ENGLAND v WEST INDIES 1980

At Leeds, May 28, 29

15-Apr-1981
At Leeds, May 28, 29. West Indies won by 24 runs. The match ran into a second day, rain and bad light causing delays on the first - when the gates were closed by noon. West Indies, put in by Botham who was leading England for the first time, had a hard struggle to reach 198 off their 55 overs. In poor light and on an unsound pitch only Greenidge played an innings of any length. With two for 12 in eleven overs Old, brought into the England side on the eve of the match when Willis was unfit, had most to do with pinning West Indies down. For a long time England found runs even harder to come by. When play was called off on the first day they had received 23 overs and reached only 35 for three. However, Tavaré, playing his first match at this level, batted very well next morning, in less taxing conditions, and with some spirited assistance from Botham and Bairstow he had made a good game of it by the time he ran out of partners. Tavaré was made Man of the Match. Paying attendance was 16,000, with receipts of £60,000.
