Beating India will give us momentum - Hafeez

178

Pakistan will depart for Bangladesh tomorrow with the exception of Shahid Afridi, who is undergoing a week-long rehabilitation before joining the squad on March 17. Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez is happy that their opening World T20 game on March 21 is a high-pressure one against archrivals India.

"Winning against India will give us a much-needed momentum," Hafeez said. "It's a pressure game wherever you play against them. You have pressure from the media, your nation and when you perform well against them it gets easy for you. It's a very important game for us. As a player, also as a captain, I am very happy that our first match is against India and from there we can take off."

Pakistan, the 2009 World T20 champions and runners up in 2007, are coming off the Asia Cup where they lost in the final to Sri Lanka. Hafeez said it was important to carry forward that momentum.

"You have to be positive in your thinking against all the teams and guard against complacency," he said. "Two things are very important in a big tournament - one is momentum which you have to carry, and we performed well in the Asia Cup. The second is luck and with the prayers of our countrymen, the luck factor will also be with us.

"The approach is clear as we have to play hard cricket and there should be no fear of failure. In short-form cricket you can't recover if you make a mistake, and we will try not to commit mistakes."

Hafeez confirmed that his squad was fully fit, quashing rumours that a few players were carrying injuries. Pakistan last played a T20 in December against Sri Lanka in the UAE but have played ample limited-overs cricket in the lead-up to the World T20.

"We have one week with a couple of warm-up games to tune up the side and everyone is acquainted with the conditions in Bangladesh. Fitness might have been the concern during the Asia Cup but it happens when you play back-to-back matches. Everyone is fine. Afridi's is not that serious and he will be fit. He is going through rehab and as a captain I need a fit Afridi, that's why we have given him time."

Pakistan's major strength is bowling but in the Asia Cup, they managed to take ten wickets only once in five games, against Afghanistan. Hafeez was aware that his strike bowlers Umar Gul and Junaid Khan have suffered a dip in form.

"The performance of the fast bowlers will be key for us because they have to play their roles with both the new and old ball," Hafeez said. "Mohammad Akram (bowling coach) is working hard with both of them in the nets, but in the end it's up to them to go out and deliver. We have to support them."

Pakistan has best hitters up the order as well as down the order. So it will be a fun to watch Pakistan's batting especially aginst Indian bowling. If u remember past then you are ruining your present and future. No doubt India have won matches more than Pakistan in WC but let me tell you that was past and nowadays Pakistan have more chances because their main guns are performing well. Good Luck Pakistan.

i've always said this - Pakistan is the most dangerous side when it comes to T20 format. watch out for them in this WC again as they've proven their metal in all of the previous T20 WC's.

  • on March 14, 2014, 4:28 GMT

Afridi is in such explosive form that provided he is physically fit, he alone can swing the pendulum in Pakistan's favor. Fawad and Shehzad can make up for whatever weakness exists in Pakistan's T-20 batting line up.

    Good luck Pakistan!

  • Practical_person on March 14, 2014, 4:17 GMT

Pakistan can win if they chase because no target is daunting against the Indian bowling lineup but at the same time if Indian batting performs to its potential, no total is threatening when they chase. In short, the team that chases will win.

India will be a hard team to beat in this T20 WC. The Indian middle lower order is really dangerous with the likes of Raina, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Jadeja & Ashwin. The Indian bowling is weak but I think it won't be exposed as much as it is in Tests or ODI's...The bowling combo of Yuvraj/Raina, Jadeja & Ashwin will be handy in Bangladesh conditions...

So let's get this straight, since M. Akram took over as bowling coach who himself was a fast bowler, two of our premier fast bowlers have suffered a dip in form? Hmmmm! Does take a genius to work out that something's wrong there.

  • on March 13, 2014, 16:02 GMT

Whoever wins, I hope it is a close game. India have a better chance because in T-20, is a batsmen's game and only one or two batsmen need to click out of 11. Even slog hitting by one of lower order batsman can change the game. While only 1 or 2 bowlers out of 5 need to have a bad day for the team to loose. India's batting is more experienced in T-20 pressure situations. Pakistan fast bowlers are not in the best form and if they don't click, Pakistan has no chance of winning against anyone.

  • on March 13, 2014, 15:18 GMT

Looking forward to a good competitive cricket, which will satisfy all genuine cricket lovers, irrespective of who wins.

  • gauravm5 on March 13, 2014, 15:00 GMT

Pakistan cricket fans are saying India can win only in India. Let me tell all of you, India won Champions Trophy in England in June 2013 followed by a tri-series victory in WI in july 2013. Pakistan failed to win even a single match in 2013 champions trophy and they also lost to Zimbabwe in an ODI in August 2013.

I have seen some comments calling Indian batsmen flat track bullies but how good pakistan batsmen have been outside subcontinent in ODIs. Most of the pakistan batsmen are flat track bullies. Hafeez has scored lot of runs against subcontinent bowlers but outside Asia, his ODI batting average is 17.75 (against Australia), 24 (against England), 18.88 (against South Africa) and 21.70 (against New Zealand). Same holds true for Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik & Kamran Akmal.

