The Glucofit Cricket Sixes organised by the Old Wesleyites Sports Club got under way in style this morning as the cream of Sri Lanka's schools cricketers competed for the prestigious 17 year event Championship.
Mahanama College started off the day's proceedings taking on Royal Institute Colombo in the curtain raiser. RI batting first managed a competitive 74 in their five overs. But the Mahanamians knocked their opponents out with four balls to spare. The order of the day for the first four games was chase-and-win as Prince of Wales College beat CWW Kannangara MV by three wickets, Thurstan College Beating this year's favorites DS Senanayake College by two wickets and last-minute entrant Lumbini College beat Trinity College Kandy by three wickets.
Throughout the day the quality and standard of cricket was indeed at a high as most of the youngsters seized every opportunity that came their way batting, bowling or fielding. They performed with much commitment, also knowing that a loss would be the end of the road for them.
Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya , De Mazanod College Kandana, Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, St. Benedict's College, St. Joseph's College and Nalanda College were impressive in their opening games, not only doing well to restrict their opposition but winning by a good margin. Mahanama and Lumbini however played two games today winning both and qualifying for the second round with ease. SIK Sandalanka of Mahanama College has the most runs thus far in the tournament with 66 runs. Incidentally he also has the most sixes (5) in his two games. Fifties were scored by RP Thattil (52*) of St. Josephs College and MS Kamileen of Thurstan College (59*). Madhushan and Kamileen lead the wickets table with three a piece.
