At Lauderhill, June 30, 2012. West Indies won by 56 runs. Toss: New Zealand.
New Zealand, rusty in all departments in their first fixture for three months, lost not only the match
but also their captain Ross Taylor (temporarily) and the left-arm spinner Ronnie Hira (for the rest of the tour). Taylor fell heavily on his left shoulder when he missed a swirling catch off Pollard and, after cutting
two fours in the run-chase, winced and retired hurt. Gayle was inadvertently responsible for two
other injuries: Hira dislocated a finger trying to intercept a ferocious straight blow; Oram strained his
left knee attempting to prevent the second of Gayle's seven fours, and had trouble running in to bowl
or between the wickets. Gayle and Pollard, who hit five sixes each, blazed 108 off the last seven
overs as West Indies clocked up their highest total in Twenty20 internationals. New Zealand were
never in contention against Narine's befuddling spin and sharp fielding that produced two direct-hit
run-outs in the same over.
Man of the Match: C.H.Gayle.
