia cup squad would have been better to drop Chandimal and give Kaushal Silva a go and hoping Thirimanne is not in the starting eleven .thiris place should have gone to Vithanage it is good to see Chaturanga added to the squad .Tharindua kaushal the other spinner should also be on the radar as he is very good too.

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 14:26 GMT)

If really look at it. Upul Tharanga should be in the squad instead chandimal

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 8:11 GMT)

why no select kapu for atleast t20 he is a magnificent player.same time big hiter pls give him a chance toporder option.all the time he batted down the order.try him one more time he will do best for srilanka.

Posted by SriLankanYoungBlood on (February 18, 2014, 7:49 GMT)

If it's better this squad select after 2-3 practice matches dividing 30 squad to 2. SL -A and SL-President. From that we could select best performing players. In this team Dilshan 2 matches 3 runs out of form. Sanga with some runs but SR is not upto T20.just below 100. Thri and Chandi not T20 players. Mathews not shown much in either batting or bowling in recent T20's. So if some small tournament going on, these players might prove their suitability and some good but underrated T20 player like Kithruwan,Dilruwan,MilindaSiriwardana,Akila Dhanjaya could prove their skills. Also Anglo Perera and Ramith Rabumwella. Players like Dilshan purely in this squad based on history performances. It's totally unfair.these seniors should prove their talents with competing youngsters. I told earlier this team is hardly come to Semis so i don't repeat it again.

Widura89 Kapugedera? You got to be kidding!!!

Posted by Hasi21 on (February 18, 2014, 6:48 GMT)

U cant put everyone in this squad. this is really good squad, bt angello Perera should in for Thirimanne. Kusal,Dilshan,Mahela,Sanga,Chanimal,Mathews,Thisara,Kulasekara,Senanayake,Malinga,Mendis should be playing XI

Posted by Widura89 on (February 18, 2014, 5:50 GMT)

Where is Akila Dananjaya and Tharindu Kaushal ????????We don't have any surprising package in spin department.Thirimanne is not a T20 player.Very pathetic selection. He is an outstanding test and odi player.I think kapugedara should get the chance , not the thirimanne.

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 5:11 GMT)

chandimal is a very talented player.... though he is out of form.... so he must perform well in this ac the skipper..... this time its for loinz world #1 t20 team.....

Posted by rshan on (February 18, 2014, 4:52 GMT)

Selectors need to look closely at Chandimal since he's a mere passenger in the team at this moment of time. Failure after failure. Selection should be considered from current form and NOT the past. Like Thisara had to undergo training with the coaches, Chandimal too should be asked to follow-suit. Malinga is not leadership material. If Chandimal is unable to take the field, who would lead SL??? This is the world cup and not any other tournament. Selectors WAKE UP!!!

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 4:43 GMT)

Kithruwan must play with England lions on grassy pitches to prove his class for the England tour. Kuashal Silva must be only for tests. All the failed SL players must be ignored for the England tour. Vishwa Fernando must be totally ignored as he could not take a wicket against England lions. Isuru Udana should be included against England lions probably with Jehan Mubarak and Dilhara Lokuhettige.

Posted by YsaKaru on (February 18, 2014, 3:56 GMT)

good to see thirimanne back in to the side after recovery his injury and 100+ FC T20 s he is better player than chandimal.

Posted by ajithabey on (February 18, 2014, 3:55 GMT)

I would have preferred to see Vithanage instead of thirimanne who probably does not have enough match practice going into two major tournaments. Kaushal Silva too should have been considered to bring solidity to the opening position as Dilshan's current form does not justify his selection.

Posted by Udendra on (February 18, 2014, 3:38 GMT)

agree with some. Chandimal & Lahiru are the weak links in the T20 squad.

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 3:23 GMT)

All the failures in Bangaladesh must be ignored for the England tour.

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 2:55 GMT)

wat happen to the dilshan munaweera?

