England v Sri Lanka, 2014

Wisden's review of the third ODI, England v Sri Lanka, 2014

15-Apr-2015
At Manchester, May 28 (day/night). England won by ten wickets. Toss: England.
Another game, another collapse, though this time the guilty party were Sri Lanka, who slumped to their third-lowest one-day total, and lost before the lights came on. Cook, back from a groin niggle, won the toss in overcast conditions on a pitch offering pace and bounce, but that alone could not explain the lack of resistance. On his home ground, Anderson started the rout in exemplary fashion with a spell of 7-2-10-2, having Dilshan caught behind off the inside edge, then benefiting from Thirimanne's wild charge-and-swing. Jordan took over to pick up his maiden List A five-for. He saw off Sangakkara - whose 13 proved the top score - with a delivery of full length, and used the short ball sparingly but to good effect, especially against the unsettled Chandimal. Cook and Bell made easy work of the target, and Sri Lanka's day was summed up when Senanayake dropped Cook on 12 at square leg off Malinga. Bell's emphatic straight six off Herath wrapped up a match that lasted just 36.1 overs. England's fifth ten-wicket win was their quickest successful run-chase.
