For one unimportant game -- Pakistan had already won the series -- India were reinforced by Tendulkar, who had flown halfway round the world after India's exit from the Commonwealth Games. Azharuddin won his fifth toss on the trot and, wary of three failures chasing a score, batted. Tendulkar made an immediate impact, adding 121 with Azharuddin, who hit his seventh one-day international century; they set a target of 257 on a sound batting strip.

Having at last turned in a decent batting performance, though, India let themselves down with shambolic fielding. Coach Anshuman Gaekwad said they fielded like schoolboys: singles were given away, ones became twos, and catches were spilled. Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail exploited the shortcomings.
