At Leeds, May 23. New Zealand won by four wickets. Toss: New Zealand. With Snedden troubled by a stomach strain, the New Zealanders recruited Pringle from the Bradford League, and he it was who made the vital breakthrough, on the point of lunch, after Gooch (88 balls) and Smith had put on 113 in 27 overs. Smith, dropped when 16 off a return catch to Morrison, went on impressively to his first one-day hundred for England and had hit sixteen fours in his 128 (168 balls) when he was fifth out. Stewart's 33 from 25 balls helped the scoring-rate, and England's Pringle reached 30 from seventeen balls by hitting Hadlee's last four deliveries to the boundary. Wright and Jones gave New Zealand a sound start, averaging more than 4 an over while putting on 97, and when Gooch dismissed them both, Crowe and the left-handed Greatbatch added 118 in twenty overs. With twelve overs remaining and eight wickets in hand the target was 72. But three wickets by Lewis and a brilliant catch by Gower at short mid-wicket left them needing 37 at approximately 9 runs an over. Smith, however, responded to the crisis ebulliently, and with Greatbatch saw his side to a dramatic win. Greatbatch reached his first one-day international hundred in the final over, having hit two sixes and nine fours in 104 deliveries.