  • gauravm5 on March 13, 2014, 14:48 GMT

@Paki-Cricketlover: How could you forget India's easy & convincing win against pakistan in June 2013 Champions Trophy, and let me tell you that match was played in ENGLAND. India's so called weak bowling attack bowled Pakistan out for just 165 in Champions Trophy 2013. Also, in the last T20 world cup held in SL in 2012, Pakistan while batting first managed to score only 127 runs in 20 overs and then Indian batsmen thrashed Pakistan bowlers all over the ground thereby winning the match with lot of ease. Although, India lost to pakistan in the Asia Cup but it was not an easy win for Pakistan. Indian bowlers fought hard and took the game to the last over. No one can ignore the fact that in Asia Cup, India played with their 2nd string batting lineup. Also, note that Pakistan has never beaten India in any of the ICC WORLD events till now.

  • likeintcricket on March 13, 2014, 14:17 GMT

India and Pakistan both looks to be equal in strength. Both teams batsman are equal in explosiveness and can turn the table on their day. Pakistan bowlers has some edge in experience but in Asia cup they didn't bowled good so it's a challenge for them. Somehow Pakistan take too much pressure against India in World cup games. Afridi is in great form and he alone can win a match from any position. Kohli for India can do the same. But we cannot predict a one clear winner as any team can beat other team in T20. I predict Australia as their batsman are in great touch however they don't have great spinners in their side. West Indies once again could be a surprise package.

  • on March 13, 2014, 13:44 GMT

Whatever I post, its not as an Indian but as a cricket enthusiast! Both teams have their share of advantage. To begin with, India don't play Pakistan very often and that according to me is an advantage to Pakistan since their reserve of unorthodox players is more than India (most Indian players play orthodox cricket which Pakistan players have tackled in the past). If they ball first they SHOULD restrict India to under 160 or the game is lost. Agreed India don't have world class bowlers, but Pakistan batsmen aren't in the best frame at the moment and Indian bowlers are slightly less out-of-form. For India, their plethora of experience with T20 will come into picture. Rohit, Dhawan, Raina, Kohli, Yuvraj and Dhoni are all matchwinners and provided 2 of them stick around, anything around 180-200 is possible. Mishra showed good promises in B'desh and he's no mug with the bat either, neither are Ashwin and Jadeja. All in all, its going to be a good game of cricket and I look forward to it!

  • on March 13, 2014, 13:36 GMT

I think Hafeez team is one of the strongest. Shahid afridi shots are missile if he clicks on right time, he can change the game from zero to win. world is thinking about bowling of Pakistan but I suggest Pakistan batting will click in bangladesh as they done in Asia cup....

  • Resistant on March 13, 2014, 13:32 GMT

This is going to be very exciting contest... Waiting for it

  • on March 13, 2014, 12:53 GMT

I think India has strong batting line up and dhoni has also revived. He is a match winner. Fast bowling of India is more powerful than pakistan but the spinners of pakistan can change the game. specially batsmen , they are unpredictable. ...... so best of luck both teams.

  • beggars on March 13, 2014, 12:48 GMT

In your dreams Hafeez!! Indians play a lot of IPL which stands them in good stead. Somehow i feel this time it is going to be SOUTH AFRICA and hmmm dont forget devilliers he is consistent in all formats and as gooder player as any to play. His innovative shots are treat to watch.

  • on March 13, 2014, 12:46 GMT

I request everyone to ENJOY the game and congratulate the winner. Thank u all.

  • on March 13, 2014, 12:32 GMT

what an batting line up india is having.... dhavan, rohit, raina, yuraj, rahane, jadeja, dhoni all are game changers if only two of them click on their day.....

  • on March 13, 2014, 12:27 GMT

I think India is going to win the game, as they have done before in the WCs. They have performed well under pressure in big tournaments against Pakistan. Also they have a very strong batting line up, specially with Dhoni coming back into the team and the leadership issue looks sorted. Pakistan, however, would start the game in more uncertain way, as in terms of leadership they have Hafeez who will be tested in the this tournament. The bowling is under pressure as they were smashed in the Asia Cup. The positive thing is the for of Umar Akmal and Shahzad. Afridi as always un predictable.

  • on March 13, 2014, 12:25 GMT

come on guys. we need to win over India and forget about world cup, we already won it in 2009 but we have never won a match with india in world cup so let's do it this time. • on March 13, 2014, 11:50 GMT

believe me neither India nor Pakistan will win WT20......

  • Maqsood_aalam on March 13, 2014, 11:30 GMT

Clever Hafeez said beating India would give them momentum. He is so clever that if he loose against India, their entire rhythm would be broken. I fear not a single win for Pakistan in this world cup. Oz bowlers will thrash their batting line up & Warner Co. will make pieces of their so called best bowling line up. WI are in great touch & better shape as seen against Poms in current series. The qualifier whoever be will take advantage of this situation. Pak fans should bring down their bragging voices. You had said enough on Bangladesh in Asia Cup now we will see much sooner than later.