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 2:33 GMT)

All the negative talk about Chandimal as a T20 player and let alone being the captain of the national T20 side should rest a lttlel. But as a player hes ready for T20, Captaincy is only making him aggressive. His batting is paying the price because of his aggressiveness. He is a better Captain than Matthews, Im saying this because I see Mahela's captaincy techniques in him, While Matthews is Sanga's Xerox Copy. Defense, look where defense get you in cricket, Ask MS Dhoni and the Indians. Or just check NZ vs IND scorecard. Big Tournament, Heavy Shoes, let's see if Chandi can really deliver the goods. Their is no point in pointing fingers. He is what he is, the "captain" ; lets all get behind him and cheer him on and pray for success. As for Thirimanna, he want play because the 11 is full and their is no place for him. In 2012 WT20 he was picked ahead of Chandi, but now he is 2nd to him. Hence just their to warm the bench. So chill my dear Lankans.

Posted by Big_Brother_of_Cricket on (February 18, 2014, 2:30 GMT)

Good team selection considering the lack of resources SL has in their bowling department. Seekuge Prasanna and Chathuranga de silva are really god selections. Prasanna's heroics of big hitting with the bat and his leggies will be handy in Bangladesh conditions. My worry is the captaincy material specially Chandimal's poor performance. Chandimal has been a evident failure in T20 set up. I suspect he'll cost SL this world cup, but since selectors didn't make the right call earlier, now they are not in a position to make big changes going into a world cup. Would have been better if they had only one from Thiri/Chandimal and include a hard-hitting batter such as Angelo Perera.

Posted by dragster21 on (February 18, 2014, 2:10 GMT)

Only SL keep a poorly performing player in the team for over an year just because he is captain of one of the formats. An Absolute and UTTER JOKE hence reflects why we are still sitting in the middle of the ODI and test rankings instead of featuring in the top part of the ICC rankings. Chandimal should step down by himself from captaincy and prove that he's got what it takes to hold a place in the team first. What ever happen to Jeevan mendis he has played many short and useful cameos for us in the past. These are the kind of players (who can play dual roles and atleast excell in one role on a selected day) we need if we are going to compete for the T20 cup.

Posted by   on (February 18, 2014, 1:39 GMT)

only surprise is what the captain chandimal doing in the team....???

Posted by InternationalCricketFollower on (February 18, 2014, 0:41 GMT)

@Mee Lainge: I Agree. He needs to be dropped so he can get his form sorted.

Also, Kaushal Silva needs to be picked for the one dayers. Lanka needs stability in the batting order! He should be part of the WC plans for next year!

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 23:29 GMT)

Chandimal is captain again!!! He shouldn't even be in the team. Same applies to Thirimanne. Selectors are insane.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 19:04 GMT)

Chandimal weakens Srilanka's chance of winning the T20 WC, obviously not suited to that format. Good odds of winning without Chandimal.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 18:54 GMT)

hope herath wil recover we need him.

Posted by Dambulla on (February 17, 2014, 18:32 GMT)

Kaushal Silva should be named at least 50-ODI game as he had better test series with Pak/ Banga teams. In addition to that SL premier ODI tounerment too he scored heavily, Also, he is a good stroke player and Hope in future Sanath will think about him too

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 18:19 GMT)

Chathuranga de Silva is a good selection, but Thirimanna can consider him self very very lucky to be selected ahead of Kithruwan. Vithanahe

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 17:52 GMT)

out of form chandimal and injured Thirimanna included and selectors favoured them badly. if other players perform like this way, what will happen to them. time has come to change selectors. still they show their political power.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 17:36 GMT)

happy to see thirimanne back... unfortunately he missed test and odi's against Bangladesh.. welcome back my favorite youngster

Posted by Rizwanodayar on (February 17, 2014, 17:23 GMT)

