Sharma gets Sharma
Sandeep Sharma's strength is to swing the new ball, as was evident in the first over. Sandeep's first ball was an inswinger on a good length and Rohit Sharma inched forward to defend. His second ball also moved in but the line was wider outside off. Rohit had a leaden-footed flash at it and offered a thin nick to wicketkeeper Nikhil Naik, who completed a waist-high catch. Sandeep's celebrations were largely subdued. Captain David Miller's was not. He unleashed a wild fist pump before flanking Sandeep.
Patel nearly gets Patel
There are not many secrets between Axar Patel and Parthiv Patel. Parthiv is Axar's captain for Gujarat in the domestic set-up. When Parthiv charged at Axar in the tenth over, the spinner darted it wide outside off. Naik broke the stumps and Parthiv began to walk off. He was asked to wait, though. Third umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin examined the referral from various angles. Parthiv, it seemed, had dragged his back foot back just in time, and he was subsequently called back.
Scoop, scoop, dot, out
Mumbai Indians had splurged INR 3.8 crore on Jos Buttler in the IPL auction. In the 18th over, Buttler walked across the stumps and bent low to scoop Mohit Sharma over short fine leg for four. Off the next delivery, Buttler walked across again and unfurled another over-the-shoulder scoop, but this one sailed over the keeper. "2 Scoops" flashed on the big screen and Harbhajan Singh applauded from the dug-out.
Buttler brought out the reverse sweep off the following delivery, but did not connect with the wide yorker. Buttler shaped to swipe the next ball but Mohit's back-of-the-hand slower ball, at 103kph, deceived him and hit the stumps.
The no-ball and free-hit
In the sixth over, Mitchell Johnson hustled Parthiv with a 140kph bouncer and had him caught at deep backward square leg. Johnson's celebrations did not last long. Replays showed that Johnson had overstepped by a few inches. Incidentally, it was the first no-ball by a Kings XI bowler this season.
The free-hit ball was a slow, short delivery and Parthiv flapped it into the hands of Miller at short midwicket. He left Kings XI smarting further as he whipped the next two balls for four. Parthiv would go on to make his highest IPL score - 81 off 58 balls.
