ENGLAND v AUSTRALIA 1980

At Birmingham, August 22

15-Apr-1981
At Birmingham, August 22. England won by 47 runs. The result was never in any doubt after they had been put in for the second time in three days - and Boycott and Gooch had given them another splendid start with an opening partnership of 154. Athey and the West Indian Roland Butcher, playing in his first representative match for England, made good half-centuries in England"s 320 for eight, a record total for these Prudential Trophy matches. After 30 overs Australia were 119 for three. That they made 154 in their remaining 25 overs was due mainly to Hughes, who followed his 73 not out at The Oval with a brilliant 98, and Yallop. Gooch"s 108 won him the Man of the Match award. Men of the Series were Gooch for England and Hughes for Australia. The attendance was 17,000 and the takings were £61,485.
