†NEW ZEALAND v INDIA 1985-86

At Launceston, February 2

15-Apr-1987
At Launceston, February 2. India won when New Zealand fell 22 runs short of a revised target of 190 off 45 overs. Both sides needed to win this match to join Australia in the finals, and all the early advantage was with New Zealand, who put India in to bat on a lively pitch. Yet the New Zealanders chose to produce their most indifferent performance of the series. Jeff Crowe dropped Chetan Sharma when the score was for 130 for seven, whereupon he and Binny cracked 53 in 34 minutes. New Zealand again could not score quickly enough but received the bonus, after a break for rain, of having their target reduced to 190 with 100 needed from fifteen overs and seven wickets in hand. However, Kapil Dev came back when New Zealand needed 59 from seven overs, with five wickets intact, and destroyed their chances by taking three wickets in six balls.
Man of the Match: Chetan Sharma. Attendance: 9,786.
