Michael Di Venuto is to replace Dominic Cork as Derbyshire's captain for next season, it was announced today. The appointment is the first made by Dave Houghton, the former Zimbabwean batsman who is Derbyshire's new director of cricket.
Di Venuto, 29, said: "I am delighted and honoured to be given the opportunity to captain Derbyshire and the start of next season can't come around quickly enough for me. I believe we have some good young prospects at Derby, and with a couple of sensible additions I'm sure that we can help them to develop into first-class cricketers, and bring success to the County Ground."
Di Venuto, who has played nine one-day internationals for Australia, topped Derbyshire's run-chart this season with 1520. Houghton also announced that Luke Sutton will be vice-captain.
Houghton added: "It is clear that Michael is extremely well respected by all at the County Ground, and both he and Luke have excellent cricket brains. Both are committed to the team ethic, and together we will hope to provide an atmosphere of enjoyment, hard work and success."
Meanwhile, Cork is expected to confirm his departure from the club in the next two days. Hampshire, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire have all reportedly declared an interest in signing him.