People who criticized Chandimal should remember he came to limelight as T20 tournament with hes explosive properly timed shorts. Later on he curved and some of his high risk shorts and played some fantastic inning in English and Australian conditions. At present he seem to be facing a deli-ma between his natural aggression and controlling it ending up in no mans land. If we let him along without criticizing too much he will have definite way of playing will deliver soon. I wold more warring of inclusion of Thirimanna in T 20 team ware in the middle he tend slowdown and that is huge disadvantage to the team. Also Dilshan seemed to out of touch and try to match Kusal short making. He should take cure from the past ihow Jayasooriya and Kaluwitharana bantered 1996 world cup.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 17:19 GMT)

almost same team year ago was selected and everybody told we not gonna made out of pool stage! but we was runners up and these same players hold number 1 rank 4 2 yrs now! kusal, mahela, sanga, chandi, chathuranga, mathews, sikku, thisara, sachi, kula, mali 3 spinners 4 fast bowlers 10 batsmans

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 17:15 GMT)

good team but thirimanne?? NOO! and hope herath will not recoveer and we can play with chathuranga! he is fantastic

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 17:01 GMT)

Thirimanne again...with Chandimal already the captain...this is hilarious stuff from SL selectors.. Chathuranga is a good addition and Dili's form is a concern. . Team will be...Kushal, Dili,Chandi,Sanga,Mahela,Mathewes,Thisara,Chathuranga,Kula,Sachi,Mali,Mendis

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 16:16 GMT)

i think chandimal is the worst T20 batsmen ,feel sorry for SL team.instead of chandimal, thirimanna we should have selected mahroof,lokuhettige....worst selection commitee ever

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 16:02 GMT)

but u should know Mahila , sangkara dilshan are big names so u cannot ignore him

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 15:59 GMT)

no ipl contracts, no bollywood style superstars, but this team has remained no 1 in this format for 2 years, a smiling sri Lankan outfit is always a deadly one, watch out for these guys in the world cup

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 15:48 GMT)

Chandimal will be history after world cup

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 15:38 GMT)

Chandimal AGAIN?????????????????????????????????????????

Posted by Lakpj on (February 17, 2014, 15:35 GMT)

It seems that many are predicting an early exit for SL. But they should keep in mind that this is more or less the team that had kept SL at the No1 ranking for nearly 2 years. It is true that they don't have any big T20 super stars like AB, Gayle, Watson or UV but they play as a team and that is how they win.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 15:11 GMT)

If Australia Pakistan SouthAfrica are having different T20 captains than they are those who are performing awesomely in T20 format i.e. Hafeez Bailey Du plees Idea of having a diff t20 captain than Mathews is going bizare.Mathews should take over T20 captaincy and chandimal should b dropped along side dilshan and mahela and new performing players should be added sanga should continue till the time he is doing well

Posted by Smadu on (February 17, 2014, 14:34 GMT)

Oh..C'mon ,Tirimanna again...,Chandi and Thiri not adjusted yet for t20 format. I don't know why selectors can't see this reality.Selectors going to ruin these talented young players Test/ODI careers by selecting them for t20 s.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 13:19 GMT)

Led by Chandimal with figures of 19 innings averaging 13.36 at a strike rate of 92.3. I think selectors are hoping for some miracles to happen with a player like this leading a side to a world cup. Yes there is talent in him may be for tests and ODIs. There are better T20 specialists in the line up that deserve a permanent position in the team than him. Bowling all rounders perform better with the bat than him in T20s. :/

Posted by davidbro108 on (February 17, 2014, 13:10 GMT)

I think,this team out from pool stage. . . .its nt a heavy team. . .like SA,AUS,IND

Posted by wapuser on (February 17, 2014, 13:08 GMT)

Sri lanka must need chandimal for t20 world cup. Bcos team need a captain. Is there any team playing without a captain. How can sri lankan team play the t20 world cup without the captain. even these days chandimal is start practicing how to win the toss.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 12:41 GMT)

where is AKILA DHANANJAYA..... he played well in last T20 World cup and never saw him after tht......

Posted by satzzz on (February 17, 2014, 12:36 GMT)

What is the role of Dinesh Chandimal in T20 side other than just captaincy? IMO, he is an over rated player and definitely over rated for T20s.

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 12:10 GMT)

i dont see this team making it out of the pool stage

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 11:54 GMT)

upul tharanga..! a consistant batsman.. lol you must be kidding my friend

Posted by   on (February 17, 2014, 11:33 GMT)
