Commonwealth Bank Series, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the first match, Australia v India, Commonwealth Bank Series, 2011-12

15-Apr-2013
At Melbourne, February 5, 2012 (day/night). Australia won by 65 runs (D/L). Australia 5pts. Toss: India. One-day international debuts: D. T. Christian, M. S. Wade.
Two days after outfielding Australia to share the Twenty20 series, India regressed. They started well, confining the hosts to 35 for two from 11 overs, before a three-hour downpour cut the match to 32 overs each. Having taken 90 balls to reach 50, Australia made the next 100 in only 62, primarily due to Matthew Wade and the Hussey brothers. Wade's performance on debut added intrigue to the selectors' stated plan to reinstate wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, supposedly rested, later in the series.
David Hussey justified his recall with an electric unbeaten 61 from 30 deliveries, but was helped by India's reliance on spin in unfriendly conditions: the adjustment meant the seamers had already bowled most of their reduced allocation before the interruption. Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma sent down two balls of his seventh over, the last of the innings, before the umpires realised only two bowlers were now allowed more than six; Jadeja completed it, but went for 17. Ponting's two catches at backward point, diving forward to dismiss Tendulkar and grasping a rocket from Kohli, were pivotal.
Man of the Match: M. S. Wade.
Attendance: 29,959.
