Wide to first slip, and Hussey's lesson in running

The late adjustment
AB de Villiers' first six sixes were all either charged down the ground or hacked from the crease. To pick up his seventh six, Ravindra Jadeja made him work a little harder. As the left-arm spinner threw in one well outside the off stump, de Villiers utilised the swiftness of his feet to step across and smite it down the ground. It resulted in a six but wasn't the prettiest sight, but he would certainly take the outcome, even if it lacked in beauty.

The lesson
Michael Hussey's international retirement hasn't dimmed his enthusiasm for the game. He still pushes hard - case in point was the first ball of the sixth over when Hussey completed the single on offer and was so keen on taking a second that he was already halfway down the pitch when the bowler, David Wiese, failed to collect the throw from fine leg. Hussey paused only momentarily to check if Suresh Raina wanted the second and once his call was obliged, Hussey made his ground with ease. The lesson here is that he was always looking for the extra run and turned immediately to see whether the opportunity was there. It also showed his selflessness that was well-documented during his international career.

The move
During the toss, Henry Davids talked about his seam attack as key to defending a total on the Ranchi pitch. But it was Roelof van der Merwe, the left-arm spinner, who took the new ball ahead of Morne Morkel, Rowan Richards and Marchant de Lange. He had success immediately though, picking up the wicket of M Vijay off his third ball with one that skidded straight on. It turned out to be a wise move too, because that was probably the only time when a spinner could grip the ball properly on such a wet outfield.

The wide
Davids however didn't use spin for the next five overs and put the onus on his tall fast bowlers. But they were flayed to every corner of the ground by Raina, mainly. Marchant de Lange started poorly, conceding a wide that was banged in the middle of the pitch before it swung away between wicketkeeper and first slip who, curiously, shied away from the oncoming ball.

The call
The Titans' openers were going at a fair rate until Jacques Rudolph decided to take on Dwayne Bravo's throw from the deep. In the seventh over, Davids tapped the ball through cover and called for the run. Having finished the first one in good time, Rudolph turned and took off. Davids' call was a loud no, but it was too late as the throw that came in to MS Dhoni found Rudolph a foot short of his ground.
