INDIA v ENGLAND 1992-93

At Chandigarh, January 21

15-Apr-1994
At Chandigarh, January 21. India won by five wickets. Toss: India.
A match effectively decided by the toss was won by India with five wickets and almost five overs to spare. The pitch was still conspicuously damp when play began at 9 a.m. and Kapil Dev, Prabhakar and Srinath swung and seamed the ball alarmingly. England never recovered from the loss of four leading batsmen for 49 and only a stand of 83 between Smith and Hick prevented a rout.
As conditions for batting improved, India made unhurried progress to their target. Sidhu's 76 included two more sixes, off Salisbury, to take his tally against England's attack to 13. Otherwise, Salisbury, recently co-opted to the squad as Emburey and Tufnell struggled to adapt to India, bowled tidily. Chaotic crowd control resulted in a fatal shooting. Nearly 10,000 people attempted to force their way into the Sector 16 Stadium, already jam-packed to its 25,000 capacity, and as a path was being cleared for the Governor of Punjab, a pistol shot wounded two policemen, one of whom later died in hospital.
Man of the Match: N. S. Sidhu.
