Tony Marshall named as candidate for WICB president

Tony Marshall, a former director of the West Indies board, has been nominated as a candidate for the post of president of the West Indian board. The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) put forward Marshall's name for the position, which will fall vacant in July when Teddy Griffith, the current president, steps down. Griffith announced last week about his intentions not to seek a second term owing to personal and family considerations.

Speaking about its decision, Stephen Alleyne, the BCA president, told The Nation, "Tony has had a fair amount of experience as far as administration in West Indies cricket is concerned. He is a former WICB director, former BCA president and a current member of the WICB marketing committee and he would have a good knowledge and insight into West Indies cricket."

There have also been strong calls from former cricketers in favour of Deryck Murray, the former West Indies wicketkeeper. However, Murray was quoted as saying in The Jamaica Gleaner that these reports were only speculative, and that he hadn't made up his mind yet.

Another name to spring up in the race for president is that of Ken Gordon, the former CCN Group chairman, who was approached to become a nominee. "Someone called me and asked me about it [becoming a nominee]," Gordon was quoted as saying by The Trinidad Express, "and I told them I would like to give it some thought because this kind of came out of the sky. I have great interest in cricket and anything one can do one will want to do. But this post is on the administrative side and I'll have to consider it seriously. It's very early days yet, we'll have to wait and see."

The new president will be elected at the WICB's Annual General Meeting on July 16 in St Maarten.
