At Faisalabad, December 7, 2006 (day/night). Pakistan won by two wickets. Toss: Pakistan. Oneday
international debuts: Abdur Rehman; L. M. P. Simmons.
Inzamam-ul-Haq returned with telling impact, hitting a well-crafted, unbeaten 42 off 86 balls
to guide Pakistan home in the Iqbal Stadium's first floodlit match. It was an exciting, low-scoring
encounter on a pitch juiced up by the wet weather that had soaked the Punjab over the previous
week. Sent in, West Indies wobbled from the time Gayle and the debutant Lendl Simmons (the
nephew of the explosive former West Indian all-rounder Phil) fell for ducks. Ganga and Samuels
briefly offered hope before a dip to 79 for six, two of the wickets going to the left-arm spinner
Abdur Rehman, making a belated debut by Pakistan's standards at 26. Lara's exit, when he was
sent back too late by Samuels, was the most crucial of three run-outs. Morton hit a battling 43.
Pakistan, without Mohammad Yousuf whose pregnant wife was ill, stuttered in reply against Taylor
and Collymore, but a night when the temperature dipped to 5°C was warmed up for the home
crowd by Inzamam, who blossomed with each stroke.
Man of the Match: Inzamam-ul-Haq.
