Division One

Nottinghamshire's seamers knocked over Sussex for 143 inside 67 overs before the home bowlers struck back with two wickets on the first day at Hove. Sussex started poorly when Ryan Sidebottom bowled Richard Montgomorie (8) and Carl Hopkinson (2) was castled by Andrew Harris, before Murray Goodwin and Mike Yardy put on a stabilising stand of 54. Both, though, fell to Paul Franks in quick succession. Despite a typically pugnacious 33 from Matt Prior, studded with six fours, Sussex folded with Mark Ealham picking up the final two wickets to finish with the impressive figures of 2 for 17 from 13 overs. The champions, Nottinghamshire, were 72 for 2 at stumps.
A superb hundred from Michael Carberry and a very patient unbeaten fifty from John Crawley led the way for Hampshire on the first day against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Carberry and his fellow opener, James Adams, put on 113 for the first wicket and appeared in control, until Neil Carter trapped Adams in front for 40. Carberry and Crawley then put on a useful stand of 67 for the second wicket and, though Carberry fell shortly after making his hundred, Crawley batted with characteristic fortitude to end the day unbeaten on 65 as Hampshire reached a solid 280 for 4.

Division Two

After his 165 led Leicestershire to an eight-wicket win over Essex last week, Dinesh Mongia carried on his fine run of form to hit his second successive hundred as Leicestershire closed on 303 for 3 on the first day against Glamorgan at Leicester. Darren Maddy (26) fell to Andrew Davies and Aftab Habib was trapped in front by Steve Watkin as Glamorgan made use of the new ball. However Mongia, along with John Maunders (71) put on a fine 91 with Mongia remaining unbeaten on 142.