  • 1st_WC_without_Sachin on March 13, 2014, 11:25 GMT

My predictions: Rohit will be India's 'trumph card'. Yuvraj will be 'hero' by bat and bowl. Mishra and sir jadeja will be 'strikers'. Dhoni will be 'successful' captain, by winning 5 Global events (WT20 2007, WC2011, CT2013, WT2014, WC2015).

  • cricket_slcsupport on March 13, 2014, 11:19 GMT

Simple Rule for both teams - PAK get Dhoni out and you win. IND get Afridi out and you win.

  • on March 13, 2014, 11:13 GMT

  • cerratic on March 13, 2014, 11:07 GMT

Somebody up there must love Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Sohail Tanvir. They keep coming back even though they have failed miserably many times in the past. If they want to bring back earlier players, Abdul Razzaq would be much better in this format than these three losers. Is it impossible to find a decent wicket-keeper/ batsman in Pakistan apart from the 3 Akmal brothers?

    1. Ahmed Shehzad 2. Kamran Akmal 3. Mohammad Hafeez 4. Umar Amal 5. Shoaib Malik 6. Sohaib Maqsood 7. Shahid Afridi 8. Sohail Tanvir 9. Bilawal Bhatti 10. Saeed Ajmal 11. Junaid Khan

should be team against India. No Sharjeel Khan please. We have had enough of him.

  • on March 13, 2014, 10:53 GMT

My Playing XI for Pakistan 1) Ahmed Shehzad 2) Kamran Akmal 3) Sharjeel 4) Hafeez 5) Afridi 6)Sohaib Maqsood 7) Shoaib Malik 8) Anwar Ali 9)Umer Gul 10) Saeed Ajmal 11) Junaid This will give them around 7/8 batsmen and a variety of 7 bowlers. Kamran Akmal had always been explosive at the top and can easily get an opening stand of around 40/50 and in T20s this is a pretty good start. Malik, if plays to his full potential can hold the innings together if they are in tatters. Afridi should be best at no. 5 since he can easily get 3-5 overs to utilise and as we would still have Shoaib, Sohaib and Anwar Ali, he can take risks.

India ll definitely win this match and cup also... Pak is an unpredictable team but in major tourneys live world cups they have worst record against India.. India have Master class batting line up with Dhavan, Rohit, Kohli, UV,Rahane,Raina,Dhoni and World class all rounders like Jaddu and Aswhin, and limited overs specialist spinner Mishra and good pace attack with Mohith, Bhuvi and Shami. My Final 11 is 1)Dhawan 2)Rahane 3)Kohli 4)Rohith 5)UV 6)Raina 7)MSD 8)Jaddu 9)Mishra 10)Mohith 11)Shami All the best Team India

There is complete change in complexion of Indian team in this world cup. They should go up with 7 batsmen+ 2 medium fast + 2 spinners. They should start with Rahane/Dhawan as openers, followed by Kohli, Yuvi, Raina, Rohit & MS. Openers should attack Hafeez/Gul from ball 1. Rahane particularly to take on Hafeez. Dhawan to look after Gul, tallah & Junaid. Virat proceed further. Yuvi, Raina & Rohit should blast the others. Because Mirpur is dead one on which you can do anything without fear. Because Rohit/Dhawan were under pressure due to new comers at bat no. 4,5 & much dependence on Virat only, they couldn't give brisk fearless start in last few series. But not now. No need to play Rahane at 4 or 5. He will do his best at 1 to 3 only. No need to play allrounder Binny or Ashwin as a fifth bowler as they are completely out of touch. Yuvi, Raina, Rohit & Even Dhawan can share fifth bowler's quota. Mohit & Bhuvi with Jadu & Mish can be excellent bowling attack in present squad & format.

    My suggested Indian team:

Dhawan Rahane Kohli Raina Yuvraj Rohit/ Stuart Binny Dhoni Jadeja- Amit Mishra/ Ashwin Shami Yadav/ Aaron

  • on March 13, 2014, 9:04 GMT

India have best batting line-up for this pitches. Last time it was Australia match that cost India and Piyush but they own all other matches. This time they have Mishra, Jadeja, Yuvraj, Bhuvneshwar and Shami to count on opposition batting. Batting line-up is solid as always. Raina, Yuvraj known for t20 and Dhawan, Rahane, Dhoni, Kohli are nightmares for opposition and if Rohit clicks then job is done. My concern is forms of Raina, Yuvraj and Bhuvneshwar. Rohit is unpredictable.

I am not so sure that India is too bothered with the T20 WC...except for bragging rights, it wins you nothing. Somewhat like the now dead Champions trophy. Who cares that India, Pak, Eng and WI have won the previous editions? People - at least the cricket followers are bothered more about Test matches and ODIs to a lesser extent. Indian players and board have a bigger fish to fry - the IPL.

