Two strikes from Ashish Nehra in his fourth over effectively sealed West Indies' fate early in the piece. With the fourth ball of the innings' eighth over, he had Kieran Powell caught behind by MS Dhoni for 5. He produced another gem one ball later when Devon Smith fell, all too similarly.
The two quick dismissals of Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid in successive overs set India back temporarily during their chase of 130. West Indies sensed an opportunity when Gambhir chopped a Kemar Roach delivery on to his stumps, and a direct throw from David Bernard caught Dravid short of his crease. India had slipped to 12 for 2 and were looking nervy.
The third-wicket partnership of 92 between Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik put India in pole position. While Virat played the aggressor, Karthik was patient in his approach. The two did a stellar repair job as India crossed the two landmarks of 50 and 100, steadily closing in on the consolation win.
