†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1983-84

At Perth, February 5

15-Apr-1985
At Perth, February 5. Australia won by 14 runs. Before a record crowd for a limited-overs match in Perth, Australia gained their only win of the qualifying series over West Indies. The game also signalled a fine return to the Australian team by Alderman, who had sustained a severe dislocation of the right shoulder during an altercation with a spectator in the first Test against England on the same ground in November, 1982. Australia owed their reasonable but not unassailable score to a third-wicket stand of 119 between Wessels and the explosive Hughes. Alderman and Lawson made West Indies struggle early on, and Australia looked poised for a comfortable win when West Indies slumped to 102 for seven. But Holding struck out mightily for a rapid 64 from 38 balls with two 6s and eleven 4s, sharing a partnership of 54 with Lloyd before Australia went on to win an entertaining game.