  • Naresh28 on March 13, 2014, 8:30 GMT

Indian weakness is in their bowling. This makes sides confident they can beat India. Indian pace bowlers should be changed regularly so that the selectors get to know who is the best for which format. So far only SHAMI qualifies to be a regular - the axe should hang over the rest.

  • Yousufahmed1 on March 13, 2014, 8:29 GMT

@ faizee02 Since your are so fond of past record I bet your money will be on IND to beat PAK as PAK has never beaten India in WC. Isn't that Right? Wrong, anybody can win its all about which team is in right space of mind. AUS and WI are looking good though AUS will need at least one more world class spinner. If Mishra plays all the games I bet India will also have a good chance.

I think oz will struggle with surfaces that Pak and India are familiar with. I expect an Asian winner with plenty of upsets along the way. So a Bangladesh v Afghanistan final then.

  • on March 13, 2014, 8:10 GMT

Good luck Pakistan and good luck Hafeez

  • faizee02 on March 13, 2014, 8:01 GMT

Few people believe that India is going to win the WCT20. I don't think so. Their record shows that since the inception of IPL, they have not even qualified to Semi Finals of the T20WC. Yes they won the inaugral edition. SInce then..just a bunch or ordinary players. I put my money on AUS, PAK and SL.

  • Solid_Snake on March 13, 2014, 7:56 GMT

@criclovingmind:So India is trapped so easily? & even players like Talha are now scaring other teams.Straange. Btw Pak always got something new for India..Irfan was once brought in,then Talha..Let's see what comes next :P I wonder why India never thought of counter attack by brining in new batsman as a surprise package... PS:India always got an edge in WC's..It's not like Pak cannot beat India..It's more psychological related thing..Pak players have to forget that they are playing against India in WC..Just play normal & they will do just fine..

  • sundersingh on March 13, 2014, 7:42 GMT

India will win surely bcoz, in the Asia cup indians r acted in the pakistani way ( tries to impress from ball one ). but now they know all the weakness of opposite player and act according to it. i think pak did surprised ind with the inclusion of Talha as a debutant, Indians fell in the trap but now they r aware of every player....

  • on March 13, 2014, 7:28 GMT

    gud luck pak & ind

  • on March 13, 2014, 7:26 GMT

Losing team here will narrow the opportunity for make to the semis but both teams have upper hands over other in the group for get to the semis as Aus and WI have lower hand right before beginning the series. Aus and WI will Definitely struggle this kind of tracks, further Ajmal is a big PLUS for Pak against any opposition as we see even sub-continent's players struggles against him.

  • ats78 on March 13, 2014, 7:07 GMT

Good comments from most of the readers except for a few Srilankans, i dont know why but they are turning anti against india after the 2011 WC final loss. BCCI has always supported the SL board whenever they were short of funds and when you hear the commentary on air you will see Gavaskar shastri always praising Mahela Sanga,..... but still some readers have very negative views of India, dont be pessimistic guys its just a game of cricket, right now they are cash rich than its good for asian teams or else the Aussies and English board would have eaten us up. So be neutral and write positive comments..

  • HawksEyeFocused on March 13, 2014, 7:03 GMT

Hafeez is a classic act. A pure talent oozing out of him. He is a present world cricket's legend. Pak needs to beat India to stamp authority in the T20 WC with a bang!!!

Hafeez has not said anything wrong. Winning the first game always provides momentum. What do we expect him to say that we can't win and we have already lost.

It is good that first game is with India and it will not decide immediately who out of the two teams will stay and who will leave. So pressure will be eased somewhat.

  • on March 13, 2014, 6:17 GMT

i am gonna say india will win this WC yes we have a new team relatively inexperienced players.. but on 21st with the inclusion of T20 specialist like yuvi and raina will change the game... and we all know the past india has always played well against pak in WC this will be a good game.. and kholi wont feel the pressure as MS returns as captain so the last ball defeat in asia cup wont be an issue... pak are a fine team wen it comes to T20 but still i go with IND cause they rise up to big occasions....

India ,Pakistan,Westindies and Austrailia along with either Banglas or Afghans. And only two will qualify tough group and who ever losses in the first match may not qualify. As always Srilanka are in easy group will qualify for the knockouts and loose out against the team from the tough group.Pakistan bowling is looking weak and if not revived will cost them. But both Austrailia and West Indies are looking strong. For India, Dhoni have to reinvent himself there will be one more trophy in his cabinet the resources are always there.

Hafeez, stop talking nonsence thing & show your strength on 21st on the field, mind you this team is not an asia cup team

  • on March 13, 2014, 5:00 GMT

In past five years,India has ended Pakistan's campaign in every major ICC tournament.Mr Hafeez should always remember this fact.India is a very capable side to chase any total and therefore most likely to win T20 this year.Remmber T20 is not a game for fast bowlers because every team has more then enough Big hitters like Chris Gayle,Like Dhoni, like Affridi.Team which has medium pacers and smart spinners will most likely win this tournament.

  • on March 13, 2014, 4:54 GMT

Well Said M.Hafeez! Best Of Lck Pakistan!!!!

