England's makeshift team were knocked out on an evening of extreme heat and humidity after captain Adam Hollioake rescued them with a career-best 83, which had unfortunate consequences for himself. Hollioake and Fairbrother broke England's sixth-wicket one-day record with a stand of 112, surpassing David Gower and Ian Gould's 98 v Sri Lanka at Taunton in 1983 World Cup. Fairbrother was an old hand here, having played club cricket for Abahani. But the effort exhausted Hollioake, who was so disoriented when he went out to field that he asked for sun cream even though it was night-time. He went off after four overs, leaving Hick in charge for the next nine.

South Africa had opened the bowling with off-spinner Symcox; England did not have the resources to amend their strategy and, with Hollioake hardly able to think straight, never mind bowl straight, they were up against it. Cronje and Rhodes finished the job started by Cullinan. Before England left town, wicket-keeper Jack Russell announced his international retirement. Next day, Hollioake further alarmed the England management by his choice of analogy: "I haven't actually done it, but I felt like I'd smoked ten joints." What he did have was the biggest attack of the munchies in the world. After he left the field, Hollioake ate five Mars bars, three bowls of noodles and a pile of naan bread before the physio, Dean Conway, told him to stop. And over the next 18 hours, he estimated that he got through 20 middle-sized bottles of water and at least a dozen glucose drinks.
