At Cape Town, March 3, 2006 (day/night). South Africa won by 196 runs. Toss: South Africa.
An astonishing spell of fast bowling from Ntini set up South Africa's most emphatic victory against Australia. Half-centuries from Gibbs and Kemp helped stack up a daunting total, but Newlands traditionally offers more swing and seam movement under floodlights. Bowling with extreme control and lively pace, Ntini made full use of conditions to reduce Australia to seven for four. His opening spell was four for 12 in seven overs. Nel chipped in with three of the next four wickets but Ntini returned to collect the last couple for a South African-record six for 22, surpassing Allan Donald's six for 23 against the lesser threat of Kenya at Nairobi in 1996. Gibbs had stroked the ball through the covers with ease and Kemp thrashed four sixes, but Australia might as well have been batting on the moon. Katich laboured painfully for 16 from 47 balls and Hussey eked out 22 from 49. The final result was so extraordinarily lop-sided that Gilchrist, standing in as captain for the injured Ponting, was more inclined to laugh than cry.
Man of the Match: M. Ntini. Attendance: 15,976.