  • haq33 on March 13, 2014, 4:37 GMT

Pakistan are in fact in an awful position, as suddenly we have become dependent on Afridi performing, which we know happens once in a blue moon. I love the guy and his place is justified but we simply cannot be dependent on him. Others must show form and consider his performance as a lucky bonus. Recent weeks have shown only Shezad is in form. Pakistan are actually one of the weakest teams based on current form.

  • Fast_Track_Bully on March 13, 2014, 4:30 GMT

Similarly, it will be a good opening for the WC for India with a win against Pakistan. With Dhoni,Yuvi, Raina are back, it is easily possible. @Hyder Zaman . One thing I can bet with you is Pakistan not going to win this WC and they will lost to some associates too as it was in earlier WCs. All the best Men in Blue!

  • HawksEyeFocused on March 13, 2014, 4:27 GMT

Hafeez has done wonderful job by giving such great comments. This shows his over-flowing morale and potency. I wish Pak will step in the tournament by beating India convincingly. Go green go................we are always with U!!!

  • Cpt.Meanster on March 13, 2014, 4:00 GMT

Hafeez needs to be very careful with his choice of words. Any immature comments by him will only make it worse IF Pakistan lose. India will be fairly confident in the World T20 with Dhoni coming back as team skipper. India usually perform well in ICC tournaments and Pakistan need to respect that. Last week Bangladesh's skipper Mushfiq made some unnecessary comments about revenge against Afghanistan. Hafeez shouldn't fall into the same category. It's okay to be confident but over confidence is not good. India is a fantastic team and Pakistan would do well to remember that.

  • on March 13, 2014, 3:39 GMT

Pakistans chanses in up comming t20 world cup are dark.fast bowelers are not in their best and batting also very weak.Pakistan should find the replacement of umerGul and must introduce new fast bowlers.

  • Kak-mal_Khan on March 12, 2014, 23:55 GMT

If Umar Gul & Junaid Khan can work in tandem as right and left combination and get their lethal yorkers working in the death overs than Pakistan have a chance. I think this was definately an area of concern in the recently concluded Asia Cup. One type of player that I think Pakistan are missing is someone like a Rana Naved or Yasir Arafat, someone to change the pace and mix up deliveries, there is no need for an out and out pacer on these surfaces as the short ball will get punished more often than not in this format. On Hafeez, he is consistently good slow bowler, but not a good bat who seems to deliver with luck on his day, as captain I have my doubts, mainly because of his conduct on the field, I dont see any calming influence in him, he gets aggitated easily and not in a good way, which must annoy his teammates. Pakistan can not win this cup without having a couple of losses, it is important that Pakistan suffer a loss in the early stages, this is the Pakistan way (cornered tiger)!

  • mshyder on March 12, 2014, 23:33 GMT

it is going to be a tough task for Pakistan, with such an imbalanced team. They had one Wk for Asia Cup (50 overs tournament) but strangely have 2 WKs for 20 overs WC! Does not make sense. They have excess baggage in shape of Malik who performed miserably in the recent BBL. Talha is good for tests but even in ODIs he is very expensive and would be a run feast for the batsmen in T20s. If Pakistan does anything of note it will be nothing less than a miracle. I wish them good luck, they need it.

  • Saadcricketlover on March 12, 2014, 23:27 GMT

Best of luck. I don't see much chance for Pakistan. We have retarded shohaib malik and kamran akmal who seldomnly perform even in domestic these days. Shohaib's selection makes somewhat sense but kamran is a total loser. He has been fumbling catches in domestic and hasn't performed he is a sifarshi.

  • kc69 on March 12, 2014, 22:51 GMT

If winning against India gives you much needed momentum, then where was you momentum in Asia cup final mr.Hafeez?

  • on March 12, 2014, 22:28 GMT

In T20 anyhting can happen. But I will put my money on Australia. They have a long list of big hitters. WI will have a very ordinary tournament. NZ will create headaches for many. And Pakistan, hard to say. They are banking too much on Afridi and no one knows which Afridi will show up on match day. Pakistan's bowling was lack lustre and there goes its biggest strength. Fawad Alam is the ony bright light in the Pak side.

Though I am an Indian fan, I must confess that India are underdogs this WCT20. This underdog tag cud work in their favor as well, just as it did in the inaugral in 2007! I dont think any team can take any team lightly in this format.

@ Tanvir Ahmad India are placed at No.2 and Pak at No.3 in T20 rankings - how did u come up with the fact that Pak are placed above India in rankings?!!! I am puzzled! In fact India are placed above Pakistan in all three formats!!! Please chk mate!!!

My predictions,so far it never went wrong,i predicted about 2011 WC,and semi finals as well and also about asia cup 1 week before about SL winning this..and also predicted about chapmions trophy which also got right. ICC T20 2014 predictions semi-final1 NZ vs Australia semi-final 2 India vs Pakistan Final India vs Australia Winners:-India Man of Series-Yuvraj Singh or V kohli, but stars study of Yuvi in 2014 is over dominating kohli too.Whichever tournament luckily when yuvi performed 100% India won 2 ICC cups.Rest lets see how my astro star knowledge comes out this time around. This is as per my own interest in predictions and been right most of times. But if I go with gut feeling then SL,WI also are key teams to win this time around.

