West Indies A in India 2013-14 September 25, 2013

Fidel Edwards replaces injured Cotterrell

ESPNcricinfo staff

Fast bowler Fidel Edwards will join the West Indies A squad in India as the replacement for the injured left-arm seamer Sheldon Cotterell. Cotterell had to pull out of the tour after suffering from pain in his left knee.

Cotterrell was named in both the limited-overs and four-day squads but did not play any of the three one-dayers or the one-off T20. He was not in the XI for the ongoing unofficial Test in Mysore.

"It was a devastating blow when we found out that Sheldon was injured and could not play. He is one of the most promising quick bowlers we have in the West Indies," team manager Lockhart Sebastien said. "We were looking forward to seeing him perform well on this tour for the West Indies A team, but unfortunately he has been ruled out due to injury.

"He was impressive in recent months, especially in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and this was a great chance for him to show his skills again. We are still confident we have the bowlers to do the job and we expect the team to continue doing well on this tour."

Edwards last played for West Indies during the tour of Bangladesh late last year. He didn't feature in West Indies' home international season this year but played the CPL, in which he took nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul.

Besides Edwards, the other seamers in the West Indies A squad in India are Miguel Cummins, Delorn Johnson and the allrounder Jonathan Carter.

Ronsford Beaton Should have been selected instead of Fidel Edwards who is already over the hill. The WI selectors needs to make decisions with the future in mind and not the past which they always do

    Kesrick Williams should have gone.

If it comes to that the Windies could always call on Jason Holder, who's around playing the Champion's League for CSK and looks a great future prospect. Though he is definitely getting paid better by playing in the T20 league rather than for WI A, am not so sure it makes for a better exercise for him in cricketing terms. He does still gain knowledge of subcontinental conditions by playing for CSK, but bowling just 4 overs in a day's cricket at berserker batsmen in staggered spells isn't quite the same as that of bowling extended spells at batsmen looking to craft a proper first-class innings. These unofficial Tests would've provided him experience likely to prove invaluable in the future. Talent-wise, Holder very much seems like the real deal. Watched him bowl a fantastic death-stages over at Darren Sammy in a CSK/Hyd match the other day - all pin-point perfect yorkers at high pace that literally gave Sammy a crushed toe and ended ripping his leg-stump out of the ground. Real venom.

    Re: Eitan Shai,

Beaton is already on the tour - he played in the shorter formats with little effect.

However, I agree that a younger bowler should have been chosen ahead of Edwards - see my earlier post.

sheldon cotterall is not injured he is just discourage because of the fight he is getting look how well he bowls in cpl and not even one game he got in india so far if this is grooming up and coming brilliant youngster then we the west indies arent going anywhere no time soon. everyone on the tour should get a game in whichever format they are picked for if its even one game come on now this is like dawm practice.

Fidel Edwards seem to be the Zaheer Khan of West Indies. Both should give way for 'future stars"; and not block their way.

Why bring him onto the 'A' tour? Fidel Edwards should not represent the full side ever again - he's had far too many chances. In the past, he hit great speeds but he never reached the level of consistency required. If he is selected ahead of Cummins or Johnson, it would further discourage two promising young fast bowlers who should be in the selectors thoughts. Sorry Fidel, but you had more than your fair share of chances.
