South Africa v Kenya
At Kimberley, October 14
15-Apr-2003
At Kimberley, October 14. South Africa won by nine wickets. South Africa 4 pts. Toss: Kenya.
International debut: C. K. Langeveldt.
After the débâcle against India, Kenya had a net with Bob Woolmer to hone techniques, and a
night on the town to perk up spirits; something certainly raised their performance. Three half-centuries
helped to ensure they did not concede a bonus point. Shah showed more aggression in
a stylish 55 off 67 balls, while Odoyo hit a maiden international fifty. But, on an excellent batting
surface, they still scored too slowly. Though his first international wicket came from one of his
worst balls, the fast-medium swing of Langeveldt - a prison warder off the field - proved reliable,
and Pollock was as metronomic as ever. Gibbs gave South Africa's reply a blazing start, and
pounded 14 fours before slicing to backward point in the 19th over. By then, they were halfway
to their target, and Dippenaar - replacing Kirsten, who had a thigh strain - and Klusener, who
pulled, cut and drove Odumbe for five successive fours, saw them home. Afterwards, Odumbe
told a press conference that one of the umpires (by implication, Orchard) was unfriendly to Kenya;
referee Ahmed Ebrahim condemned his comments as "highly scurrilous" and banned him for two
matches.
Man of the Match: H. H. Gibbs.