  • vish2020 on March 12, 2014, 21:16 GMT

Pakistan always looks at india games in major tournaments as the only thing they want to win. The whole country and fans look at it with too much seriousness and other reasons. Indian people look at it as a very strong rivalry but goal is always to win the tournament. So here to make sides happy, I hope Pak wins the game against India, and India goes on to win the Tournament haha

  • on March 12, 2014, 21:16 GMT

pakistan's t20 record is amazing. they have a strong t20 team as this format suits many of their batsmen. this is also visible by the fact that they have played in semi finals of all the wct20s so far. ( 2 finals & 2 semis ) no other team was able to do it. and they have ability to do it again.

also this time their batting looks in good touch. just fast bolwers are a bit off colour. but experienced enough to correct the mistakes.

  • on March 12, 2014, 21:10 GMT

some people here are criticizing hafeez. what would you expect a captain to say if he was asked about a big game coming? how was he talking more? he just said that we are ok about it.

  • on March 12, 2014, 21:09 GMT

in last 10 years, if u check stats, its very much equal or just 2-3 games difference in odis between india and pakistan. but in t20, india's record against pakistan is great. winning almost all apart from 1.

  • dmqi on March 12, 2014, 21:08 GMT

Pak Captain should look at the Asian championship game. They have neither a consistent batsman nor a wicket taking bowler except Ajmal. With a mediocre bowling and top bating line up, India is the favorite. Pak bowling at times seem to be joke. Afridi's super hit may not work always, just remember that. Moreover, Dhoni will lead who is 10 times better captain than Hafiz. Good luck talking machine.

  • alischeme on March 12, 2014, 20:49 GMT

"Winning against India will give us a much-needed momentum." He shouldn't have said that. Our seamers have not been performing. IND's batting is better than ours too. Also, they'll have Yuvraj, Raina and Dhoni who were missing in the Asia Cup.

Not saying that its impossible for us to beat Dhoni & Co. But their team is much stronger than ours. I'd say most likely they'll come out on top.

  • SandipManjrekar on March 12, 2014, 20:44 GMT

WI looks much balanced team of all. Dwayne & Gayle followed by Darren & Samual with Simmons & Sr. Bravo as backup & who will forget Sammy's late heroics. If not then Ramdin is still there. So WI can keep same momentum throughout 20 overs as like much balanced Oz. Bowling side is quite decent. BD pitches do suit more for WI.

SA & OZ are far better in shape. We have seen Oz fire in recent 5 match (originally 7) against us.

NZL would be much different than seen last year in & against BD. Their confidence is high too with series win over IND.

Now about PAK. First game against IND. High pressure cooker game. Next mighty Oz. No chance. Next will be qualifier. whoever among BD, Afghan be but tough for them. Last one against WI. I see something similar to CT2013 & I won't surprise if it coincide.

Hafeez knows all these & probably wanted to cheer up the team otherwise he wouldn't have talked such a way. It's a lot of pressure on PAK & you know what happens to them under pressure.

  • mzm149 on March 12, 2014, 20:43 GMT

Pakistan will easily win against India. The match will not immediately decide who is going to stay or leave the tournament, so it will not be much of a pressure game.

  • gaga001 on March 12, 2014, 20:41 GMT

even india also happy to start a match of world T20 with Pakistan, because beating Pakistan will give India mommentum. All pakistani players as well as australian players play talking games, but india plays on ground, shane watson is saying i m in the best australian side this world cup, hafeez saying happy to play with india but no indian player make these kind of statements before match, they make stronger statements on ground which actually matters. believe it or not India is massive favourite in this world cup, if u happy to start with india u can, but i dont think he will be happy after this match.

  • Diaz54 on March 12, 2014, 20:24 GMT

Haffeez should keep quiet and focus his effort I getting his team me tally right. Very difficult Pakistan to win this, given the strength of West Indies, Australia and even Mew Zealand. Pakistwn lacks fast bowling all rounder which will be telling. For Pakistsn to do,well Afridi will need to find his bowling form and opening batting should be without Sharjeel.

  • PPD123 on March 12, 2014, 20:19 GMT

This World T20 would be very open. On paper names wont count. Teams that perform on the day would prevail. In 20 overs 1 or 2 individuals make the difference, you dont necessarily need a collective effort.

Given the subcontinental conditions, I like the look of WI, SL and Aus. They seem to be the most balanced teams... but like I said, it would be the team that performs on the day, that would go all the way and lift the cup.

  • on March 12, 2014, 20:01 GMT

Hafeez, T20 match between India & Pak, being in a World Cup Tournament, will be a different kettle of fish or rather a different ball game altogether. U can't taste wins just like that and u might have to sweat it out.

