The slips
As in losing your grip, not the fielding position. Ashok Dinda had bowled two overs for only eight runs but on what was supposed to be the last ball of his third over, he offered up a high full-toss, which was called a no-ball by the umpire, and swatted it for four by Karun Nair. It looked like the ball had slipped out of Dinda's hand. The Free Hit delivery was another full toss and this time Nair lost control of his bat attempting a wild slog. It slipped clean out of Nair's hands and landed just behind square on the leg side.
The extra extras
Amit Mishra climbed to fourth place in the wicket-takers' list this IPL when he had Usman Khawaja stumped in the ninth over of the chase. In his next over, though, he spoiled his figures and handed some gifts to the Rising Pune Supergiants batsmen. It began with a loopy wide on the off side, then came a club over long-on for six from Saurabh Tiwary, then came by a no-ball and Mishra worsened his chances by lobbing a high full toss - called as a no-ball - for the Free Hit too. Tiwary could only get a single, Ajinkya Rahane came on strike for the next Free Hit delivery, took it on and was caught at deep midwicket. Rahane smiled, Billings smiled, but Mishra didn't.
The really wide wide
The required rate had crept up over 12 and Usman Khawaja and Saurabh Tiwary had been dismissed. Delhi Daredevils would have felt they were back in the game when they handed the ball to Mohammed Shami in the 18th over. The fast bowler kept MS Dhoni quiet briefly but messed up when Rahane came on strike. Rahane, trying to disturb Shami's rhythm, made a lot of room and Shami was a little too enthusiastic in following the batsman. The ball rolled away down the leg side beyond wicketkeeper Sanju Samson's reach for a four. As if the two no-balls and a wide Mishra had bowled were not enough to spoil Daredevils' chances.
The typo
Everyone would want a memorable first match, whatever the tournament, whatever the format and there was very little danger of Usman Khawaja forgetting his IPL debut. He had flown in to bolster a Supergiants team ravaged by injury and when he was given his jersey, he spotted a typo in his name at the back. It was spelled "Khwaja." The Australian opener tweeted about it a few hours before the start of the match, but with little time at hand, he had no choice but to wear the erroneous jersey at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
