Blazing hitting by Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Sami won this game for Pakistan after all seemed lost. Joining forces with Pakistan needing an improbable 65 from 39 balls, they used just 27 of them, as a shot-a-ball blitz overwhelmed a green New Zealand side. Sami hit two sixes from only eight balls; Razzaq - dropped twice, the second a horrendous mix-up as Cairns and wicket-keeper McCullum dithered under a skier - faced just 22 deliveries for his 47. New Zealand still had cause for some satisfaction: 291 was their highest total in one-day internationals against Pakistan. Marshall, making a one-day debut three years after his first Test, looked highly accomplished, and Cairns provided savage late hitting during an unbeaten 84, from 51 balls, with six sixes. But Pakistan topped this with their highest successful run-chase at home. A dispute over television rights meant this match was not broadcast.