Mind u the Asian Cup ODI Indian outfit was an inexperienced one, without having most of their main batsmen in it. But the T20 will present look a new team with a blend of Youth & Experience, raring to go, from the word go.

So we presume that the game with Pak will be a hard fought one going down to the wire and so the result might not be predicted till the last ball is bowled. So pls come with due preparation & not with complacency, should u need to give tough fight to India !

Pak needs to maintain low profile and execute. Amusing to hear such undermining statements from a captain. Such statements only indicate sign off pressure and are letting such statements to relieve. Akram and Imran as captains were gentlemen and never gave such statements and let their skills show results. Only time I recall Akram saying such was in England during India/Pak world cup when Pak had already qualified and said game against India would be a practice match and lost big time against Azharuddin's team. Dhoni would never make such juvenile statements.

I guess your memory is limited to last one year so for your memory rejog - T20 2007 WCup, 2011 ODI Wc and of ya the so called mini world cup Champions trophy 2013...And yes before I forget the Asia cup in 2010. Not a bad record....well atleast instead of just reaching finals and semifinals...India has managed to go all the way and win it. Its no use just appearing an exam..one needs to top it to be remembered.

  • on March 12, 2014, 19:30 GMT

    @rohanblue

Pakistan are a better T20 team than India based on rankings and also in WC they have reached final twice and semis on the other 2 times. In 2007 WC, Pakistan should have easily beaten India twice as they needed only 5 off 3 balls in the final and the group game was actually a tie when Pakistan needed 1 run off 2 balls. The superover was won by India but match is still classed as a TIE. Pak will surely set the record straight on 21st March

  • SandipManjrekar on March 12, 2014, 19:19 GMT

I am not optimistic with SC teams in this W/C though it is going to be played their familiar conditions. Not even my team as being struggled since 2 months. Too much experimenting with batting (which wasn't necessary at that time) & depending heavily on top 3 batsmen made the difference in our strongest point. Shami is struggling with release of ball due to which opponents got ample time to counter him in Vee of point & square leg. Bhuvi has improved in his full length pitching but speed is not sufficient to trouble anybody. Ashwin lost his way totally. Jadeja sometimes better, Mishra may be effective but team mgmt thinks otherwise.

Oz, SA, WI & NZL most likely to move further. Sorry but PAK no chance. SL won Asia cup but this is some higher division. While discussing with Rohit on what went wrong with IND, he replied, "Everything". The whole team was furious with Pak's behavior on that day. Waiting eagerly for opening game.

It seems really tough for PAK in next few weeks.

@Xeal Qoofaure, dude india won 4 T20I against pak, not 3, two in 2007 WC, 1 in 2012 WC and one in 2012 T20 series........

  • vkumar_086 on March 12, 2014, 19:14 GMT

I think pressure will be more on Pakistan as they did not win against India in all world cups...

  • on March 12, 2014, 19:12 GMT

T20 is anyone's game afridi is unfit Pakistan has good chance if they beat both India and Australia..

  • on March 12, 2014, 19:08 GMT

The winner will be the one who keeps his mouth shut and focuses. I've heard Hafeez run his big mouth off before and get stung. Does he think India can't put up a big score? Let's respect our opponent and be humble. No need to ape kohlis style. This man Hafeez is not worthy of captaincy.

  • KrikIndFan on March 12, 2014, 19:06 GMT

The one team that everyone needs to be careful of is WI, they are just so unpredictable in this format. On the other hand Pak's mentality stops at dreaming about beating Ind in a major ICC tournament, may be that's the reason they haven't won any major title in a while. Dream big, win big. Cricinfo, I'm sure this is not too direct, please publish.

  • Venkat_Gowrishankar on March 12, 2014, 19:01 GMT

Its simple aint it, Kholi or Dhoni do not give a pre match intervview for a match that is weeks off. The fact that you are nervours and worried makes you want to talk more about it. Pakistan seem to be more nervous than India , too much pressure , clearly reflects that the game is played with too much personal vendetta in Pakistan .

  • on March 12, 2014, 19:00 GMT

Want pak to win this ofcourse as a pakistani, but will swap this for the world cup in 2015 anytime

  • waqas-ahmed-qasi on March 12, 2014, 18:51 GMT

Pakistan will win against india. It will be a pressure cooker game. Both the team have a big concern over fast bowlers performance ,specially pakistani fast bowlers not delivering cent percent. Indians batsmen except Kohli and Dawan are not in good form. I am expecting a big Taakrah( match) on 21 march.

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:44 GMT

Pakistan is most favourite team in T20 world cup. Afridi is in form thats good signs for Pakistan.

  • seo7seo on March 12, 2014, 18:42 GMT

Unfortunately, the new bowling coach was recommended by Wasim Akram. I don't know why Waqar Younis was not assigned as a coach. Pakistani team has never performed with stat minded "officially trained" coaches.

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:26 GMT

Best of Luck Pakistan! May you bring the trophy home... and make us Proud!

