Williamson hits the roof
Martin Guptill's penchant for hitting the roofs of stadiums is well-documented. His most famous strike came during the 2015 World Cup quarter-final when he launched an Andre Russell full-toss to the top of the Cake Tin. On Sunday, at Mount Maunganui, Kane Williamson showed off his ball-striking prowess. Williamson welcomed Taskin Ahmed's re-introduction by stepping outside off and picking the ball up with the wrists over backward square leg in the 14th over. The ball landed on the roof and sent a seagull fluttering away.
Anderson hits a curry stall
Corey Anderson then greeted part-time medium-pacer Soumya Sarkar with three successive sixes over cow corner. The second blow raised a fifty off 27 balls, but the third - a violent swipe against a full ball - was the pick of the lot. It sailed over the grassbanks and landed on a Thai curry stall.
The awkward fall at the boundary
Anderson's first six, though, was down to a fortunate slice off the outside half and assistance from the wind. He backed away outside leg and attempted a loft, but only skewed it in the air over cover. Imrul Kayes, stationed at the deep, back-tracked, lost his balance, and ended up tripping over the advertisement boards. After landing on his left knee, he hobbled off the field and did not return to bat in Bangladesh's chase of 195.
The stinging blow
Bangladesh's anxiety grew in the slog overs. At the start of the 18th over, Williamson whipped in the air to deep square leg, but Tamim Iqbal fluffed the catch. The next ball - a rank full-toss - was belted back to Mashrafe Mortaza, the bowler, with fierce power. Mashrafe stuck his right hand out, and copped a stinging blow. He aborted the over and left the field, clutching his hand. After the match, Mashrafe said he needed a scan to find out the extent of the injury.
