New Zealand v Pakistan

Pakistan in New Zealand, 2003-04

Don Cameron
15-Apr-2005
At Auckland, January 3, 2004. New Zealand won by four wickets. Toss: New Zealand.
On a tricky seaming pitch, New Zealand were relieved not to see Shoaib Akhtar - hit in the groin while practising without a box - and to win the toss. They put Pakistan in, and tight bowling left them 127 for six at 40 overs. But Moin Khan led a brilliant assault on some suspect death bowling, hitting 72 at a run a ball, and Pakistan salvaged a competitive 229. After losing Cumming in the second over, New Zealand were steadied by Fleming, and Styris played the backbone innings.
As the required rate rose above seven, he answered with lofted drives and charged to his second one-day international century. Victory came with five balls left. Styris's hundred was reached almost in secret: the new scoreboard failed to track his progress.
Man of the Match: S. B. Styris.