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:22 GMT

Pak players have more time as they are not playing the IPL. So they can win while India loses quickly and the players including the injured ones will turn up for the IPL.

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:20 GMT

Reading comments of my fellow countrymen I m disappointed to read every 1 here is saying that Pakistan is goin with weak bowling well for every ones information Pakistan restricted india to 248 which is best batting sides in the world secondly apart frm talha umar n junaid wer pretty economical its shame tht junaid is not given a new ball as he gets most of his wicket with new ball I m sure hafeez will use junaid well n umar gul important wickets against srilanka and india n lastly we are forgetting tht the tournament is being played on flat tracks every teams bowlers got hammered

  • samincolumbia on March 12, 2014, 18:20 GMT

@flyboy_forever - You forgot the Pakistani defeats by India in all WC T20 matches. The overall record means nothing. You cannot expect anyone to accept the results of matches played in Pakistan and Sharjah with umpires like Shakoor Rana. Just ask Gatting, he will tell you in colorful language what he thinks of Pakistani umpires.

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:14 GMT

Just go Pakistan team and work hard. Whatever the results we aren't with you

  • k2arian on March 12, 2014, 18:13 GMT

@Rahul17_1983: in last one year India lost almost all the matches not only against Pakistan but all the teams they played hahahaha

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:09 GMT

Rahul, you may not be able to click the links people have provided so here is a break down for you. Tests Total 60 Pak 12 India 9 Draw 39

    ODIs Total 131 Pak 72 India 50 N/R 9

    T20Is Total 5 Pak 1 India 3 N/R 1

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:09 GMT

The performance of fast bowlers is a concern for Pakistan, Batting has performed nicely in the Asia Cup. Well Pakistan is seeded 6th so it will be a surprise if Pakistan Qualifies for the semifinal, the only team to do so in past 4 tournaments.

  • on March 12, 2014, 18:09 GMT

wishful thinking mr hafeez, india wl win hands down, and afridi wl be a big flop, in this trnmnt

  • Farooq3 on March 12, 2014, 18:00 GMT

India or no India - it all depends on which Pakistan will turn up on the day of the match! On their day, Pakistan can beat any team in the world and vice versa.

  • WeeBee on March 12, 2014, 17:59 GMT

I really have to admire the confidence of Professor. He knows how to fight in a match with sportsman spirit in a pressure game unlike indian young captain Kohli " who shows punches being captain ". Hafeez is more logical than anyone else in Pakistani Team right now. If i calculate the no of defeats Pakistan faced from india in recent years, then i would also add that they all were close matches. I am very much expecting very good games in T20 WC.

  • on March 12, 2014, 17:51 GMT

best of luck pak team just play good cricket and we r with u, no matter wht the result will be.

  • samincolumbia on March 12, 2014, 17:49 GMT

I guess since it's very rare that Pakistan win against India in international tournaments, they just cannot keep talking about it. Pakistani cricketers and fans seem to be breathing India 24x7 to keep themselves alive.

  • on March 12, 2014, 17:49 GMT

if Pakistan wins against India; will win WC as well an vice versa. 95% chance are that Pakistan will lose. Our pace bowlers are unfit especially Irfan.

@rahul... we are happy with overall fact :P

  • on March 12, 2014, 17:44 GMT

I don't think a Pakistani suppoter should expect too much from team cuz according to me we have very good other sides(Sri Lanka, Australia and India) in this tournament. I think the way West Indian team is playing is a very clear sign that their embittions are to hold this trophy again.

  • on March 12, 2014, 17:43 GMT

all the best to team Pakistan we are with you .

  • on March 12, 2014, 17:43 GMT

this will be 1st major tournament where paksitan will go in with better batting than bowling. in past, it was other way around.

the big game will get out of the way early. what pakistan need is the mental strength. they are inconsistent side. never won 4-5 games in any tournament. few tough games and then a really poor 1 follows. looks like they run out of gas. this has been the case in past. this wct20 is a tough competition as groups are tough. they have to be at their best for all games.

Fast bowling is a serious concern. In asia cup they were very poor and wc squad has only 1 bowling change and that is sohail tanvir. I am not sure on how much hard work M Akram is doing as we have seen no improvement in new guys like Anwar, bhatti and talha.

spinners will be effective against non asian teams but fast bowlers are definitely required to do more work in games against asian teams.

    Good luck.

  • AH_USA on March 12, 2014, 17:40 GMT

Frankly speaking, I have failed to understand why Mohammad Akram was chosen as the bowling coach. Aaqib Javed would have been a better coach. Umar Gul gets frustrated very quickly if he gets a hammering in the early overs, be it an ODI or a T20 game.

  • MTA82 on March 12, 2014, 17:38 GMT

    GOOD LUCK PAKISTAN TEAM..

Your nation needs your performance. You can provide happy and joyous moments to your nation.

  • Rahul17_1983 on March 12, 2014, 17:34 GMT

In recent Past (10 yrs) pakistan has lost more matches than India in one to one.And lost almost all pressure matches barring few..
