England v India

At Sharjah, December 11 (day/night)

15-Apr-1999
At Sharjah, December 11 (day/night). England won by seven runs. Toss: India. International debuts: D. R. Brown, M. V. Fleming.
In Sharjah's first match under lights, Stewart hit a superb 116 from 111 deliveries to provide the bedrock for the successful start of Adam Hollioake's career as an international captain. Timing the ball impeccably on a slow pitch, he hit nine fours and a six, sharing substantial stands with Knight and Hick before eight wickets fell for 41 in the last 11 overs. Strangely, India kept their best player, Tendulkar, down the order, but still they appeared to have the game under control while he and Jadeja were adding 108 for the fifth wicket. However, medium-pacer Matthew Fleming, making his international debut on the eve of his 33rd birthday, kept a cool head, dismissing Jadeja for 50 and effectively winning the game when Tendulkar, attempting to hit him square on the off side, yorked himself and was stumped by Stewart, for an 87-ball 91. Fleming finished off India with four for 45.
Man of the Match: A. J. Stewart.
